Sheff Wed   4 - 1   Hartlepool

Highlights - Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 Hartlepool

Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 Hartlepool

Sheffield Wednesday cruised into the northern area semi-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to Neil Mellor's hat-trick against Hartlepool.

Mellor got his first with a curling shot before he got on the end of Gary Teale's cross to double the lead.

Fabian Yantorno pulled one back with a fabulous 20-yard shot but Mellor sealed his treble from the spot after he was fouled by Hartlepool's Gary Liddle.

Teale wrapped it up for Wednesday by lobbing Jake Kean before the hour mark.

It was just desserts for the Owls as they dominated from the beginning and they took their foot off the accelerator for the last half an hour.

That allowed Hartlepool several decent chances to score, but Armann Bjornsson and Antony Sweeney both headed wide from close-range while Nicky Weaver made saves from Yantorno and Andy Monkhouse.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"We started the game extremely well I think we played very well.

"We started the second half with a makeshift back four but we nearly got caught out a couple of times.

"We finished the game very comfortably."

Hartlepool United caretaker boss Mick Wadsworth told BBC Tees:
"It didn't reflect the chances each team had, it didn't reflect the possession, particularly in the second half, but what it did reflect was a lack of ruthlessness, steel, toughness, aggressiveness, intelligence, call it what you will.

"The difference was that in that department we were sadly lacking today.

"Goals two, three and four were very easily preventable. The first goal was nice play - like Fabian Yantorno's, it's a great shot.

"The second goal was very poor, we had enough men to deal with it and a dopey full-back who didn't do his job properly and defend the far post. We gifted the game to Sheffield Wednesday."
