By Tom Rostance
2221: Goodnight from me then, and join us back tomorrow for a mega day of FA Cup action. Phil Dawkes is in the driving seat on what promises to be a bery, very busy one. See you there.
FULL-TIME Liverpool 5-1 Oldham Marc Higginson reports: "The 5-1 scoreline was harsh on Oldham - they were a credit to lower league football tonight. But Liverpool fans have plenty to be thankful for - especially a return to goalscoring form for Andy Carroll."
2219: So a busy day tomorrow, but here's what our reporter made of tonight's game at Anfield...
2216: Here's some of that statement issued by Manchester United and Wayne Rooney silencing talk of a transfer for the England man: "We have not seen the detail [of the story] but can assure all United fans that the manager and the club are committed to Wayne Rooney and Wayne is committed to the manager and the club. The player and the manager have always had, and retain, the utmost respect for each other and look forward to working together in the coming seasons."
2212: So what has everyone got planned for tomorrow afternoon? Whatever it is - get it shelved. You're going nowhere (unless it's to a match). There are 26 FA Cup third round ties tomorrow. 26. Some highlights include Birmingham v Wolves, Gillingham v Stoke, Everton v Tamworth, Macclesfield v Bolton and Nottingham Forest v Leicester. If you can't feel the magic in that lot, you're a lost cause.
2209: In what may be a record, Manchester United and Wayne Rooney have issued a statement in which they have described a newspaper report that the England striker is about to leave the club as "nonsense". That was very fast work at Old Trafford.
2207: Frank Lampard to leave Chelsea, Wayne Rooney to leave Manchester United? This month's transfer rumours have certainly started in a big way. It's hard to imagine him leaving Old Trafford before the end of the season, but stranger things have happened. Where would he go?
From Richard on text: "Great performance from the lads tonight and if we could have kept the lead til half time, who knows what would have happened. Congrats Latics - proud of you."
2157: Some news from tomorrow's newspapers to bring you here, as the Independent reckon that Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to let Wayne Rooney leave Manchester United due to a breakdown in their relationship. That would be massive.
2156: All over then, and Liverpool are the first team into the hat for round four of the FA Cup. Cracking finish from Stewart Downing there which put an extra coat of gloss on the scoreline.
2156: FULL-TIME Liverpool 5-1 Oldham
Liverpool goal: A first Liverpool goal for Stewart Downing. He is in the right place to collect a rebound after Jon Flanagan hit a shot from range.
2154: GOALFLASH Liverpool 5-1 Oldham (Stewart Downing)
2152: The 4-1 scoreline flatters Liverpool somewhat, Oldham deserve a lot of credit for their approach. Ooh and here's the other side of Andy Carroll as he misses a sitter. Stewart Downing crosses for him unmarked in front of goal and it's over the top.
Liverpool goal: Great moment for the big man as Andy Carroll scores his first goal at Anfield this season. It's all instinctive as well as he swivels onto a loose ball 20 yards out and thrashes a left-footed effort into the bottom corner. Tremendous strike.
2148: GOALFLASH Liverpool 4-1 Oldham (Andy Carroll)
2146: Into the last five minutes at Anfield, and Martin Kelly chances his arm from long-range but is way off target. Here comes Andy Carroll for Liverpool, on for Dirk Kuyt.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Accrington have completed that 2-0 win at Burton, and here's some words from the prolific Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes, who has now scored 12 goals in his last five games. He said: "I am just trying to do my best and play as well as I can in each game. Scouts could be watching anyone, I do not take any notice of them."
2140: Oldham midfielder Tom Adeyemi takes a throw-in and then turns to confront a spectator in the front few rows at Anfield. He is seriously unhappy here with something that was said to him and looks close to tears. The game is stopped for a few minutes and Steven Gerrard has a word with Adeyemi. Play is back under way now but we may hear more about that one.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: The frankly underwhelming Jordan Rhodes ends the night with just five goals as Huddersfield win 6-0 at Wycombe. That win lifts the Terriers up to third in the League One table. In League Two, Accrington are still 2-0 up at Burton in stoppage time.
