France beat Spain to win European Under-19 title

France came from behind to beat a strongly fancied Spain 2-1 and seal the European Under-19 championship in Caen.

Spain were undefeated coming into the final, having ended England's hopes in the semis, and went 1-0 up when Rodrigo scored from Daniel Pacheco's pass.

But France came through a first half of soaking up relentless pressure to equalise through Arsenal's Gilles Sunu.

Chelsea's Gael Kakuta then created an 85th-minute winner when he squared to Alexandre Lacazette, who slotted home.

The victory will provide some good cheer for France after a dismal World Cup campaign in which they went out at the group stage and suffered from discord in their camp.

And it makes up for a defeat two years ago in the under-17 tournament when eleven of the 22 players on show took part in a 4-0 victory for Spain.

The defeat here for the Spanish was hard to take as they dominated possession for long periods but were caught out on the break.

Spain also lost to England at European Under-17 Championship earlier in 2010.
