Southampton hammered Carlisle to win the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final at Wembley and collect their first domestic silverware since 1976.
Saints took the lead through Rickie Lambert's penalty after Peter Murphy needlessly handled.
Adam Lallana doubled the advantage just before half-time when he headed in from Michail Antonio's long throw.
The third came just after the break when Papa Waigo was able to head into an unguarded net after a parry from goalkeeper Adam Collin, with Antonio notching the fourth with a fine low shot from the edge of the box.
Substitute Gary Madine headed home Ian Harte's free-kick late on to provide Carlisle meagre consolation.
The win gives some long-awaited cheer to Southampton fans who saw their side relegated from the Premier League in 2005, drop from the Championship last season and then begin this term with a 10-point deduction as a result of their financial troubles.
But their loyalty has shown no sign of fading, as 44,000 travelled from the south coast to see their side lift the trophy at the first time of asking and in their first appearance at the new Wembley.
Carlisle, appearing in this final for the fifth time, will be left to rue the defensive mistakes that ultimately turned their day out into something of an embarrassing thrashing.
Indeed it was the Cumbrians who made the brighter start, thanks largely to the endeavour of veteran Graham Kavanagh in his role just behind lone striker Scott Dobie.
But it did not take long for Saints to stamp their authority on the game. Firstly, Antonio controlled the ball on the half-way line and turned towards goal, proceeding unchallenged to the edge of the box from where his deft lob sailed wide.
Soon after, Alan Pardew's side took the lead from the spot when Murphy inexplicably handled above his head after a cross from Antonio on the right wing. Lambert stepped up and slotted home to the left of Adam Collin for his 32nd goal of the season.
After going behind United looked in danger of being overwhelmed, with Lallana twice getting on the end of flick-ons in the box, only to fire both his shots straight at Collin.
Murphy, after the indiscretion of giving the penalty, then gave the ball away to Papa Waigo, whose cross-field pass fell to Antonio, who again could only shoot at the goalkeeper.
But this was to provide the catalyst for a Carlisle revival. A counter-attack produced a corner which fell to Matty Robson, and his cross was headed on to the top of the bar by former Republic of Ireland international Harte.
A period of pressure from the team in blue followed, with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson collecting the ball from a throw-in, then shooting on the turn only to see his effort drop on to the roof of the net.
Lallana had gone close twice before scoring Southampton's second
However, it was Saints who were to strike the killer blow before half-time. Antonio's Rory Delap-esque long throw-in from the right was flicked on by Lambert into the path of Lallana, and he headed into the net unchallenged to give Pardew's side a two-goal advantage at the break and make Carlisle's job even harder.
If United manager Greg Abbott's half-time team talk was to ask his side for a better performance at the back, it was forgotten as soon as the teams resumed battle as Saints stretched their lead.
Lambert's burst down the left resulted in an innocuous-looking ball into the box, but Evan Horwood failed to clear at the far post.
Horwood was pick-pocketed by Antonio, whose shot was beaten into the path of Papa Waigo, and he had the simple task of nodding into the empty net.
Adam Clayton burst through the Southampton defence and shot wide to seemingly offer evidence of the fight left inside United, but their defensive frailties remained and were perfectly highlighted when Collin nearly punched into his own net from a free-kick taken just inside the Carlisle half.
Those frailties appeared again to allow Saints to score their fourth just before the hour mark. Another long free-kick was not dealt with, with Antonio pouncing on the loose ball to fire in a smart left-footed finish low past Collin into the corner of the net from the edge of the area.
With the spectacle effectively over, the game meandered to a finish as Saints took their foot off the gas.
Carlisle substitute Joe Anyinsah failed to hit the target from close range, but the United fans were given something to cheer about when fellow replacement Madine headed in his goal seven minutes from time.
The Cumbrians will have to take solace in the £350,000 worth of gate receipts that each side received for making it to Wembley.
Given their recent history, the money will also come in handy for Southampton, who will see this trophy as another step on their long road to redemption.
