Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi and caretaker manager Chris Hughton win the Championship player and manager of the month awards for August.

Ameobi, 27, has scored four goals this season, including a hat-trick against Reading, for the Magpies.

Former Republic of Ireland assistant Hughton has enjoyed a fantastic start to the season with four wins and a draw from their opening five games.

The awards cap a fine month for United, who are unbeaten in the league.

Ameobi pipped fellow strikers Nicky Maynard of Bristol City and Cardiff's Michael Chopra, as well as Derby defender Miles Addison to the award.

Charlton midfielder Lloyd Sam won the League One award, with the League Two prize going to Barnet's Ismail Yakubu.

Sam was chosen ahead of three League One strikers - Gillingham's Simeon Jackson, Huddersfield's Jordan Rhodes and Leeds' Jermaine Beckford.

Meanwhile, also shortlisted for the League Two award were Bournemouth goalkeeper Shwan Jalal, Dagenham & Redbridge winger Danny Green and Rotherham striker Adam Le Fondre.

Hughton shrugged of competition from Preston North End's Alan Irvine, Kevin Blackwell of Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion's Roberto Di Matteo.

Phil Parkinson won the League One award for Charlton Athletic, with the League Two prize going to Dagenham & Redbridge's John Still.

Parkinson was chosen ahead of Brentford's Andy Scott, Simon Grayson of Leeds United and Milton Keynes Dons' Paul Ince.

Meanwhile, also shortlisted for the League Two manager award were Ian Hendon of Barnet, Bournemouth's Eddie Howe and Mark Robins (formerly of Rotherham United, now at Barnsley).