Mike Kinley on Twitter:
"Despite all the multi million pound signings LFC have made over the last 12 months Bellamy on a free is the finest."
2135: Stewart Downing is on for Liverpool now, as this game is winding down. Oldham were superb for the opening half hour but once Liverpool got ahead they have looked comfortable. Still no sign of Andy Carroll though.
2133: Robbie Simpson comes off for Oldham and gets a great reception after his earlier wondergoal. No place for Roberto Mancini's son just yet though, as Matt Smith comes on.
2130: Fabio Aurelio comes off on his first game back from injury, as Kenny Dalglish hands Jon Flanagan 20 minutes or so. Looking comfortable for the Premier League side now.
Liverpool goal: That, surely, is that. Quality again from Craig Bellamy as he skins his man down the right to pull the ball back, Steven Gerrard is waiting to dispatch the ball but he is beaten to the punch by Jonjo Shelvey, who sweeps home from 10 yards.
2127: GOALFLASH Liverpool 3-1 Oldham (Jonjo Shelvey)
2121: Oldham keep coming - and that's another decent chance. Substitute Josh Parker picks out Tom Adeyemi inside the area but the midfielder gets under the ball and skies it into the crowd. A reminder for Kenny Dalglish and his men that they are not in the fourth round yet.
2120: Into the last half hour at Anfield, and Liverpool are well on top of Oldham now. But the League One side only need a goal. I wonder if Andrea Mancini will get a run out?
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "The pace of Bellamy is bordering on unplayable and he is whipping in some fantastic crosses too."
2117: Close for Liverpool! Martin Kelly dives in to plant a header goalward from a corner, but Alex Cisak manages to turn it around. Great save from the Oldham man - and that's why goalkeeping legend Dean Bouzanis is only on the bench.
Anonymous on text: "An anagram of Dean Bouzanis - IS DUE BONANZA! We'll see!"
2114: Jonjo Shelvey feeds Craig Bellamy, who puts in his umpteenth fine cross of the night but Maxi Rodriguez fails to latch onto it. Bellamy is having another fine evening for Liverpool.
JORDAN RHODES LATEST: Huddersfield go 6-0 up at Wycombe as that man Jordan Rhodes gets on the end of a Danny Ward cross to net his fifth of the night. Still 20 minutes left there as well!
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Nightmare for Burton defender Ryan Austin as he heads into his own goal to put Accrington 2-0 up.
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "It looks like the second half will be like the first. We have a chance, and you have a chance. It's end to end again."
2107: Lightning-quick counter attack from Liverpool as Craig Bellamy almost feeds in Dirk Kuyt but Liverpool fan Zander Diamond makes a great tackle. It's 5-0 to Huddersfield by the way, if you refresh your screens my earlier update will appear. A few technical gremlins in the system here.
2106: Again Oldham start brightly at Anfield, as they win a corner straight from kick-off. An equaliser now would make life interesting - and Jean-Yves M'voto stabs it wide.
2105: The players are back out at Anfield - and the second half is up and running.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Lee Clark should bring Jordan Rhodes off now before the scouts get really excited. Just the four for Rhodes tonight now as he taps in after Danny Ward's shot is parried out. Huddersfield 5-0 up at Wycombe inside an hour. Accrington still lead at Burton.
David Morris on Twitter:
"There's no doubting Jordan Rhodes is a talented footballer but there's a huge difference between League One and Premier League."
2056: Go on Paul Dickov, put Dean Bouzanis on for the next 45 minutes. We all want to see him. Jordan Rhodes - by the way - has netted 10 goals for Huddersfield in his last four-and-a-half games. Truly ridiculous.
Elwyn from Bangor on text: "Dean Bouzanis to come on in the second half and save a penalty in front of the Kop and win Man of the Match! You read it here first, folks!"
