0103: Right then. The clock has struck one, which means it is two hours since the transfer window shut, and it seems a good time to wrap our deadline coverage up. Thanks for keeping me company during an exciting day that might have lacked truly mind-blowing deals but had enough twists and turns to keep us going into the early hours. I've been Chris Bevan and you lot have been magnificent. Thanks too to Sam Lyon for kicking this whole thing off about 17 hours ago. Medals all round as far as I'm concerned, and for the rest of the BBC journalists who contributed to our text commentary too. I'm off to bed, but I'll see you again on Friday for Bulgaria versus England, and more. Cheerio for now.

toongaz on Twitter: "Re 0051. Ahhhh that explains it, Beattie is Newcastle's dream number nine. He's free. "

0058: Stoke City boss Tony Pulis on his deadline day capture of Cameron Jerome, Wilson Palacios and now Peter Crouch: "There has been a real buzz of excitement around the city about where this Club is going since we reached the FA Cup Final and then started our Europa League adventure. These signings certainly add to that great sense of anticipation."

Yey! It's the one we were all waiting for. Stoke City have confirmed they have broken their transfer record to sign Tottenham striker Peter Crouch for £10m, potentially rising to £12m. What took them so long?

briz_in_japan on Twitter: "Re 0042. es, Everton have no time to spend the cash, but it isn't there to spend! We've already been told it's going to the bank!"

0051: Here's an interesting one, especially if you are fan of a Premier League club in need of a striker. James Beattie has been released by Rangers, meaning he is now a free agent who can join anyone regardless of the fact the deadline has passed. Anyone interested?

0048: Congratulations if you are still awake and are still with me. It is almost two hours since the transfer window shut and still no official confirmation that Peter Crouch has joined Stoke. Is he hiding somewhere at the Britannia Stadium? I'm tempted to go there and try and find him myself...

Chelsea fan ProcterCFC on Twitter: "I dont think Meireles will be good enough to start for us, but I hope he proves me wrong."

Unhappy Spurs fan Zapsta on Twitter: "Big money in from the sales of Palacios, Crouch, Hutton, yet, for the second year in a row, very little spent. Disappointed."

Speaking of which, I don't think I actually announced this as a done deal. Striker Denis Stracqualursi (see below), 23, has joined Everton on a season-long loan Argentinian side Tigres.

0042: Hmmm, seems some of you Everton fans were happy with deadline day dealings. Yes, Mikel Arteta is injury prone and £10m is not a bad price but you had no time to spend the money on a replacement. I guess we will have to wait and see how Denis Stracqualursi and Royston Drenthe do in the Premier League too...

homsey73 on Twitter: "Re 0012. Yakubu and Arteta have been trading on past glories since their injuries - our loan signings may be an improvement."

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "Hearing that when Crouch arrived here tonight the first thing he had was a curry in the Stoke City canteen."

From Daniel, a Magpies fan in Newcastle, via text: "How has it taken us eight months to NOT find a replacement for Carroll, but Arsenal, Chelsea and Stoke can sign people within hours. Oh that's it - they have people at the top who want success not just a profit!"

delzer on Twitter: "Arteta inconsistent and injury prone last 2 seasons. would have been good business for Everton if a replacement signed."

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Premier League clubs now have until 5pm on Friday to register their 25 man squads with the Premier League."

Another Everton departure we were waiting for confirmation on. Striker Jermaine Beckford has joined big-spending Championship side Leicester for a fee which could rise to £4m.

JohannesLanger on Twitter: "Honestly a bad day for both north east Premier League clubs... the Geordies landing no-one and us Mackems getting Bendtner."

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "Outside Stoke's training ground and the chief exec Tony Scholes has just told us Peter Crouch will be out in 15 minutes... but I'm about to have a word with him now."

0025: I should add Newcastle to the list of deadline-day losers for their failure to sign a striker, despite having a bid accepted for Bryan Ruiz.

JakeHaley21 on Twitter: "Some good signings for Newcastle. Looks like were going to have a good season."

Hmmm. I suspect Jake is being sarcastic here... or is he?

0022: STILL no confirmation from Stoke that they have signed Peter Crouch from Tottenham. Crouch was at the Britannia a few hours ago so don't think that deal is in danger, unless they couldn't find him a pen.

They haven't stopped coming in yet, you know. Swansea have signed French defender Darnel Situ from Lens, subject to Premier League clearance. The 19-year-old has penned a two-year deal.

QPR's former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter: "Nice to see Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias come through with their promise to reinvest Andy Carroll money, £59m net profit from transfers in last 5 seasons... ambition???"

0012: So, safe to say Everton have had the worst transfer deadline day out of every top-flight club, and Tottenham also had a surprisingly disappointing time, despite getting Scott Parker of course. Bolton, Stoke, QPR, Aston Villa and Arsenal, yes, Arsenal have had some of the best. I'll add Fulham to that list after learning about Bryan Ruiz. Liverpool did well to get Craig Bellamy but they will miss Raul Meireles. Chelsea left it very late but emerge with one of the deals of the day there.

mandalinar on Twitter: "Glad thats over and Sunderland got a striker in the end. We've brought in a fair few players... Lets hope our performance improves."

Here's another move that was off earlier, but went through in the end. Possibly because Neil Warnock's move for Sebastien Bassong from Spurs fell through. Anyway, QPR have completed the signing of Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand.

0004: I was going to wrap this text commentary up at midnight but we are still waiting on so many deals I am going to keep things going for a little while longer. Will you keep me company? Thanks, I knew you would... I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

I wrote this one off. I was wrong. Fulham have signed FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz. That comes after late interest from Newcastle that saw the Magpies have a £12m bid accepted but fail to agree personal terms with the Costa Rican.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Told the 40m package Tottenham rejected from Chelsea for Luka Modric was £30m plus Alex."

Here's a move that owes everything to Alan Tate's misfortune in a golf buggy a few days ago. Swansea have re-signed their former left-back Federico Bessone from Leeds on a two-year deal deal

As midnight approaches, news of deals is still coming through. Hull have signed Leicester striker Martyn Waghorn on loan until January.

Well, Fulham have signed a striker, just not the one we though they would. The Cottagers have confirmed the free transfer signing of former Porto striker Orlando Sa on a three-year deal.

have confirmed their signing of Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe on a season-long loan. Not sure whether that will cheer up Toffees fans too much tonight?

2344: So, we know about Stuart Fleetwood but STILL no confirmation from Stoke about Peter Crouch, and I have no idea whether Bryan Ruiz joined Fulham in the end. That last one went awfully quiet in the last few hours so I am tempted to write it off. We already know Newcastle failed to sign him.

have announced their second signing of the night, Hereford striker Stuart Fleetwood arriving for an undisclosed fee.

have signed Hull City striker Jay Simpson on loan until January. The 22-year-old had a loan spell at the New Den in 2007/08.

2342: I think I forgot to tell you this in all the excitement earlier: New Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has signed a four-year deal at the Emirates.

BradleyHarrold on Twitter: "Well done Arsene Wenger leaves it to last minute but Mikel Arteta will replace Cesc and Yossi Benayoun good signing so happy."

nmistry95 on Twitter: "People are underestimating just how solid a signing Craig Bellamy is! top work there from King Kenny!"

taz_lfc on Twitter: "Devastated that Raul Meireles left LFC! Was instrumental in midfield last year and is a great loss to the team."

2338: Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish on his new signings: "Alan Hutton is an athletic full-back who has a lot of experience playing at a high level. Jermaine Jenas is a dynamic midfield player and I feel he will add quality to the squad."

Some late business in Scotland to update you on: Out-of-favour Celtic centre-half Jos Hooiveld has joined Southampton on loan, while Rangers have farmed out fringe midfielders John Fleck and Kyle Hutton to Sheffield United to gain regular first-team football. Aberdeen striker Michael Paton has joined Stockport County on loan in search of regular starts.

No news (yet) on Peter Crouch, but Stoke have confirmed the arrival of one striker. Cameron Jerome has signed a four-year deal after joining from Birmingham for an undisclosed fee. Potters boss Tony Pulis will definitely be hoping Jerome can continue the form he has shown when he has visited the Britannia Stadium with the Blues, because he has netted six times in his four appearances there.

Blackburn snap up highly-rated teenage striker Jordan Slew. The 18-year-old frontman will cost Rovers an initial £1m.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Everton have signed Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi on season-long loan and Drenthe confirmation expected soon."

zippyatlarge on Twitter: "A disappointing day for Spurs. loads out and no defensive reinforcements in. Cahill should have been priority signing. No top 5 finish."

j__kent on Twitter: "Happy with Stoke's deals today. Good work by Tony Pulis. Hope the Crouch deal is confirmed soon so I can go to bed."

A double deal by Aston Villa to tell you about. They captured Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas on a season-long loan and have also brought in his Spurs team-mate Alan Hutton in a permanent move, with the Scot signing until 2015.

have been busy tonight. They have also signed West Brom defender Pablo Ibanez for an undisclosed fee.

So, Sunderland keep Asamoah Gyan (or, as far as we know, they do) and bolster their attacking options by signing Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

It was on , and then off. But finally on again. Arsenal have completed the signing of Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta for a fee in the region of £10m.

