Hassan set to lose caps record
Claudio Suarez
Suarez: Should break record on 1 June
Mexico captain Claudio Suarez is set to become the world's most capped footballer by overtaking Egypt striker Hossam Hassan.

Suarez has played 156 times for his country, putting him one game behind Hassan.

He should draw level with Hassan in Mexico's first match of the Confederations Cup against Australia in Suwon, South Korea, on May.

Suarez would then go ahead of the Egyptian in Mexico's second match, against hosts South Korea in Ulsan on 1 June.

Mexico are the Confederations Cup defending champions.

A Fifa spokesman said: "Like Hassan he would presented with an armband by Fifa that marks the national team player who holds the record in international appearances and who is still active."

Suarez is a 32-year-old central defender who plays his club football for Tigres in Mexico.

Hassan officially became the world's most capped player when he played his 151st international match in January, beating the record of Germany's Lothar Matthäus.
