Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has been hit by a series of withdrawals from his squad to face Wales at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday.

West Ham's Robbie Keane and Wigan player James McCarthy became the latest players to pull out on Sunday.

Keane had to come off with a calf injury with 15 minutes remaining of West Ham's game against Birmingham.

Liam Lawrence has also been ruled out with a calf problem and Leon Best is suffering from a hamstring complaint.

Bristol City's Andy Keogh and Birmingham midfielder Keith Fahey have been called into the squad.

Fahey was chosen on Friday after Keith Treacy withdrew because of a knee injury.

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is set to to report for the first time.

Clark had to withdraw from the squad for the November friendly against Norway through injury.

Trapattoni has confirmed that both Clark and Everton's Seamus Coleman will start against Wales to earn their debut caps.

He has also stated his intention to use the full complement of six substitutions allowed to him during the game.

The match in Dublin will be used as preparation for the resumption of the Republic's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign against Macedonia in March.

Trapattoni is looking forward to the game against Wales, his side's first in the Carling Nations Cup.

"This competition provides our players with familiar and tough opponents, and the added competitive edge to the tournament is the perfect preparation for the Euro qualifying campaign," he said.

Republic of Ireland squad: Given (Man City), Westwood (Coventry), O'Shea (Man Utd), Clark (Villa), Coleman (Everton), Dunne (Villa), St Ledger (Preston), Kelly (Fulham), O'Dea (Celtic), Wilson (Stoke), Gibson (Man Utd), Whelan (Stoke), Green (Derby), Fahey (Birmingham), Duff (Fulham), Walters (Stoke), Doyle (Wolves), Long (Reading), Keogh (Bristol City).