2313: The window has closed and boy did a few teams leave it late. Delighted with your team's last-gasp capture? Or distraught at seeing your best player leave. Do let me know, won't you? I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

2312: DONE DEAL Yep, here is one of the day's BIG, last-ditch deals. Chelsea have confirmed that 28-year-old Portugal international Raul Meireles has joined the club from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The fee is believed to be in the region of £12m.

2310: Confirmed: Chelsea have signed Raul Meireles. And Arsenal have signed Mikel Arteta and let Nicklas Bendtner join Sunderland on loan. Phew.

2309: DONE DEAL:
complete some last-minute business with the signing of midfielder Wade Elliott from Championship rivals Burnley.

have signed Trinidad & Tobago international forward Collin Samuel subject to international clearance. The 30-year-old was released by St Johnstone in May.

MK Dons
have beaten the deadline to sign Norwich City midfielder Anthony McNamee on a free transfer.

2305: I'll bring you news of Mikel Arteta, Raul Meireles and all the rest, when I get it. Meireles is the deal that intrigues me a the moment. There are reports Chelsea made a £15m for him tonight.

Ex-Gunners defender Martin Keown on Football Focus Special: "I think Arsenal's signings are a step in the right direction, but the club have done a lot of business in the period of a few days. Signings such as Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun will help Arsenal improve but what will buy the manager time is a few good results. Time will tell if Arsene Wenger has made the right signings."

2301: But the transfer news will not stop for a good while yet. Time to find out who made it before the deadline, and who missed out...

Breaking news

In the pipeline
Something had to already be in place if Raul Meireles is going to join join Chelsea in the next 120 seconds. I suspect we won't find out until after the deadline has passed...

2256: Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on leaving Manchester City and returning to west London with QPR: "I'm very excited to be here. It's a big club. I just want to get back playing football. I'd like to thank the managers of Bolton, Wigan and Stoke for showing an interest. In the end it was an easy decision to make. I'm looking to seeing my old mate Joey Barton, it should be a good laugh. The City fans have supported me for 10 years of my life. Neil Warnock has just told me to be energetic and create goals."

2255: Still no news on Peter Crouch. Or Cameron Jerome. I think we can assume Stoke have got their men, though.

Another signing in the bag for Arsene Wenger, as the Gunners snap up Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Just Mikel Arteta to go now...

BBC Sport
Robbie Savage on Football Focus Special on Craig Bellamy re-joining Liverpool: "He will be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. Two years ago he was arguably the best player in the Premier League. I think that he will be an impact player, coming off the bench, playing on the right and the left."

2250: TEN MINUTES to go until the transfer window shuts. Still an awful lot of business to be wrapped up.

2249: BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter's Ian Dennis has confirmed that Blackburn are trying to sign Sheffield United striker Jordan Slew.

Woah, the deals are starting to drop now. Liverpool have announced on their website that Wales international Craig Bellamy has re-signed for the club. The former Manchester City striker will wear the number 39 shirt.

From Ian in Runcorn, via text: "If Meireles wants out let him go, don't need bad energy in the dressing room, if Chelsea want him bad enough twist their arm for Sturridge in return I say."

2245: And Raul Meireles too, of course. Somebody get him a helicopter.

2244: OK, just 16 minutes left until the transfer window shuts. We await news of Mikel Arteta, Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch, amongst others.

2242: News from Scotland, and it's got a hint of mystery about it. Rangers have rejected a late £9m offer for striker Nikica Jelavic after receiving a call from an agent who refused to say what club he was representing. It could have been anyone but let's rule Accrington Stanley out for starters.

Actually a Dann deal this one: Scott Dann in fact. The defender has signed a four-year deal with Blackburn after joining from Birmingham for an undisclosed fee.

Shaun Wright-Phillips completes his move move from Man City to QPR. Seb Bassong may have fallen through but Neil Warnock gets his man this time.

2235: So, Raul Meireles clearly wants that move to Chelsea. They have got 25 minutes to make his wish come true.

Yossi Benayoun on Twitter: "I sign with arsenal, very happy and excited about it, but now my head is only in the game against Greece on Friday, thanks for the support."

Breaking news
have confirmed that midfielder Raul Meireles has submitted a written transfer request. He's left it late, hasn't he?

Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder on Twitter: "Thanks for all the support, from all over the world!! I will stay with Inter next season. Have a good night everyone. I respect all the Man Utd fans, who supported me the whole transfer window! I'm a winner and I will make you Interisti proud this season!!!!"

2229: Just over half-an hour of the transfer window left and Dan Walker is back with us with another another Football Focus Special on the BBC News Channel and Red Button. You can watch it right here too. Just give this page a manual refresh and it will appear at the top.

The Insider
Bolton captain Kevin Davies tells BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan what he has been up to on transfer deadline day: "It's good to get away from the deadline day madness, we've been given some time off so I'm on holiday with my family in Spain. The rumours make me laugh, I heard one on the radio earlier that I was spotted at Arsenal!"

russhyde on Twitter: "I'm on the edge here waiting for Arteta or Benayoun deals to go through! Hurry hurry Wenger and Gazidis!"

CurtisDoyle on Twitter: "Stoke have done some seriously good business this transfer window "

2221: And, after a succession of deals that are happening, here is one that isn't. After a summer of speculation (and several failed bids from big-spending Leicester City) Bristol City have confirmed that Nicky Maynard will not be leaving the club today.

Southend United
have signed Swindon Town midfielder Michael Timlin on loan until January.

have signed former Newcastle striker Shefki Kuqi until the end of the season. Another frontman the Magpies won't be signing tonight. Probably for the best on this occasion, though.

Rumour Mill
Arsenal are not the only ones leaving it late. Reports are coming in from Ewood Park that Blackburn are trying to make last-ditch move for Sheffield United striker Jordan Slew.

have signed sign 22-year-old defender Mitchell Nelson on loan from Bournemouth until October. The Blue Square Bet Premier club have filed the paperwork to the FA and are just awaiting confirmation before the 2300 BST deadline.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam on Twitter: "Bellemy could be a big signing for LFC."

*Note to Charlie Adam. Learn how to spell Craig Bellamy's name.

have announced the capture of midfielder Wilson Palacios from Tottenham, on a four-year deal and for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £6m. Expect Peter Crouch to wrap up his own move from White Hart Lane to the Britannia Stadium in the next few minutes.

2208: Bolton manager Owen Coyle has told BBC Sport's Paul Plunkett he is very happy with how the transfer window has panned out, after signing David Ngog and Gael Kakuta, while managing to keep Gary Cahill despite considerable interest from elsewhere. Not surprised he is happy about that - Cahill looked almost certain to go at one stage.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher Brighton will not be signing former Valencia winger Vicente before the transfer window closes. But I understand that talks will continue on Thursday and with the 30-year-old being a free agent, he would still be able to sign for the high-flying Seagulls.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Alan Pardew must be tearing his hair out. Lost out on Bryan Ruiz and no incomings now expected at Newcastle."

2206: Any of you wondering what is happening with Bryan Ruiz? BBC Sport's Saj Chowdhury reports that Newcastle had a £12m bid for the FC Twente striker accepted, but the move broke down over the Costa Rican's personal terms. The Magpies will not be doing any more transfer business in this window... so, over to you Fulham.

2202: So inside one hour left and lots of potential transfers remain up in the air. Mikel Arteta's move from Everton to Arsenal looks set to go down to the wire, while the Gunners are also keen to sign Yossi Benayoun. Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios are at Stoke but they have yet to sign for the Potters, while another two Tottenham players - Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton - are waiting to complete their respective moves to Aston Villa. Craig Bellamy is hotly tipped to re-join Liverpool, while the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Yakubu, Scott Dann and FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz could also be on the move. Down in the Championship, Brighton have yet to complete their stunning signing of Spanish winger Vicente. Told you there was a lot still to be sorted out...

2200: Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is (probably) in bed, his deals are (probably) all done. Don't even think about calling it a night yourselves though. There is just ONE HOUR left until the transfer window shuts and A LOT left to be resolved. There might even be more happening that we don't even know about yet...

Oxford United
have completed the signing of Middlesbrough forward Jonathan Franks on loan until 1 January

2155: DONE DEAL (AT LAST) They have taken their time to confirm it, but Arsenal have finally announced they have signed Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker. He joins on a four-year deal for a reporteted £9m. The first of a flurry of late-night Gunners' buys? Looks that way.

have signed Bournemouth winger Liam Feeney for an undisclosed fee. That one has been off and on, and off and on again a few times today. It is all done and dusted now though.

West Ham
have signed Ivory Coast utility man Guy Demel from Hamburg.

drippy4 on Twitter: "Arteta is a top signing for Arsenal! Can't help feeling Wenger has got him for a snip at £10m"

Arsenal supporter woof67 on the Mikel Arteta deal on Twitter: "I'm an Arsenal fan. I am thrilled with this! 2 hours ago it seemed we had no chance. I love how quick things can change!"

Everton fan peterwdj on Twitter: "Time for Ross Barkley to step up."

