Rangers   1 - 0   St Mirren

Rangers striker Kris Boyd
Boyd's 22nd goal of the season secured Rangers' passage to the quarter-finals

By Andy Campbell

A late goal by Kris Boyd secured a narrow Scottish Cup replay victory for Rangers against St Mirren.

Steven Naismith and Steven Davis came close to scoring for the home side during the first half.

Both keepers were called into action after the break with Paul Gallacher denying Boyd and Billy Mehmet's effort foiled by Rangers' Allan McGregor.

But the deadlock was broken four minutes from the end when Boyd got in behind the Saints defence to finish.

Having drawn 0-0 in Paisley earlier in the month, these sides were battling for the right to face Dundee United in the quarter-finals.

Early shots came in from Davis and St Mirren's Steven Thomson but neither posed much of a threat to their respective targets.

However, the home side carved out a clear-cut opening in the eighth minute when Boyd's reverse pass put Naismith in on the St Mirren goal only for the forward to drag his shot wide of the far post.

At the other end, Michael Higdon's header from Andy Dorman's corner looped over the crossbar.

Rangers had the bulk of play for the remainder of the first half but were becoming increasingly frustrated by Saints' well-organised defensive unit.

Naismith's controlled volley was collected by Gallacher before Davis flashed a vicious drive over from 20 yards.

Boyd had the ball in the net early in the second half but the offside flag had been raised against the Rangers striker.

The Ibrox side's top scorer then drew a save from Gallacher with a well-struck volley from the edge of the box.

Another Higdon header went over before the striker was inches away from connecting with Dorman's teasing centre.

The Buddies were growing in confidence and a marauding run by Mehmet ended with the forward's shot being smothered by McGregor.

Kenny Miller replaced Nacho Novo as Rangers sought a change in fortunes in attack while Saints' Stephen O'Donnell came on for the injured Jack Ross.

Davis burst into the box and, in his haste, O'Donnell diverted the ball back towards his own goal but Gallacher was alert enough to clear.

But just when it looked like the match was heading for extra-time, Boyd pounced.

Steven Smith's long ball was flicked on by the head of Kirk Broadfoot and Boyd held off the challenge of John Potter to lift a shot beyond Gallacher.

Rangers went in search of a second, Miller firing wide in a break-away attack.

Gallacher then dived to his right to palm away a powerful Naismith drive as the Ibrox side finished strongly.

The last eight clash between Rangers and United is scheduled to take place on Saturday 13 March.
