JP Trophy final - Brentford 0-1 Carlisle

By Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport at Wembley

Peter Murphy scored the only goal as Carlisle beat Brentford in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

United made the brighter start at Wembley and went ahead when Murphy finished left-footed after a corner was headed into his path by Francois Zoko.

Brentford improved with Sam Saunders twice shooting wide and Jeffrey Schlupp hitting the post in the second half.

But Carlisle held firm, and the Bees had Toumani Diagouraga sent off for two bookings late on.

For United, their second victory in a Football League Trophy final will go some way to erasing the memory of the 4-1 defeat by Southampton at the same stage last year.

Murphy will particularly relish exorcising the demons of 2010, as it was he who gave away a needless penalty for the Saints' opening goal 12 months ago.

Indeed, it is a double celebration for Carlisle's longest-serving player, as the man who has three times been a losing finalist with United became a father on Friday.

Brentford boss Nicky Forster, leading the Bees out at Wembley only two months after taking charge, will rue the sluggish start his side made to the game and their failure to capitalise on their dominance of large parts of the second half.

That poor opening saw the Bees regularly tormented by the Cumbrians' front three of Ben Marshall, Craig Curran and Zoko in the early stages.

From Marshall's run down the left, the ball was centered to Zoko, whose header forced an acrobatic save from Brentford goalkeeper Simon Moore.

Zoko again was first to the ball from the resulting corner, heading into the path of Murphy, who controlled the ball expertly on his thigh and smashed home.

Brentford's first effort of note came when Saunders curled a free-kick past the post, and the Bees took more of a foothold in the game when the influential Marshall had to be replaced after a crunching challenge by Adam Reed, who was arguably lucky to escape with only a booking.

The men in red and white had the better of the remaining chances in the first period, Gary Alexander heading over the bar and Saunders firing high and wide after running unchallenged from his own half, but, with Carlisle looking less assured after losing Marshall and Brentford struggling to keep possession, the half petered out.

Attacking towards their own fans in the second half, the Londoners pushed hard for an equaliser and were only denied by the post when Schlupp skipped away from Lubomir Michalik and unleashed a left-foot shot that defeated Carlisle goalkeeper Adam Collin.

They again went close when Saunders whipped in a free-kick from the right, but Karleigh Osborne was unable to divert the ball goalwards when any touch would have seen it into the back of the net.

Carlisle weathered the storm, and Brentford frustrations boiled over in the shape of the two yellow cards shown to Diagouraga, for fouls on Paddy Madden and Tom Taiwo respectively, which saw him become the first man to be sent off in a Football League Trophy final.

Despite being a man down, Forster's men were still able to create a final chance to take the game into extra-time, but Leon Legge could only head wide from Gary Alexander's cross, and Brentford's third defeat in as many visits to a Trophy final was confirmed.