Everton fan rrengland3 on Twitter: "I'm not too concerned about Arteta. We have Rodwell, Coleman and Barkley coming through and he's our highest earner."

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "The fee for Mikel Arteta's move to Arsenal will be £10m. Everton resigned to him leaving."

2145: Everton fans: how are you feeling about Mikel Arteta right now. Arsenal fans: same question. Let me know. I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

2143: By the way, the resurrection of Mikel Arteta's move to Arsenal does not mean the Gunners will forget about Yossi Benayoun. BBC Sport's David Ornstein says Arsene Wenger is still looking to wrap up a deal for the Chelsea midfielder tonight.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Arteta is bitter blow for Everton. Thought they had seen off Arsenal two hours ago only for Arteta himself to force the issue."

2137: Mikel Arteta also told me (a fortnight ago): "I am happy here, I always have been. I want to aim to win trophies, play in the Champions League and keep doing better and better." I guess moving to Arsenal takes care of the Champions League part of those ambitions, doesn't it?

SportsAntidote on Twitter: "Why has a big club has not chased Arteta sooner? Barring the odd injury, he's been class season after season."

2134: I spoke to Mikel Arteta a couple of weeks ago and he said it was important the club kept hold of all their star players this summer... all except him, by the looks of things.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Mikel Arteta now happening because he asked to leave Everton after hearing of Arsenal's interest."

Man Utd striker Michael Owen on Twitter: "Tough night for Everton fans. A small squad seems to be getting smaller. Exciting times for QPR, Stoke and Arsenal."

2129: BBC Wiltshire's Chris Wise reports that Swindon striker Leon Clarke, who only joined the club from QPR 12 days ago, will be allowed to leave on loan following his bust-up with manager Paolo Di Canio after Tuesday's game against Southampton.

Rumour Mill
So, Mikel Arteta to Arsenal is back on and Yossi Benayoun to Arsenal is very much on. All has gone quiet on Bryan Ruiz to Newcastle/Fulham though. I wonder if he got on that helicopter?

The Insider
MK Dons boss Karl Robinson tells BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher about a potential last-minute signing: "I'm sat at my desk, it has been a busy day. I'm waiting for two players to arrive - both are currently driving here on the motorway. One is Mark Beevers, who I have signed from Sheffield Wednesday on loan. The other one is a player from a higher division who has suddenly become available. There had better not be any traffic problems because time is tight. When he arrives the chairman and I will be in the room while he has his medical, trying to sell the club to him. We hope to have that completed by 10.45 at the latest so we'll have time to iron out any last-minute bits and bobs and get him signed."

QPR midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter: "Twitter rumours boring me now, am just gonna go online at midnight and see what's actually happened... good luck."

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on Twitter: "ARTETA back on! Come on you Gooners!"

GrazDay on Twitter: "If Harry Redknapp's givng up for the day, the rest of us may as well do the same! No late Redknapp drama? What a letdown."

Don't go ANYWHERE. Imagine how bad you will feel if you miss a massive deal? And I've got a feeling there is a twist or two left tonight...

Not a surprise this, but West Ham have finally confirmed the signing of Henri Lansbury on season-long loan from Arsenal.

2113: More from Harry, and Chelsea fans might be interested in this... The Tottenham boss says his club turned down another bid from the Blues for Luka Modric on Tuesday. "£4om was apparently offered yesterday," says Redknapp. "It was a big offer turned down for sure. I am delighted the little man is still here." Like Carlos Tevez and Wesley Sneijder, it appears Modric is going nowhere tonight.

Signing number two of the day for Rochdale, with Peterborough frontman David Ball joining on a three-month loan deal.

2110: Here's more from Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp about his transfer dealings in the last few hours and days: "We've been trying to sign Gary Cahill, trying hard all day but Daniel Levy couldn't quite get it over the line. Peter Crouch's up at Stoke talking to them. Alan Hutton: it seems like he's at Aston Villa. Jermaine Jenas is at Villa. I'm sure David Bentley will do well at West Ham. I am absolutely washed out. I've been on the road at 5am every morning and it's a waste of time going to bed. We got Scott Parker in and Emmanuel Adebayor." He did escape from the car-park in the end by the way.

2017: Harry Redknapp is trying to drive home, but cannot get out of the carpark at Spurs Lodge. Kaka? "Never an option," according to the Spurs boss.

Head in hands
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has just told Sky Sports that he has pulled the plug on Sebastien Bassong's move to QPR because Spurs failed in their attempts to sign Bolton defender Gary Cahill.

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun, wanted by Arsenal and Liverpool, on Twitter: "Staying in London...will sign soon ... I will twitt when it happens."

have signed midfielder Callum Tapping from Tottenham Hotspur for a nominal fee. The 18-year-old, who was previously on the books at Hamilton Accies and Celtic, has signed a two-year contract with an option of a further 12 months.

2100: So, Kaka arrives on our deadline day radar, but the Brazilian maestro had better get his skates on if he is going to be a Spurs player tonight. Just TWO HOURS left before the transfer window shuts. That is 120 minutes, in case you were wondering.

have made their third signing of the day, with Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Giles Coke joining on a two-month loan deal. It was a bit flat at Gigg Lane earlier but things are really fizzing now.

Rumour Mill
I'm sure Harry Redknapp has got something special up his sleeve. Latest word on the Tweet is not Tim Cahill, though... it's only bloomin' Kaka. Only rumours at the moment Spurs fans, so don't get carried away (too much).

mcallaghanart on Twitter: "Tim Cahill and Van der Vaart would pair well at Spurs. C'mon 'arry, do your last minute surprise magic!"

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher on Twitter: Brighton still hoping to complete a deal for former Valencia winger Vicente. The 30-year-old Spain international is in continuing talks with the club, which are taking place at their impressive new stadium.

have signed West Ham striker Junior Stanislas for an undisclosed fee. They have also agreed an undisclosed fee with the Hammers for frontman Zavon Hines, who moved to the Clarets 13 days ago.

2043: More from BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis, who reports that Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan AND that Blackburn will complete deals for Scott Dann and Yakubu by the 11pm deadline. Lots of other moves to be wrapped up before then too - we might even get closure on Per Mertesacker to Arsenal if we are really lucky.

winger Gael Kakuta has joined Bolton on loan until 1 January, the London club has confirmed.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "I'm expecting Bryan Ruiz to reject Newcastle offer and sign for Fulham."

Coventry City
have signed Norwich City striker Cody McDonald for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal. The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at League Two Gillingham.

MK Dons
have signed Sheffield Wednesday defender Mark Beevers in a loan deal until 31 December.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Everton now happy there will be no late twists in Arteta tale. He stays but Beckford/Leicester & Yakubu/Blackburn close. And if Beckford/Yakubu go through then Everton expect to sign Drenthe/Stracqualursi. Simple."

Rumour Mill
Tim Cahill to Stoke? Now that's the kind of surprise deal I was talking about. Everton fans might be in for a long couple of hours though...

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "I have it on good authority that Stoke City had an offer turned down for Adam Johnson but are in for Everton's Tim Cahill."

In the pipeline
2029: I can confirm Newcastle United HAVE made a bid for FC Twente Bryan Ruiz, and are waiting to hear back from the Dutch club. I would imagine Fulham will be quite interested to see where that one goes...

2028: Don't know much about Royston Drenthe? He is a 24-year-old Dutch left-winger, known for his pace. He is about to move to Goodison Park on a one-year loan deal from Real Madrid.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Everton on verge of signing Royston Drenthe, who has arrived at Goodison."

From Mick T, via text: "Re 2003. Adam Johnson is a player I admire and have always wanted him at Arsenal , but it wont sort out our problems in the centre of the park. Come on Arsene, we need a top notch midfielder."

2023: Less than three hours until the transfer window closes. So, what are the big ones that have happened so far? Well, we're probably looking at Manchester City signing Owen Hargreaves, Scott Parker joining Tottenham, Joe Cole moving to Lille from Liverpool and Andre Santos signing for Arsenal from Fenerbahce, while Per Mertesacker's move to the Gunners is all but done. Deals that we are still waiting to happen - Peter Crouch is apparently at Stoke for a medical, while Spain winger Vicente is in talks with Brighton and Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas are at Aston Villa having their medical. Then there is Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz, who has been linked with Fulham, but Newcastle are also apparently making a late move for the FC Twente forward. Mikel Arteta's move from Everton to Arsenal has broken down. Ice cold? Wesley Sneijder joining Manchester United, Carlos Tevez joining anyone and Luka Modric leaving Spurs. Still plenty of time for all of this to change and surely there is a surprise in store for us all too? Surely!?

2021: DONE DEAL Bradford have made their third signing of transfer deadline day, this time going for experience in the form of goalkeeper Matt Duke on a two-year deal. The 34-year-old left Hull in the summer.

2020: DONE DEAL (courtesy of BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis)
Bolton have completed the signing of Liverpool's French striker David Ngog. There was talk of a £4m fee for the 22-year-old earlier today but I will firm that up for you when I can.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "(Very) Senior source at Stoke denies interest in Adam Johnson - (could be lying) but there it is."

