Sunderland striker Darren Bent has been named as the North East Sports Writers' Player of the Year for 2010.

Bent, 26, was an instant hit in his first season on Wearside, scoring 25 goals in 40 games after a £10m move from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2009.

Runners-up were the Newcastle United duo of Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll, who won the Young Player prize.

Carroll, 21, scored 19 goals in 42 games as the Magpies won the Championship title last season.

Bent's form has continued this season, netting 10 goals in 16 appearances for club and country this term.

The England international has established himself in Fabio Capello's plans, scoring his first international goal against Switzerland in September.

Nolan and Carroll have been regular fixtures in a Newcastle side that have risen to 11th in the Premier League since winning promotion last season.

Both scored in the 5-1 defeat of rivals Sunderland in October, while Carroll made his England senior bow in November's 2-0 friendly defeat by France at Wembley.

The winners will receive their prizes at Durham's Ramside Hall Hotel this Sunday (12 December).