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Jordan Rhodes is getting more expensive by the minute at Wycombe. He's bagged another one to bring up his hat-trick and put Huddersfield 4-0 up. He runs in behind the defence, sees Nikki Bull stop his first effort but is on hand to slot in the loose ball.
Liverpool 2-1 Oldham Marc Higginson's HT snapshot: "What a great start to FA Cup third round weekend - this is a cracking game. Oldham looked to be on the verge of springing one of the great shocks but Liverpool turned it up a notch when they had to."
2049: HALF-TIME Liverpool 2-1 Oldham
Liverpool goal: Oldham concede a soft penalty when Maxi Rodriguez is pushed as he tries to get onto a cross from Steven Gerrard. Gerrard steps up off a short run-up and bullets the ball into the top corner.
2046: GOALFLASH Liverpool 2-1 Oldham (Steven Gerrard)
Penalty to Liverpool
2044: Steven Gerrard produces a gem of a first-time pass which releases Craig Bellamy - who is just offside. Gerrard looking ominously influential as the half grows on.
2043: Luis Suarez may be out of action, but the Uruguayan is at Anfield tonight. He's in the stands watching this one. Nice touch.
2041: Oldham keeper Alex Cisak makes a hash of clearing a backpass, it hits the back of Maxi Rodriguez, and Craig Bellamy is onto it but his header is weak and Cisak makes the save.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: It's half-time at our two league games, Huddersfield 3-0 up and cruising at Wycombe, and Accrington 1-0 up at Burton.
2036: Liverpool come close to taking the lead in what has been a cracking game so far. Maxi Rodriguez sends in a shot at the back post, Alex Cisak makes a fine block in the Oldham goal, and Jonjo Shelvey slips as he is about to collect the rebound. Can Oldham hang on here?
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "That will go down in the annals as one of the great FA Cup goals from Robbie Simpson. But Liverpool went up a gear as soon as Oldham scored. They got the ball down and passed it, and scored. They proved they have the extra gear when it is needed."
2034: Harsh on Oldham that. Robbie Simpson belts one in at the Kop end, sprints the whole length of the pitch to celebrate with his own fans, and is barely back in play when Liverpool level.
Liverpool goal: Liverpool rise from their slumber to level straight away, and the goal has more than a touch of fortune about it. Jonjo Shelvey shoots, the ball is heading straight to Oldham keeper Alex Cisak but strikes Craig Bellamy in the chest to deflect into the corner.
2032: GOALFLASH Liverpool 1-1 Oldham (Craig Bellamy)
Oldham goal: Wow! What a goal! Robbie Simpson runs onto a bouncing ball a full 30 yards from goal, takes aim and crunches a dipping half-volley right into the top corner. Unstoppable.
2030: GOALFLASH Liverpool 0-1 Oldham (Robbie Simpson)
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "If you change the team about (as Liverpool have done), it can have an impact. But they play with each other in training and it will come together for them. They just can't wait to go a goal behind before it happens."
2028: Dirk Kuyt is having a rare night up front - and so far, so bad. Craig Bellamy whips in a great free-kick, Kuyt loses his marker but can only head the ball over the top. After that last good Oldham chance, Liverpool have got their foot on the ball a bit more.
2024: Oldham come close again! Tom Adeyemi gets into the area but fizzes a low shot right across the face of goal. The 6,000 away fans are rightly in full voice.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Kevin McIntyre has smashed in a free-kick to put Accrington 1-0 up at Burton.
2022: There's the first bit of Steven Gerrard magic though, letting the ball run through his legs on the edge of the box cleverly, but Dirk Kuyt doesn't read it and Oldham get the ball away. Better.
2019: Steven Gerrard has not taken charge of this midfield battle yet, and it's still Oldham looking dangerous. In League One, Huddersfield look set for a cricket score at Wycombe. It's still 3-0 but wave after wave of attack from the Terriers.
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "Liverpool's defence is being breached far too easily at the moment. It could be 3-0 to Oldham already."