M4rkieT on Twitter: "Same old Newcastle, all summer to buy a centre forward then on the eve of the window closing, off we go panic buying."

2014: So, Newcastle fans. Do you think the Magpies are really trying to sign a striker tonight or, like IamShaunWood, do you think it is all a Ruiz by Mike Ashley. (Sorry about that)

IamShaunWood on Twitter: "I can't see NUFC signing anyone. It's all smoke and mirrors. Feel sorry for Pardew. He's the one that has to face fans/media."

News from Scotland now, and Celtic have signed Moroccan left-back Badr El Kaddouri on a six-month loan from Dynamo Kiev. Will Badr be any good, though?

From anon, via text: "Re 2000. What is Arsenal's problem, deadline day isn't about how much a player is worth - it's about getting what is needed whatever the cost. Also Benayoun on loan? Are Arsenal having a laugh?"

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "Peter Crouch has just arrived at Stoke City's training ground."

Rumour Mill
A clutch of clubs are now being linked with Manchester City's England winger Adam Johnson, who might find his game-time a bit limited after the arrival of Samir Nasri. Stoke and Arsenal have been mentioned. Expect QPR to get involved once Neil Warnock hears he might be available.

BBC Sport
Robbie Savage on Football Focus Special: "I'm surprised Arsenal haven't gone for Scott Parker today. He's England's holding midfielder, and he's gone to Spurs for £5m."

have signed Manchester City midfielder Ahmed Benali on a season-long loan deal.

have signed Sheffield United forward Daniel Bogdanovic for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old returned from international duty with Malta to sign his one-year deal.

stemck on Twitter: "I want Arsene Wenger to pack his bags and leave Arsenal! Losing out on players for the sake of a few million has happened too often! Out!"

2000: Just the 10,800 seconds to go until the transfer window shuts. Or, if you prefer, THREE HOURS. Maybe someone needs to tell Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that, when it is this late in the day, you have to pay over the odds to get your man.

Rumour Mill
1957: You want rumours? I've got rumours. I've even got a deadline day helicopter! How about Newcastle trying to hijack Fulham's £10m deal for Brian Ruiz. Sky Sports News claim the Magpies have got a chopper on standby to whisk the FC Twente striker up to the north east. If you spot the Costa Rican international flying over your house en-route to St James' Park then please let me know.

Gunner77JF on Twitter: "What's Everton's problem???? £10m not enough for Arteta???? Wenger, up ur bid to £15m, u have the money!!"

seamo1008 on Twitter: "If the news is true & Everton knocked back £10m for Arteta, I applaud Kenwright for tryin to keep the squad intact."

1949: More news on players leaving Manchester City now. Chief football writer Phil McNulty says City are "fully expecting Craig Bellamy to complete move to Liverpool after medical & same with Shaun Wright-Phillips at QPR."

1948: I like the sound of Van Aanholt, especially the bit about him using his "intensity to defend very effectively". A deep thinker?

1947: I've got a little more reaction to Wigan's capture of Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt on loan. "Patrick is a player with enormous potential," said Latics boss Roberto Martinez. "Technically he is very gifted, very comfortable in possession and physically, he uses his intensity to defend very effectively."

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Blackburn hoping Scott Dann will sign a four-year deal soon despite late interest from other clubs."

have signed Chelsea's 21-year-old Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt on a season-long loan deal.

chairman Jeremy Wray tells BBC Wiltshire that midfielder Michael Timlin will be loaned out to Southend until January

Manchester City
have confirmed they have signed free-agent Owen Hargreaves on a one-year contract. Thanks for all your jokes about that one over the last 12 hours...

1940: Gazing out of my window at a stunning deadline day sunset in Manchester, I spot a blimp hovering close to Old Trafford. Wesley Sneijder making an unlikely and unexpected arrival? I doubt it. I think it's part of the TV coverage of the International Twenty20 match between England and India at the 'other' Old Trafford. If you are wondering what is happening in the cricket then you can follow all the action with Ben Dirs right now.

The Insider
Preston general manager and secretary Ben Rhodes tells BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher more about their arrival of Jamaica winger Keammar Daley: "We have just got international clearance for Keammar, which means he is now a Preston player. Securing it is a long process and you have to jump through hoops to get a work permit. There is an online form to complete, then you have to apply for a certificate of sponsorship. After that you have to input all the details into Fifa's transfer matching system. The other club also does this and all the details go to the relevant FA's in both countries. If all the details match up then you are issued with an international transfer certificate (cue all-round relief). There will not be any more deals involving PNE."

have signed Hull City winger Jamie Devitt on loan until January. The Irish 21-year-old has made one appearance for the Tigers this season.

Head in hands
Breathe again Everton fans. Look away Arsenal supporters. BBC Sport's David Ornstein understands that the Mikel Arteta deal is dead. The Gunners will NOT be going back in for the Spanish midfielder tonight.

have signed winger Keammar Daley from Jamaican club Tivoli Gardens on a two-year deal. More to follow on this one.

1927: Not a transfer, but another addition to the legions of free agents who, like Sol Campbell and Owen Hargreaves are not concerned with transfer deadlines - they can join clubs whenever they like (if, like Hargreaves from Manchester City, they get an offer). Norwich City have released midfielder Stephen Hughes by mutual consent. The 28-year-old made two Canaries appearances last season, and was loaned out to MK Dons.

1925: BBC Sport understands Arsenal had offered Everton £10m for Mikel Arteta. Not enough, it seems...

BBC Sport
Martin Keown on Football Focus Special: "I think a lot of enquires will have been made early for the big players, they don't go into these things lightly. It's interesting; it's the clubs who got hammered at the weekend who are making big changes. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will make a change, he's not happy with the squad, and it will have a different complexion by the end of the day."

From G in Putney, via text: "Just had a call off my mate who works in the kitchen at the Emirates and he has just seen Blackburn's giant defender Chris Samba arrive!"

Samba has arrived in the kitchen? Interesting. I thought Arsenal needed new players, not a new chef.

1920: Hmmm. Looks like transfer deadline day has just got a whole lot better for Everton fans, hasn't it? But Arsenal's hunt for a midfielder goes on... Maybe Yossi Benayoun should keep his phone switched on for the next hour or two...

Chief football writer Phil McNulty: "Arsenal's move for Mikel Arteta has broken down after they failed to agree a deal with Everton - it remans to be seen if the deal can be revived between now and the close of the transfer window."

1916: A quick message to Mikel Arteta, Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch, Gary Cahill and Yossi Benayoun. Got time on your hands while you are driven to a prospective new club/wait for your medical? Why not get in touch. The same goes for the rest of you lot too, whether you are on the move tonight or not. I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

BBC Radio 5 Live
More from West Bromwich Albion sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth, talking on BBC Radio 5 live about how to work the transfer window: "Clubs try to do their business early in the window, this year we did our business fairly early. With a club like ours loans are really important - you get two Premier League slots, we've used one, we could use one later today, or in January. We may use that before 11pm. You've got to find the right player at the right club, maybe a young player who wants to play in the Premier League."

Disgruntled Everton fan JackFaz91 on Twitter: "Buzzing for the Arteta money to go straight to the bank."

BBC Sport
Martin Keown on Football Focus Special: "Stoke have been in the Premier League for a few years now, they've made some astute signings. Free transfers such as Matthew Upson and Jonathan Woodgate; they need a striker, and if Peter Crouch comes in he will play that direct game, while Kenwyne Jones is also there."

have been quiet today but they have finally got their man. Shaun Maloney has signed a two-year deal for the Latics after joining from Celtic for an undisclosed fee.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "As mentioned before Everton in no mood to be forced into a cheap deal by Arsenal. Arsenal, once again, have left it very late. Not done yet."

Bakar_SG8 on Twitter: "Not made up! My brother has seen Bellamy near Stanley Park, possibly driving in Melwood direction."

I might have believed this tweet if it hadn't started with 'not made up'. Next you will be telling me the delay in the Bellamy-Liverpool move is because he went home to get his golf clubs first...

1903: It's all gone a little bit quiet on Craig Bellamy's move to Liverpool (or anywhere). News on that when I get any. QPR probably haven't given up on him either. The way Neil Warnock is going, he will be trying to sign you and me tonight too.

1902: Football Focus Special has just finished, but it will be back, at 2230 BST to be precise. Give this page a manual refresh to get rid of the blank window for now though.

1900: The clock keeps ticking doesn't it? Yes, I know clocks are quite well known to keep ticking but, tonight, every tick - and tock - counts. We have only FOUR HOURS to go until the transfer window closes. Harry Redknapp, the stage is yours...

From anonymous Magpies fan, via text: "What are Newcastle actually doing? Is it just the fans who see how desperate we are for a striker? Where has all that Andy Carroll money gone?"

Questions, questions.... I'd say 'no' to the second one, but can't help you with the others I'm afraid.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Am told Alan Hutton may have chosen Fulham rather than Villa and unsettled NCFC defender Danny Simpson in talks to go to Villa as result."

