Setanta demise hurt FA - Triesman

Football Association chairman Lord Triesman says the collapse of Setanta has hindered the progress of the National Football Centre at Burton.

The Irish broadcaster went into administration in June this year, hindering FA plans to fund a headquarters for football development.

England's away World Cup qualifiers and FA Cup games were screened by Setanta.

"Everyone knows that Setanta has made a significant difference to the money available to the FA," said Triesman.

Setanta failed to make a number of payments to sporting organisations, including the Scottish Premier League.

It also had a contract with the FA to broadcast England's home friendly matches, England Under-21 games and the FA Community Shield.

Triesman, speaking at a Leaders in Football conference at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground, added: "I'm very eager to see Burton happen.

"If I told you Setanta going bankrupt had minimal influence on what we can do and afford on capital projects, nobody would believe me for a second.

"It has had a very big impact and we are working hard to get alternative broadcast partners in particular for the FA Cup which is a key property.

"We need the whole flow of the income to see our programmes through. We're going to try to get back to that point."
