Brazil coach sacked after Sydney shocker
Wanderly Luxemburgo
Armed guard: Luxemburgo returns home from Sydney
Wanderly Luxemburgo has been fired as coach of the Brazilian national team following the team's failure at the Olympics.

The 49-year-old had already been under fire before the Sydney 2000 debacle with Brazil lying fourth in their 10-team World Cup qualifying group.

His fate was sealed when his Olympic line-up lost 2-1 to eventual champions Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

"That was unacceptable," said the president of the Brazilian football federation Ricardo Teixeira, who pointed out that Brazil had lost to a Cameroon side that had been reduced to nine players.

Ricardo Teixeira on appointing a new coach
Teixeira did not name a successor but said the national team's technical director Candinho would step in as coach for the 2002 World Cup qualifier against Venezuala on October 8.

"A new coach will be elected after this game," he added.

Luiz Felipe Scolari is favourite to take over - but Teixeira denied rumours that he had asked the Cruzeiro coach to step into the post.

Other names being linked with the job include Carlos Alberto Parreira of Atletico-MG and Levir Cupi of Sao Paulo.

Woeful World Cup

Luxemburgo lost his job following a meeting with Teixeira in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday - but immediately before that showdown had reiterated his intention to stay in the job.

"I guarantee you one thing, I won't quit," said Luxemburgo. "I want to lead the side into the 2002 World Cup, but I will only continue with the backing of Teixeira."

Caretaker boss Candinho told Brazilian TV station Globo on Sunday that he had no intention of accepting the position if Luxemburgo had been fired controversially.

"If it was a negotiated exit and if Wanderley thinks it's a good idea, then I'll step in for that match," he added.

The OIympics ultimately brought Luxemburgo's downfall, with the pre-tournament favourites suffering an embarrassingly premature exit - but the damage had already been done.

Embarrassing Olympics

Under Luxemburgo, Brazil are trailing in their World Cup qualifying group after shock defeats to Paraguay and Chile.

Luxemburgo took over as national team boss from Mario Zagallo in 1998, shortly after Brazil lost 3-0 to France in the World Cup final.

Brazil won the America Cup - South America's championship - in 1999, but have struggled this year and he has also been dogged by off-field tax evasion allegations.