Rumour Mill
Mark Bright tells BBC Football Focus Special that Shaun Wright-Phillips is currently in a hotel in London waiting for permission from Manchester City to speak to a club, believed to be QPR. Blimey, Neil Warnock is signing a whole new team, or trying to.

Aldershot Town
have signed 19-year-old left-back Jordan Brown on a one-month loan from West Ham United.

1849: Yossi Benayoun is the most wanted man in English football by the looks of things. I didn't see that one coming.

CRK33 on Twitter: "Any news on the Liverpool front? maybe one last big signing? please?"

Hawkesy_ on Twitter: "Villa going for Benayoun would be amazing, Come on Mcleish pull your finger out (hopefully he sees this tweet)."

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Further info on Benayoun: not sure if Arsenal want loan or a permanent deal."

1842: News now of Gary Cahill, but from a Bolton perspective. BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan says: "A very good Bolton source tells me he thinks Gary Cahill is unlikely to leave and that Man City were in talks with him at one stage. That deal fell through because the clubs couldn't agree on players going the other way. Source also believes Arsenal could have bought Cahill for £10m-£12m and that the defender had been left frustrated by whole episode." Interesting. I can't see Harry Redknapp giving up easily tonight, mind.

A rare arrival at Gigg Lane this week. Northampton Town striker Shaun Harrad has joined Bury for an undisclosed fee. He will have to fill Ryan Lowe's shooting boots following his move to Sheffield Wednesday.

BBC Radio 5 Live
West Bromwich Albion sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth talking on BBC Radio 5 live about how to work the transfer window: "It's an on-going process, you tend to look one or two windows in advance. Since I've been doing this job we've changed leagues nearly every year, apart from last year where we stayed up. We tend to run with two lists and try to plan ahead. Of course, the one thing you can't plan for is injuries, or people coming in for your better players, instead you tend to work on weaknesses in your squad. All clubs have expectations, you're always under pressure. I'm not under as much as the manager, who live result to result, week to week. For me it's a bit longer term."

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Liverpool were favourites for Benayoun but those close to Israeli now say 'good chance' he's going to Arsenal - depends on Arteta."

Oldham have signed Norwich City midfielder Tom Adeyemi on loan until 3 January.

BBC Radio 5 Live
1833: Barnet manager Lawrie Sanchez, who has also been in charge at Fulham and Wycombe, speaking about the transfer window BBC Radio 5 live: "Some managers thrive on it, some hate it. The window comes into the season. The Football League has been back three weeks now, really you don't want to be talking about player movement at this stage, it's a distraction for managers. You can get injuries, you start panicking, spend money on a player who's not worth it. I don't think the managers leave it late, they know who they want from the start. I think the chief executives at clubs want to leave it to the last minute, and think if they use some brinkmanship they'll get a knock down price. But that can fall through and you end up with second choice."

1830: Dan Walker is hosting a Football Focus Special on the BBC News Channel and Red Button and you can watch it right here too. Just give this page a manual refresh and it will appear at the top.

Not many big transfers happening elsewhere in Europe today, but here's one. Bosnian playmaker Miralem Pjanic has joined AS Roma from Olympique Lyon for 11 million euros. Surely his nickname is 'Don't', right?

Into League One, and Darlington have confirmed that 19-year-old striker Michael Smith has joined Charlton Athletic on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

1821: It would appear that Tottenham are clearing the decks for the arrival of Bolton defender Gary Cahill. Time is running out for that one to go through, but then we know Harry Redknapp likes to leave things late, doesn't he?

What's been happening north of the border today? Quite a bit, actually. Inverness Caledonian Thistle have recruited 19-year-old Aiden Chippendale on loan from Huddersfield Town. The winger makes the move to the Scottish Premier League club, who have been hit by injury problems, until January. He becomes Terry Butcher's second signing of the day after the capture of Wolves midfielder David Davis. And Hamilton Accies have signed 26 year old midfielder Paul Currie from Berwick Rangers, after paying a four figure fee to the Shielfield club, the club's first bid having been rejected yesterday. The player has joined on a contract to the end of the season.

In the pipeline
have been busy today haven't they? ...and they haven't finished yet. BBC Sport understands Sebastien Bassong's move from Tottenham to QPR is 'pretty much done'. Bassong is in Cameroon, though, so getting the paperwork sorted might prove a slight issue. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is moving a few players on isn't he? I wonder why...

1811: Right then, time is ticking down until the window closes, and with less than five hours left it is a good time to take stock. Arguably the biggest completed deals so far today are Scott Parker joining Tottenham, Joe Cole moving to Lille from Liverpool and Andre Santos signing for Arsenal from Fenerbahce, while Per Mertesacker's move to the Gunners is all but done. Deals that we are still waiting to happen - well, there is the Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios situation, Spain winger Vicente joining Brighton, Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas joining Aston Villa, Owen Hargreaves signing for Manchester City and Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta holding talks with Arsenal. Ice cold? Wesley Sneijder joining Manchester United, Carlos Tevez joining anyone and Luka Modric leaving Spurs.

Blackpool have signed 19-year-old West Brom defender James Hurst on a season-long loan deal. The Baggies can recall the England Under-20 international full-back at any stage.

From anonymous Everton fan, via text: "Arteta has been a great servant for us over the years. Sad to see him leave but I bear no grudge, he deserves his chance at Champions League football. Positives for Everton are that he is our highest earner off of the wage bill."

joecoffey91 on Twitter: "Give me something about Newcastle, anything! We NEED a striker."

Sorry, can't help you there!

aminhn on Twitter: "Re 1750. so the "big name" signing at Arsenal is set to be Arteta? I was thinking bigger but at least we're signing someone creative."

From Phil, Arsenal fan in Croydon, via text: "Re 1750. Very good for us if we can get Arteta, but we definitely need another midfielder, maybe Benayoun... we still lack depth. Mertesacker is a quality signing though, very pleased with that impending deal."

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Gary Cahill to Spurs remains possibility as biggest deal to be done between now and close of window. Time running out though."

1804: Not much happening signings-wise at Old Trafford tonight but the cricket ground down the road with the same name is awfully busy. The International Twenty20 match between England and India is just about to begin and you can follow all the action with Ben Dirs right now.

Here's one departure from Goodison Park, but breathe again Toffees fans because it isn't Arteta, yet. Scunthorpe have made their second signing of the day, bringing in Everton's Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender Shane Duffy on loan for a month.

1800: Just FIVE HOURS to go until the transfer window shuts. That is still a long time for Everton fans to close their eyes and cover their ears...

In the pipeline
An update on the Owen Hargreaves situation - his rather sensational move to Manchester City is expected to go through tonight. Don't head down to their ground, though, as he won't be there. Apparently he is completing the paperwork for the deal at his house. Nice.

1758: DONE DEAL We heard about it earlier, but Swindon Town have now completed the signing of 19-year-old West Ham forward Ahmed Abdulla on loan until January.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "I'm told Yossi Benayoun is heading for Arsenal"

OptaJoe on Twitter: "2.7 - Only five players have created more chances per 90 mins in the Premier League since 06/07 than Mikel Arteta. Bid."

In the pipeline
are optimistic that Junior Stanislas will sign on loan from West Ham later this evening but there are just a few things to iron out.

1755: DONE DEAL Striker Alex Revell joins Rotherham from Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher on Twitter: Vicente has had a medical at Brighton and the Championship club are in on-going talks with the Spaniard, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Valencia. He would surely be one of the biggest names in the Championship and a huge coup for the Seagulls."

1750: Er, bad news for Everton fans. BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan says Arsenal and Everton are now talking over a possible deal for Mikel Arteta. And BBC Sport's David Ornstein tells me that Arteta is now the only player the Gunners are pursuing before the transfer window shuts. How do you feel about that, Gunners fans?

Tomst7 on Twitter: "Re spurs_fan1991. You must be of the only fans who doesn't want Crouch to leave. Most would give him a piggy-back to Stoke."

From anon, via text: "Do Wigan not exist today? At least no-one wants any of our players!"

From anon, via text: "I'm chuffed as a Stoke fan if we get Peter Crouch, if you look at the way we play, his height is made for us!"

1746: Right, deals are dropping thick and fast now, and it is only going to get busier. How has your deadline day been so far, and how is it shaping up? I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

1742: According to 5 live's Ian Dennis, Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas have turned up for their medicals at Aston Villa. It's all happening in the 'second city' at the moment because Scott Dann is "close" to completing his move from Birmingham City to Blackburn too.

The Scottish FA on Twitter: "Alan Hutton given permission to leave camp to discuss transfer to Aston Villa. Will return for training tomorrow."

1737: DONE DEAL Liverpool have completed the signing of United States Under-18 striker Villyan Bijev from California Odyssey after the youngster impressed on trial at the academy during the summer. Bijev does not yet have a work permit so has gone on loan to German side Fortuna Dusseldorf with immediate effect.

spurs_fan1991 on Twitter: "Re 1727. No Crouchy! Please don't go!"

1730: Swansea City boss Brendan Rogers said earlier he needs to sign some defenders today - and he is in talks with Fulham's Rafik Halliche and Watford's Adrian Mariappa... but not Middlesbrough captain Matthew Bates. Boro received an enquiry for Bates from the Welsh club, but no bid has been received, contrary to earlier reports.