2015: Another corner for Oldham, and a free header for Tom Adeyemi! But the midfielder heads over the top. It could be 3-0 to Oldham here, quite easily. Liverpool on the rack...
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Pace? Check. Power? Check. Composure? Check. Jordan Rhodes is on fire as he puts Huddersfield 3-0 up after 25 minutes at Wycombe. He surges past a defender to run in on goal before finishing from a tight angle. Joe Jordan and Clive Allen are in the crowd - a scouting mission from Spurs?
2011: Great play from Shefki Kuqi as he muscles his way through for Oldham. Kuqi rounds Sebastian Coates and bursts past Jamie Carragher but can only drag his shot into the side-netting. The League One side have come to Anfield with a bang so far.
Anonymous on text: "I can confirm that in football manager 2008 Dean Bouzanis became one of the best goalkeepers in the world by about january 2012. Oh..."
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "It's a cup game already, both teams are going for it. It's end to end. Oldham are lively, and don't look like they are lacking in confidence."
2006: Oldham have made a bright start, as the Latics force another corner with Robbie Simpson causing trouble. But there go Liverpool again, the livewire Craig Bellamy putting in a cross which is well dealt with. A proper cup tie here.
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: There he is, the prolific Jordan Rhodes, lurking in the six-yard box to volley in a Jack Hunt cross to put Huddersfield 2-0 up at Wycombe. Lethal.
2004: First chance at Anfield - and it falls for Oldham! Luca Scapuzzi takes a fresh air shot and the ball is cleared away for a corner. Craig Bellamy breaks down the other end but his ball in is well defended.
2002: We have kicked off at Anfield.
Pat Nevin at Anfield on BBC Radio 5 live: "It would be nice for Liverpool to see their big players do well. All eyes will be on Steven Gerrard, maybe he is the type of player that Andy Carroll needs to play with."
1959: It's a full house at Anfield, where we are having a minute's applause for former Reds defender Gary Ablett. The last team from the third tier to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup? Bolton Wanderers...
Giles Harwood on Twitter:
"Watch out for the Shefki Kuqi monster on the bench for Oldam. Hoping to get a dose of the swallow dive tonight."
FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST: Who needs Jordan Rhodes? Huddersfield lead at Wycombe as midfielder Oscar Gobern heads in a Gary Roberts corner. Too easy. We are goalless at Burton.
1953: Just how good must Dean Bouzanis have been at his age? A bizarre, but brilliant statement from Rafa Benitez. Just over five minutes to go until kick-off at Anfield.
Anonymous on text: "Random fact. Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, who was once described as 'the best goalkeeper in the world for his age' by Rafa Benitez, is on the bench for Oldham tonight."
1946: We are under way at Wycombe and at Burton in tonight's Football League games. Keep an eye out for Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes, he's hot property at the moment, a one-man goal machine. The new Jon Stead, if you will.
1943: Andrea Mancini could be an interesting substitute later on for Oldham. If he turns out to be a fifth of the player his old man was, he'll be decent. As a lot of you are pointing out, this is a strong team from Liverpool. Mind you, Kenny Dalglish would love to win another trophy.
LIVERPOOL v OLDHAM (2000 BST) Marc Higginson reports: "Is the answer to all of Liverpool's problems Steven Gerrard? Some may think so, and he makes a welcome return to the starting line-up against Oldham. The Reds have rotated their squad a little, meaning a place in the line-up for promising youngster Jonjo Shelvey. Oldham will be pinning hope on Manchester City striker Luca Scapuzzi, while Roberto Mancini's son Andrea Mancini gets a place on the bench. "
1940: Oldham aren't in great form in the league at the minute, with one win in the last six, but boss Paul Dickov's biggest problem may be stopping his players from being overawed. After all, centre-half Zander Diamond was at Anfield in the summer - for a stadium tour. He said: "It has been well documented that the last time I walked out of the tunnel at Anfield was on a ground tour. I cannot imagine what it will be like on Friday when we go out to 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and then I look to my left and see over 6000 Latics fans." That there is what the FA Cup is all about ladies and gentleman. A man up against his heroes, on a level playing field.
