Paulo Bento has been appointed as successor to the sacked Carlos Queiroz as Portugal coach.

Bento, 41, earned 35 caps for Portugal during his playing career and has signed a contract through to Euro 2012.

He managed Sporting Lisbon between 2005 and 2009 and takes over with Portugal having picked up one point from two Euro 2012 qualifiers under Queiroz.

Bento's first game will be another qualifier against Denmark on 8 October before playing Iceland four days later.

Real Madrid's Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho had been linked with taking temporary charge of team for the next month's games but has ruled out such a possibility.

Former defensive midfielder Bento led Sporting to two Portuguese Cup titles, four consecutive second-place league finishes and the last 16 in the Champions League in 2009.

However, he quit the club in November 2009 after Sporting failed to win a league game in two months.