Selb85 on Twitter: "Daniel Sturridge seems to have pulled up at Melwood 15 times today, can someone just show him where the front door is?"

1728: I'm still waiting to tie this one up but I think we all know that Per Mertesacker is joining Arsenal by now. If not, where have you been all day. Here's a bit more reaction from the the 26-year-old, who told Werder Bremen's website: "I had a great time at Werder, and I owe a lot to the club. The move to London is a wish come true, to take another step in my career. The English Premier League has for me always represented an interesting challenge."

1727: More details from Ian Dennis about Peter Crouch, and a little bit more besides: "Peter Crouch, I'm told, is on the way to Stoke. Certainly his representatives are. Cameron Jerome is already at the Britannia Stadium discussing terms and having a medical. It might make the Wilson Palacios deal go through as well, as that was originally a joint deal. And Arsenal are still trying to bring in a midfielder."

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Peter Crouch is on his way to Stoke City."

1722: So, where were we? Craig Bellamy going to Liverpool? Possibly. And what about Peter Crouch?

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "David Ngog is currently having a medical at Bolton as Liverpool continue to off-load fringe players - deal imminent."

1719: BBC 5 Live's Mike Sewell: "Following on from what Phil McNulty is saying, Arsenal are doing their utmost to sign a midfielder to fill the gaps left by Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. I understand that should it happen then it's likely to be an England-based player. Arteta clearly falls into that category. Watch this six-hour space!"

1717: More from BBC Sport's Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta. McNulty says: "Everton's Mikel Arteta is emerging as the latest big-name target for Arsenal as they seek a midfield man to complete their signings. Word on Merseyside is no deal as yet - but Everton are vulnerable to a big offer and £10m may yet be enough. Will be a tense few hours for David Moyes if Arsenal press strongly."

1715 DONE DEAL Looks like West Ham and Tottenham have been speaking to each other a lot today. It has just been confirmed that, as revealed by BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan a couple of minutes ago, out-of-favour Spurs midfielder David Bentley has joined the Hammers on a season-long loan.

1714: DONE DEAL Bradford have signed former Burnley defender Dean Overson and loaned striker Terry Dixon, who only joined the Bantams on Tuesday, to AFC Halifax.

1713: DONE DEAL Portsmouth have signed 17-year-old midfielder Jed Wallace from Ryman Premier Division side Lewes.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "West Ham and Tottenham are close to agreeing a loan deal for David Bentley. West Ham also closing in on Hamburg's Guy Demel as they look to spend Parker cash."

1709: Disappointingly, I forgot to tell you at 1700 BST that there are only SIX HOURS left until the transfer window shuts. Just five hours and 50 minutes left now...

StevenoSchmidt on Twitter: "Word on Tyneside is that Bendtner might be signing tonight, keeping my fingers crossed. With more playing time he could be a gem. "

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Still get sense, despite current stance, Arteta and Arsenal may develop in the next few hours."

1706: DONE DEAL Remember former Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman? Thought so. He has joined BATE Borisov of Belarus. The 32-year-old Serbia international had been playing in Hong Kong.

1705: By the way, the fun doesn't have to end at 2300 BST with these Sol Campbell rumours - he is a free agent and unaffected by deadline day. He's already been linked with Gateshead and Brighton in the last few hours but Sol's agent told me earlier that "nothing is happening" with him today. Sol has picked up an injury while training with Arsenal and is just "concentrating on getting fit".

Kieran_Hennigan on Twitter: "Here's a genuine corker: Sol Campbell has just arrived at Swansea - my cousin works on reception."

1659: You might have seen earlier that Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Enda Stevens from Irish side Shamrock Rovers in January 2012. The 21-year-old defender is understandably chuffed. "This is massive for me. It's a dream come true," said Stevens. "I never expected it to come as soon as it has, especially after the last few games in Europe. I grew up following and watching the Premier League and I can dream of playing in it now."

1657: DONE DEAL BBC Radio Manchester report that Scunthorpe have had an undisclosed six-figure bid accepted by Bury for midfielder Damien Mozika, who has handed in a transfer request. He played under Iron boss Alan Knill at Bury last season. The Shakers have already seen prolific scorer Ryan Lowe leave to join Sheffield Wednesday this week.

1655: DONE DEAL Watford have completed the signing of Nottingham Forest forward Joe Garner on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

1653: Still agonisingly short of a done deal but here is some more news on Per Mertesacker's inevitable arrival at Arsenal: The big German defender has announced on his personal website that he has signed a contract lasting until 2015. Roughly translated, he says: "For Per Mertesacker a long-cherished wish has come true. He never made a secret of the fact that most excites him the English league." Good to see him speaking in the third person already...

Rumour Mill
BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher on Twitter: "Rumours flying around that Brighton are close to signing former Valencia winger Vicente may not be all that wide of the mark. There is a strong possibility the club may have news on the 30-year-old in an hour or so."

1647: If you want to follow some actual sport instead of rumour and conjecture, then can I point you in the direction of our US Open live text commentary... Andy Murray is up later but first, Laura Robson is playing Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The Insider
Leicester City left-back Paul Konchesky tells BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher what players who are not on the move get up to on deadline day: "With training finished for the day, I'll be putting my feet up and watching the final few hours of the transfer deadline to see whether we sign anybody. At Leicester you never quite know."

1643: More news of Sunderland's (apparently) want-away striker Asamoah Gyan now. BBC Newcastle understands that, contrary to reports, Asamoah Gyan has not handed in a transfer request, and is currently away on international duty with Ghana. So, is Gyan goin' (or stayin')?

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Told Royston Drenthe to Everton is "a possibility" - you wait all summer then two come along at once."

1639: DONE DEAL Fulham have completed the signing of 31-year-old Juventus defender Zdenek Grygera on a one-year deal, with the option of a further year. The Czech Republic international joins on a free transfer after his contract with Juventus was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday.

1639: Into League One now. Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell has told BBC Radio Solent that it is now "unlikely" there will be any movement in or out at Dean Court. Millwall had made a bid for Liam Feeney, while the Cherries were hoping to sign a striker but both moves have broken down.

1638: BBC 5 Live's Mike Sewell: In addition to Gilles Sunu joining Lorient on a permanent deal, fellow Arsenal striker Joel Campbell could also be heading to the French club on loan. The Costa Rican joined the Gunners on a permanent deal from Deportivo Saprissa less than two weeks ago.

1633: DONE DEAL West Ham have agreed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury on an initial season-long loan. He will be filling Scott Parker's shoes... happy with that, Hammers fans?

1631: Plenty of rumours surrounding Chelsea winger Florent Malouda today, linking him with Arsenal, amongst others. But the French international has made it clear he has no intention of leaving the London club. "I've still got two years left on my Chelsea contract," he said. "My objective is to extend by one year until the 2014 World Cup." Malouda is currently in Albania on international duty with France.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "So in Craig Bellamy's rush to the tape Liverpool just lead QPR - but might still need to be referred back to Manchester City."

jjmeehan on Twitter: "Bellamy leaving Wales training ground, on the way to Melwood!!! Interesting choice by Daglish!"

From Toby on Merseyside, via text: "Just spotted Daniel Sturridge pull up at Melwood training ground, with his agent."

1625: Some transfer news from Russia now, with big-spending FC Anzhi Makhachkala announcing their latest signing following the arrivals of Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan and Yuri Zhirkov from Chelsea earlier this summer. Goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov has signed a five-year deal contract after joining from Dynamo Moscow BUT he has been loaned to CSKA Moscow for six months as a replacement for Russia's first-choice goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, who is sidelined by a cruciate ligament injury he sustained on Sunday.

1622: DONE DEAL Manchester City striker John Guidetti has completed a loan move to Feyenoord for the rest of the season. The 19-year-old Sweden Under-21 international initially looked set to leave City permanently this summer but instead signed a new three-year deal.

Henry_Wms on Twitter: "My friend doing a stadium tour around Loftus Road just said he saw Kenwyne Jones!!!"

1616: News from League Two now. BBC Wiltshire understands that Swindon are trying to tie up a loan move for 19-year-old West Ham forward Ahmed Abdulla until January and off-load at least one of their first-team players.

1613: Speaking of Lorient, and not Leyton Orient, the French side have signed Arsenal forward Gilles Sunu. The 20-year-old, who joined the Gunners at the age of 15 but never played a Premier League game for the club, had been on loan there last season and has now signed a four-year deal.

1612: Not quite a done deal yet, but almost. Arsenal have confirmed they are to sign Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker "subject to the completion of formal registration processes".

1610: Remember that great transfer deadline day in August 2006, when West Ham stunned us all by swooping for Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano? Yes, me too. Could the Hammers' east London neighbours Leyton Orient be about to emulate them with a swoop for two South Americans superstars in the making, as has been reported this week? Er, no. The O's have denied all knowledge of Linhares' Brazilian teenagers Roger and Mayrinik... And suggest they might have actually signed for French side Lorient instead. An easy mistake to make. The O's ARE in the market for a winger, but are waiting until the loan window opens next week.

