Midfielder David Beckham's LA Galaxy beat Seattle Sounders 1-0 in their opening Major League Soccer match of the season on Tuesday.

Former England captain Beckham, 35, played all 90 minutes of the contest on the artificial pitch at Qwest Field.

Both sides had chances to settle the tie, with O'Brian White coming close for Sounders but the game was settled by a long-range strike from Juninho.

Galaxy are next in MLS action on Sunday, when they host New England.

Former Everton loan player Landon Donovan came close to making it 2-0 for Galaxy, but he was denied by the post.

Sounders midfielder Erik Friberg almost got on the scoresheet for the home side in front of a 36,000 strong crowd, but Galaxy held on for the win.

Ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham, who spent the MLS off-season training with Premier League side Tottenham, said after the match that he thought his side deserved the win.

"It's what we're looking for," he said. "We were away from home and up against a team with great support.

"We'll take the three points. I thought we deserved it. It was a good night.

"Intelligence comes when we're 1-0 up. We have the ball and we work hard for each other and we've worked hard leading up to the game. We have to play well and work hard and we did that tonight."

Beckham's LA Galaxy contract expires in November.

Meanwhile, MLS side Sporting Kansas City are to give NFL wide receiver Chad Ochocinco a four-day trial.

Ochocinco plays for the Cincinnati Bengals and is one of the top players in his position in the NFL.

"Due to the NFL lockout I am excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," said the 33-year-old.

Ochocinco is a big fan of football and has posted pictures of himself with Brazilian stars Ronadlinho and Kaka on the internet as well as paying a visit to Spanish club Real Madrid.

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said: "We are always searching for players who can help our team and bringing in new talent.

"We know that Chad is an exceptional athlete and loves the sport of soccer and he did play a lot when he was younger.

"We are excited to see how his skills will translate once he arrives next week and begins training with our team."
