Cup - Ross County 0-0 Dundee Utd

Holders Dundee United beat Ross County on penalties to reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested during a dismal first half of the replay at Victoria Park.

United's Jon Daly and David Goodwillie and County's Andrew Barrowman and Martin Scott had efforts saved after the interval and extra-time ensued.

Scott Morrison had his spot-kick saved by United keeper Steve Banks to end County's involvement in the tournament.

The veteran Banks, deputising for the injured Dusan Pernis, was the star man for United, also keeping out an effort from Iain Vigurs during the shoot-out and making a string of splendid stops.

First Division County must be sick of the sight of United, having lost to them in last season's final and exiting this term's Co-operative Insurance Cup at the hands of Peter Houston's side.

And the Dingwall side can feel especially aggrieved this time after playing much the better football in the second half.

The first 45 minutes were dreadful and passed with neither goalkeeper called on to dirty their gloves.

County were almost in on the stroke of half time when Martin Scott threaded the ball through to Steven Craig but he was upended on the edge of the penalty box and nothing came of Marc Corcoran's free kick.

The home side forced a corner at the start of the second half and centre back Gary Kenneth headed over his own crossbar to avert a goal scoring opportunity.

County goalkeeper Michael McGovern then stopped headers from United strikers Daly and Goodwillie.

Barrowman came close to breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute when he met a Richard Brittain corner kick but the ball was inadvertently knocked off the line by team-mate Craig.

Scott's diagonal ball then sent Barrowman clear but Banks raced from his line to block impressively.

Banks was busy again when he managed to scramble away a long-range effort from Morrison.

Brittain was next up with a blistering shot that Banks managed to push onto the crossbar and, a minute later, the United keeper produced more heroics with another wonder save from Scott which again deflected onto the woodwork.

Extra time proved cagey with few chances but the best opportunity again fell the way of the Staggies, with Scott sweeping over the crossbar after connecting with a cut back from substitute Vigurs.

David Robertson missed the first penalty of the shoot-out but United won through, with Goodwillie converting the crucial spot-kick.