LIVERPOOL v OLDHAM (2000 BST) Marc Higginson reports: "Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish is using Manchester City's 3-0 defeat of his side as a lesson to his misfiring strikers. The root of the Reds' trouble seems to lie with a lack of goals - and City showed the way to do it on Tuesday. "I think it was a good learning opportunity for us," said the Scot. "It only reflects the importance of being clinical - and City were clinical. If we want to get to where everyone wants to take the club then we have to be clinical."
Rhys on text: "It all depends on who gets the first goal, if Liverpool start off shaky Oldham could grab a shock win, but can't really see it happening."
1934: Of course, the Latics were twice FA Cup semi-finallists in the 1990s. In 1994 they were denied by a Mark Hughes special at Wembley - you know the one. Last minute of extra-time, Brian McClair flicks it over the top, Hughes on the stretch smashes it into the corner - while in 1990 that pesky United side did them again. In a smooth, and entirely relevant link, here's what Oldham fan
Graham Lambert, guitarist of the Inspiral Carpets,
thought of that defeat. Time to dig out your copy of 'Life.'
LIVERPOOL v OLDHAM (2000 BST) Marc Higginson reports: "Oldham manager Paul Dickov has played international football for Scotland and in the Premier League with Manchester City, but he will still get some butterflies when he comes up against boyhood hero Kenny Dalglish tonight: "For any youngster growing up in Scotland of my age, Kenny was a big hero," he said. "I met him when I was a young kid at Arsenal. I was only 16 years old and shook his hand and couldn't talk to him. I was that in awe."
Ned Thomas on Twitter:
"Surprising Liverpool team. I thought they would have seen this as a great opportunity for Andy Carroll to get confidence."
1931: So what are Oldham's chances tonight? Well it's only four years since an Oldham side that included Mark Crossley and Lee Hughes beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park in the third round. Great scenes. However, they went on to lose at home to Huddersfield in the next round. Always the way...
LIVERPOOL v OLDHAM (2000 BST) Marc Higginson reports: "The last time these two sides met, in 1994, it was a Premier League fixture. Liverpool have since gone on to win the Champions League and every other cup competition going, while Oldham have struggled to re-establish themselves since those halcyon days under Joe Royle. The last six meetings between the teams have generated 20 goals - and Oldham will be looking for the next Ian Olney, whose brace helped the Latics to a 3-2 victory over the Reds in May 1993."
1927: We've also got two Football League fixtures to keep you across this evening, as Wycombe host Huddersfield in Oldham's League One, and Burton take on Accrington in League Two.
Anonymous on text, via 81111: "Unbelievably for a typical pessimistic Latics fan, I actually fancy wee Jock's blue army to get a result against the Scousers tonight. C'mon lads, do it for the underdogs! Oohrogerpalmer!"
1923: So are we going to start this season's FA Cup with a bang? Can Oldham pull it off? Let me know by Tweeting the commentary via the hashtag
or text in via 81111 (UK).
1921: Of course, Liverpool's hero on that day - as on so many days - was Steven Gerrard. His performance to drag Rafael Benitez's men back into that 2006 final with West Ham was extraordinary. Gerrard is back from injury, and he starts tonight.
1917: The 131st FA Cup competition is well underway already, but tonight sees the first of the big boys to enter the fray. Oldham are at Anfield for the first of this weekend's 32 cup ties - and Liverpool haven't won the trophy since 2006.
BREAKING TEAM NEWS: Steven Gerrard starts for Liverpool, as does Jamie Carragher, Sebastian Coates and Fabio Aurelio.
1915: Giant killings. Improbable goals. Embarrassing upsets. 'Notable scalps.' The personification of a metal trophy and then giving it 'magical' properties. Yep, it's only FA Cup third round time. Don your sheepskin coat and join me for Liverpool v Oldham...
