Magpies boss Robson wins award
Robson has turned Newcastle round in the last year
Robson has turned Newcastle round in the last year
Newcastle United manager Bobby Robson has been named this season's first Carling Manager of the Month.

Robson was handed the August award for guiding the Magpies to the top of the Premiership.

Newcastle lost their opening game of the season when they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But they have bounced back from that defeat to record three successive victories, over Derby, Tottenham and Coventry.

Robson took over at St James's Park almost a year ago, with Newcastle heading for relegation.

Sprees

Ruud Gullit quit after United had recorded five defeats and one draw in their opening games last season.

Young Leeds striker Alan Smith has been named Player of the Month after his goal sprees against Everton and Middlesbrough.

North of the border, Celtic's Martin O'Neill was the recipient of the Bell's Manager of the Month award.
