Burnley   2 - 1   Birmingham

Burnley trio David Nugent (left), Seven Fletcher (centre) and Andre Bikey celebrate the latter's goal against Birmingham

Burnley maintained their 100% home record in the Premier League with a victory over Birmingham at Turf Moor.

Lee Bowyer missed a glorious chance from point-blank range for the Blues before they fell behind when Steven Fletcher drove home an 18-yard shot.

Makeshift midfielder Andre Bikey played a neat one-two with David Nugent before slotting in Burnley's second.

Birmingham rarely troubled Burnley but Sebastian Larsson curled in a free-kick for them to earn a late consolation.

These two promoted sides drew 1-1 both times when they met last season and the familiarity between the pair made for a tight game until Fletcher's first Premier League goal of the season.

The three points only reinforced Burnley's Jekyll and Hyde nature so far this season with Owen Coyle's side now having won their four league games at home and losing their four away matches.

606: DEBATE

And, while leaking goals and being outplayed on their travels, they have taken the prized scalps of Manchester United and Everton with their Turf Moor form.

They were transformed to the more secure and positive thinking side back on their Lancashire territory, but had initially found the defensive 4-5-1 formation of a miserly Birmingham difficult to play through.

The first shot on target took nearly half an hour to materialise when Clarets striker Nugent let a Wade Elliott pass roll across him before letting fly with a well-struck shot that was saved by Joe Hart.

Blues forward Garry O'Connor was an isolated presence in attack for his side but they should have scored through Bowyer.

The midfielder was lurking at the far post and, instead of side-footing in Roger Johnson's shot across goal, the ball hit his heel and was inadvertently cleared for Burnley.

Coyle delighted with Fletcher goal

Larsson also had a gilt-edged chance for the visitors after Bikey gave the ball away for Burnley only for the Blues' substitute to shoot over.

The misses were punished when Burnley's record signing Fletcher ran on to a Tyrone Mears pass and ended a counter-attack by driving a left-foot shot in from the edge of the area.

Hart did not cover himself in glory by diving too early and seeing the strike go in off his legs.

Fletcher and Burnley were buoyed by the goal and the Scotland striker almost got a second only to chest down a cross and see his scuffed shot come back off the post.

Bikey made no such mistake when he fended off a challenge in midfield, surged towards goal, played a one-two with Nugent and powered in an angled shot.

McLeish bemoans 'worst' performance

Mears had a free-kick tipped over and Bikey put a free header high as Burnley ended up convincing winners, despite Larsson scoring with virtually the last kick of the game.

The visitors never looked like getting back into the game as Blues boss Alex McLeish suffered a defeat at the hands of Coyle - the man he recommended for the Burnley job.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle:
"We have good players and a good team and are deserving of every point (at home).

"It was an outstanding performance and we should have won by more. Birmingham did not venture forward that much.

"It's been a horrible week because of injuries but the players again showed their character."

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish:
"I was disappointed with the second-half showing.

"First half there was nothing in it, we had a couple of little sniffs and it would be good if we could score an early goal to build on.

"The disappointing thing was our reaction (to going behind) and I would say that is the worst we have played so far this season."