1605: Speaking of Harry Redknapp, here's some Tottenham news... no-one other than Scott Parker arriving yet though, but the clear-out could be continuing. 1438: More from our sports news correspondent Dan Roan, now, with the news that talks between Chelsea and FC Porto over a move to Stamford Bridge for Alvaro Pereira have broken down... while reports that Chelsea defender Alex is on his way to Arsenal are wide of the mark. Not happening.

Which is nice.

1430: Right - we've been waiting all day for an update on the Yossi Benayoun situation, well BBC Sport's John Sinnott has been speaking to his representatives, who say: "It will be Tottenham, Arsenal or Liverpool. We don't know yet." Blimey.

In the pipeline
With more than eight and a half hours to go until the transfer window shuts, still plenty of room for manoeuvre on this greatest of great days. Arsenal have yet to confirm deals for Per Mertesaker, Andre Santos and Park Chu-young, Tottenham will wrap up their move for Scott Parker (at least), Shaun Wright-Phillips looks set for QPR - while deals involving Craig Bellamy, Cameron Jerome, Anton Ferdinand and Scott Dann remain on the cards. Oh, and Manchester City have still yet to confirm the signing of Owen Hargreaves on a free transfer. Intrigue, people... intrigue.

1416: DONE DEAL Not a signing, but it's a bit quiet still so let me tell you that Crystal Palace have extended defender Peter Ramage's loan spell from QPR until 15 January. He has made five appearances during his initial month-long loan spell.

TShow77 on Twitter: "Almost every transfer depends on another transfer going through. So we're just waiting for that one move to start it all up."

BBC Radio 5 Live
1410: BBC 5 Live's Mike Sewell: "West Ham are trying to sign the Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury on loan. He spent much of last season on loan at Norwich."

1405: Right then, as we wait for things to get moving, here's a bit of background on transfer windows past. The biggest in terms of money spent was 2008 when £675m was spent - the year of Robinho and Dimitar Berbatov to Man City and Man Utd respectively - but this year is running it close. After £225m was spent in January, we have already seen nearly £400m spent this summer, and some big deals could yet go through before the end of play today. Anyone betting against this being the most expensive year in Premier League history?

But the club are likely to reach an agreement today with Shamrock Rovers' Enda Stevens to join in January. The left-back wants to finish the season in Ireland and take part in the Europa League against Spurs.

1357: Suggestions Lille might now be willing to let prized midfielder Eden Hazard leave following Joe Cole's arrival have been rubbished by the French champions. Arsenal have been interested in Belgium international Hazard but BBC Sport's David Ornstein says Lille have not received any bids and insist the 20-year-old is going nowhere.

BBC Sport's Phil Dawkes has been chasing, but Barnsley, Coventry, Doncaster, Portsmouth and Reading all report nothing doing at present, Bristol City aren't ruling anything in or out, while the signing of Emile Sinclair from Macclesfield could well turn out to be Peterborough's only business of the day. However, there could be some waves made by Watford, who we understand are likely to be active, and Blackpool, who are hopeful of adding two or three by end of play.

1305: And yes I will decide what constitutes a 'rabbit-out-of-the-hat' deal and my word is final. Ahem.

1303: Headlines so far to follow, people... but so far the biggest news surrounds non-deals rather than sealed-deals it would seem wouldn't it? Luka Modric? Staying put. Carlos Tevez? Staying put. Wesley Sneijder? Apparently staying put too. It's around about this time, though, that things start getting exciting... and if there isn't a rabbit pulled out of the hat before 2300 BST you can all call me Sammy 'Dull Deals' Lyon. Honest.

MrAnthonyFox on Twitter: "Just seen the sandwich lady at work! does this mean I'm about to eat?"

Richard P via text: "Just seen Jimmy Kebe arriving at Leicester City's King Power Stadium. £4m bid accepted by Reading. Cashing in on last year of contract."

henrywalmsley on Twitter: "[Fulham striker] Clint Dempsey should be chained to the cottage today if Arsenal rumours are true."

The Insider
Asked how many players he expects to sign if all goes well today, Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers says: "Up to three or maybe four." Busy.

1031: Andre Pierre Gignac, linked with a loan move to Fulham, is staying at Marseille, OM sporting director Jose Anigo tells BBC Sport's John Sinnott.

1027: BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan has been in touch with Aston Villa and Wolves - and the word is that there is nothing much doing so far at either club. However, our man has been told there may be movements at the latter later on, so worth keeping an ear out.

DaithiMolloy on Twitter: "What is Huddlestone playing at?! He really knows how to make grown men squirm and giggle."

Tim, Keighley via text: "Arsenal interested in Belgian defender Mark de Man. Apparently, they are also interested in his compatriots, striker Skor de Gaulle and goalkeeper Bloek de Schott."

Rumour Mill
Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Whispers on the grapevine that Aston Villa may yet try to drag Joe Cole off the Eurostar to Lille and take him to the midlands."

1021: And a little update from north of the border now as BBC Sport's Chris McLaughlin reports: "Despite being made aware of availability, Sunderland, Blackburn and Stoke have all knocked back the chance to sign Celtic striker Georgios Samaras."

Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone on Twitter: "Can't believe who just sneaked into the training ground the back way! Wow."

1016: Tottenham fans... check this tweet out from Tom Huddlestone...

KrisCorssen on Twitter: "Apparently James Milner has been allowed to leave the England squad, and has been spotted en route to Melwood training ground, possible?"

Billy, Bolton via text: "Just seen Tony Hibbert de-boarding a barge on the Leeds/Liverpool canal close to the Reebok Stadium."

mattspiro on Twitter: "French paper La Voix du Nord say Lille will give Liverpool first refusal on Edin Hazard in 2012 as part of Joe Cole loan."

Rumour Mill
Check this one out - QPR are said to be in talks to sign Welsh striker Craig Bellamy from Manchester City. Would be a fine signing, I reckon. Will anyone else make a late move for him?

The Insider
Bolton manager Owen Coyle tells BBC Sport's Paul Plunkett that a deal for Liverpool striker David Ngog could still happen: "He's a very good player and I've been a big admirer for a long time. We'll have to wait and see if it happens today."

Telvinder on Twitter: "Amazing how it looked like Carlos Tevez leaving Man City was going to be the biggest deal of the summer, now he's not even mentioned."

1004: Gillingham defender Simon King is set to join Plymouth Argyle on a month-long loan, report BBC South West.

1002: Fulham/Brian Ruiz update from BBC Sport's John Sinnott: "Twente's president and CEO are in talks over the transfer of Bryan Ruiz to Fulham for about £10m," Twente's commercial manager Jan van Halst told BBC Sport. "We expect to reach an agreement, though nothing is definite yet, but there are still are a few hours left. Bryan is currently in London."

Paddy, Liverpool via text: "Just saw [Everton chairman] Bill Kenwright leaving John Lennon airport with the big Swiss Tobe Le Rone. Don't know were they got the funds for that! Love deadline day!!"

markdumpleton on Twitter: "Multiple reports of Yakubu being seen in/around Carrow Road, possible late Canaries deal today it seems!"

0957: Plenty of expectation around that Owen Hargreaves will be completing a move to Manchester City today. Who saw that coming? I tell you one person who didn't - City and England keeper Joe Hart. Our chief football writer Phil McNulty reports: "Joe Hart's measured reaction to Owen Hargreaves' move to join him at Man City: "Pardon? Is he? Wowzers. Where's that come from? Really?" 'Wowzers'. Can't believe Hart is stealing my phrases.

moonmonkey0794 on Twitter: "My dad saying Riccardo Montolivo has been seen at Aeroporto di Firenze. We believe he's heading for a shock move to Arsenal."

Nathan, Bolton fan, via text: "If Gary Cahill is off to Spurs...why haven't Bolton gone in for Scott Dann? He would be a great replacment! Also, I'd take Bentley as part of the Cahill deal as it looks like we've missed out on SWP..."

SoccerDotTel on Twitter: "The funny thing about Benayoun is, with so much interest in him doesn't that show that he's worth keeping?"

0950: And the Stoke news doesn't stop there... a deal for Wilson Palacios is very close, with a fee having been agreed with Spurs, personal terms agreed and the player has passed his medical. The transfer has stalled, however, because Tottenham are waiting to see who they get in. As for Peter Crouch - the Potters have held talks with Tottenham and still have an interest in the player, but they have got no further forward than that.

0947: Something a bit more tangible now, though, from Stoke, who have confirmed to BBC Sport's Simon Austin that Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner's father and agent is indeed at the club having talks. The club have denied, however, that they have bid for Cameron Jerome - insisting no contact has been made with either the striker of Birmingham regarding his signature.

0943: Stop the press. We've just tried Bolton boss Owen Coyle on his mobile and while he didn't actually answer, we can officially confirm that we connected on a foreign ring tone. Dun dun dun...

Rumour Mill
Reports suggesting that Blackburn have agreed a fee with Birmingham for defender Scott Dann. If true, will that mean Chris Samba is on his way?

