St Johnstone   0 - 1   Dundee Utd

David Goodwillie
David Goodwillie opened the scoring for United on the stroke of half-time

By Martin Conaghan

Dundee United booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Active Nation Scottish Cup with a slim victory away to St Johnstone.

David Goodwillie struck the only goal of the tie off the underside of the bar on the stroke of half-time.

Peter MacDonald almost levelled in the second-half, but watched as his shot was cleared off the line.

David Robertson could have settled the tie in the injury time, but blasted his long-range shot off the crossbar.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes handed a debut to new signing Michael Duberry, with on-loan Bolton youngster Mark Connolly a place on the bench.

Dundee United manager Peter Houston was again without defender Andy Webster through injury, with Sean Dillon handed a start in place of Michael Kovacevic.

Goodwillie put Saints keeper Graeme Smith to the test inside the opening minutes after working along the goal line and firing in from a narrow angle.

Filipe Morais sent in a long-range free-kick for St Johnstone in the 12th minute that sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Moments later, Goodwillie flashed in another tricky ball from the edge of the six-yard box that Smith managed to flap away.

St Johnstone claimed for a penalty after Murray Davidson piled into the Dundee United box and appeared to be infringed, but referee Craig Thomson was .

Danny Swanson almost opened the scoring for United in the 20th minute when he leapt above the Saints defence and powered down a header that Smith struggled to contain.

Another Goodwillie strike from inside the danger area drifted over the top as the 30-minute mark approached, but St Johnstone remained composed and looked lively on the break.

Danny Grainger's 20-yard free-kick forced United keeper Dusan Pernis into a save in the build-up to half-time, then Morais blasted a decent ball over the bar following a goalmouth scramble.

Goodwillie latched on to a loose ball following a goalmouth scramble and slammed the ball off the underside of the bar to open the scoring for Dundee United on the stroke of half-time, although, there appeared to be a foul on keeper Smith beforehand.

On the other side of the half-time interval, Prince Buaben latched on to a careless clearance and looked certain to double United's tally, were it not for the quick reflexes of Smith in the Saints goal.

Moments later, MacDonald beat the offside trap to round Pernis and shoot for goal, but Paul Dixon had tracked back and cleared the ball off the line.

Morais worked the ball on to his left foot on the edge of the United box on the hour mark and sent his shot swerving over the bar.

Conway tested smith with a shot from 18 yards, but the former Rangers keeper dived to gather.

United's defence barely put a foot wrong in the whole match, despite St Johnstone's best efforts, with striker Kenny Deuchar providing an aerial threat for the home side.

Pernis took a risk to leave his box and make a clearance, giving St Johnstone an opening, but the hosts failed to make anything of the opportunity.

less than a minute later, sub Damian Casalinuovo outran the Saints defence and teed up a powerful shot that ended up sailing over the bar.

The ref ordered Dixon to seek treatment in the dying minutes after badly injuring his ankle and the former Dundee man played no further part in the game.

Robertson turned on the edge of the penalty area as the seconds ticket out and sent in a powerful drive, but watched his shot rebound off the crossbar.

Paul Sheerin leapt above the United defence right at the death to deliver a header that inched over to end St Johnstone's cup run for another season.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes:
"We're obviously a bit flat. There was a slight hangover from the game on Wednesday night, with a few boys who were a bit tired.

"We were not at our best, and we have to be at our best - but we didn't have the spark to our play that we normally have.

"We didn't have any sustained play, and I thought United were the better team.

"They played sharper, with more intensity, and they deserved their win.

"We shouldn't lose goals the way we did, but I felt there was a challenge on my keeper from Darren Dods that the referee should have seen, but he didn't.

"But on balance, I thought United were the better team."

Dundee United manager Peter Houston:
"The players were magnificent and worked very hard.

"In the first half, we should have had three or four goals.

"It was a thoroughly deserved victory, in my opinion.

"We lost seven goals in two games, so we needed to tighten up at the back - and I thought our back four were outstanding.

"We tried to pass the ball, get it wide and get in behind them - all of the kind of things that excite the fans.

"We gave them a decent performance that they can go home happy with - we're through to the last eight."