J16Sayers on Twitter: "Enda Stevens has completed a move from Shamrock Rovers to Villa - but will not join the squad until jan to allow him to play in Europe."

James, Everton fan via text: "Transfer deadline day is the most depressing day of the year."

JMDowningUK on Twitter: "Hearing reliable news that Robert Snodgrass could be on his way out of Leeds with Blackburn and two other Prem clubs interested."

0933: We've been rolling for just over an hour and a half here, folks - and there are still 13 and a half hours to go until business for the day is closed. Plenty of time, then, for you lot to get involved. Tweet the commentary via #BBCFootball, tweet me @sampatricklyon or text in via 81111 (UK). This is your time to shine.

0928: Celtic chief executive Peter Lawell has been talking on his way into business this morning - and confirmed that Shaun Maloney is indeed on his way to Wigan. He denied, however, that anything is happening with Liam Ridgewell.

0923: All right, not the hardest hitting of news, but still.

Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun on Twitter: "Waiting for connection flight."

0922: And talking of Yossi...

Rumour Mill
One man I've yet to mention today - Yossi Benayoun. The Israel midfielder Tweeted last night that he was due in London to sort out a transfer away from Chelsea, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all reported to be in for him.

Steve_Hibees on Twitter: "My mate's neighbour has just spotted ex-Hearts star Christian Nade flying into Glasgow Airport to sign for Rangers."

Luke, Swansea via text: "Booked the day off for Transfer deadline day, but the missus wants to do something, is it too late to release her on a free or place her on the transfer list? Willing to listen to offers."

0917: And what about Manchester United, huh? Sources at the top level at Old Trafford have hinted their business for this window has long since been completed - but who would bet against them making a last-ditch bid for someone? There is money to spend there, you would think. Wesley Sneijder? One man looking likely to leave the club, meanwhile, is Federico Macheda. Newcastle are thought to be in for him.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein on Twitter: "West Brom tell me one (probably Marek Cech) or two leaving to enable late move for new defender. Also not best pleased re: Owen Hargreaves, who they hoped to sign."

0911: Birmingham news courtesy of BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan - bosh. "A source close to Birmingham City says the club is yet to receive bids for Scott Dann and Cameron Jerome despite reported interest from Blackburn and Stoke respectively, but there are indications they may come during the day. And although Liam Ridgewell had a transfer request rejected on Tuesday, there might also be developments on that front. Celtic are one of the clubs linked with Ridgewell."

HellesMammut80 on Twitter: "Genuine? A good friend of the brother of my oldest cousin's wife works at Heathrow and says he saw Lass Diarra...Harry Magic?"

Ben, Manchester via text: "Genuine. Carlisle set to sign Man Utd winger Jesse Lingard on loan until January."

0906: Liverpool new-boy Sebastian Coates, by the way, has been given the number 16 shirt, the Anfield club have confirmed.

BBC Sport's John Sinnott on Twitter: "'There was no Arsenal offer for Borussia Dortmund's Mario Goetze'-BD's Hans-Joachim Watzke tells BBC. 'Anyway we will not sell him.'"

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Arsenal inquired about Mikel Arteta and Marouane Fellaini is also on the radar - but Everton are not expecting any major sales today."

Rumour Mill

Talk that Arsenal striker Nicklas Bentdner's dad is at Stoke to negotiate a transfer for the Dane from London to the Britannia Stadium.

0855: DONE DEALS In case you missed them, by the way, a few deals were wrapped up late last night. Liverpool completed the signing of Uruguay International Sebastian Coates, Swansea City brought in German keeper Gerhard Tremmel and Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay said he is "ongoing with things" as he looks to bring Ben Turner to the club from Coventry City.

AJEverton001 on Twitter: "Really surprised no one's come in for Anelka. Chelsea don't need him - they've got Mata, Drogba, Torres, Lakaku."

cafcbrad on Twitter: "Dann to Blackburn from under Stoke's noses."

0848: Of course, though, if you have any actual news, make sure you let me know about it as well. Perhaps starts your Tweets or Texts with the word "GENUINE"? Or, "I HAVEN'T JUST MADE THIS UP, HONEST". The latter might eat up too many characters, mind.

0846: I blooming love transfer deadline day, me. What I really, really love, is spurious Tweets and Texts like your mum's sister's best mate's dog walker who claims to have just seen the back of Zinedine Zidane's head outside the City Ground in Nottingham. Bootiful.

jwinchester25 on Twitter: "My mate at the Gatwick has just seen Giuseppe Rossi walking through arrivals - Spurs bound?"

FHarris10 on Twitter: "Aaah transfer deadline day, you beautiful, beautiful thing. Blackburn need at least three signings today."

In the pipeline
And plenty, too, to stay across in Scotland. Steven Davis could be about to leave Ibrox - possibly for Aston Villa - Leicester are pondering a new bid for Rangers' Nikica Jelavic and Celtic are eyeing bids for Nicky Shorey and Liam Ridgewell.

In the pipeline
A few more to keep an eye out for today, then. David Ngog to leave Liverpool, Sunderland, Stoke and QPR to battle it out for Peter Crouch, Tottenham to make a move for Gary Cahill, Wigan to move for Shaun Maloney, Brian Ruiz and Zdenek Grygera to arrive at Fulham and movement at Everton, too. Though probably through the exit rather than the entrance. Joseph Yobo and Yakubu are close to leaving, it is reported.

SJG_23 on Twitter: "Papiss Demba Cisse spotted arriving via someone's fancy car at Sunderland training ground."

Matt, Shipley via text: "Just seen Wayne Bridge at Leeds train station. Doubt he's going to Elland Road so must be en route to elsewhere."

JacksterCFC on Twitter: "Just seen Alvaro Perreira at Heathrow Airport. On the way to Stamford Bridge?"

In the pipeline
Now then, who could be going where today then? Well it would appear Arsenal will tie up deals for Per Mertesaker, Andre Santos and Park Chu-young, Tottenham will wrap up their move for Scott Parker (at least), Shaun Wright-Phillips will join QPR, Joe Cole will switch to French side Lille, Aston Villa are in for Spurs full-back Alan Hutton, and arguably the most surprising of summer transfers - Manchester City will sign Owen Hargreaves on a free transfer. And that barely even scratches the surface.

0827: By the way - you want to give this page an extremely cheeky manual refresh now, whereupon you will find a magnificent set of videos at the top of this here page. Love it.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Spurs chairman Levy said from day one Modric would not be sold to Chelsea & has held his nerve. And for that plenty should admire him."

Steve, Edinburgh via text: "Never mind Hibs doing any transfer business, how about a new manager."

Breaking news
0822: And don't go thinking that just because there are still 14 hours and 40 minutes until the transfer window shuts that I don't already have actual, real-life, tangible news. Oh no. Usually ridiculously shy with the press, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has broken his vow of silence to update us all on the Luka Modric situation. Linked all summer with a move to Chelsea, Modric - Redknapp insists - is going absolutely nowhere. Are you 100% sure, Redknapp is asked? "1,000,000% sure. He's staying."

mike__richards on Twitter: "Just seen Mauro Zarate at a car rental's in the John Lennon International airport."

0818: I trust you are all abreast of the latest transfer news and nonsense? If not, our gossip column is always the best place to start. Marek Hamsik to Arsenal? Spurs and Fulham battling it out for Sulley Muntari? Liverpool target Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka? Chelsea to sign Alvaro Pereira? Ooh I tell you, there's more snatched whispers and gossip about than at an octogenarians' knitting circle.

HeRaySingh on Twitter: "The most important day of Arsenals season."

Tom, Newcastle fan, Cambridge via text: "Desperate for a new striker. No more goalkeepers please."

NickMotown on Twitter: "I hope Health & Safety have equipped you with the requisite 16 gallons of coffee & triple strength fingertip pads."

0814: But before we dip our toe into the warm waters of the day's happenings, here's how you lot can get in touch today. Tweet the commentary via #BBCFootball, Tweet me @sampatricklyon or text in via 81111 (UK) - and let's get this bad boy cooking, yeah?

0811: And north of the border, almost literally anything could happen. On a transfer front anyway. Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibernian... you name them - when they move, we move.

0809: Just think about it. You would have to think that Arsenal have business to do, that Manchester City will be in the mix, that Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle have money to spend, that QPR will continue their push to be the window's biggest movers and shakers, and that Everton might actually, you never know, shock us all and actually spend some real money. Or get a loan in, maybe. And, of course, transfer deadline day without some wheeling and dealing in Tottenham would be like a fish without a bicycle. Nonsensical.

0807: You lot know the score, right? Basically, English and Scottish clubs have until 2300 BST to complete any last-minute signings, at which time the transfer window slams shut and managers up and down the country will have to make do with what they're left with. And believe me, oodles of dealings could yet go through. Oodles.

0804: Well let me tell you this, your pulse is going to peak and trough like never before today, the greatest of all days for gossip, rumour and breaking news enthusiasts. Oh ho ho yes, it's Transfer Deadline Day and, good people of the BBC live text commentary, things are going to get hotter than a firecracker lit at both ends.

0800: Oh hello. Top of the morning to ya. How's the heart rate?
