Rangers and Island striker Ross Allen has won two awards at the Guernsey Football Association Awards.

The prolific forward won player of the year and players' player of the year after a fine season for his club and for the Senior Islands Men's team.

Allen told BBC Radio Guernsey it is flattering to be recognised by his fellow players.

"At the end of the day you could be a great footballer but lack character which other players respect," he said.

"It's a great honour to get that respect from your peers."

Rangers finished fourth in the Guernsey Football League last season with Allen scoring many vital goals for the club.

"A lot of things have gone right this season," Allen added. "And the awards are great for Rangers as well because we're a club that doesn't always get recognition."

Northerners AC coach Ross Cameron, won coach of the year, while Sam Murray from Rovers was voted best youth player and Sylvans Jo McKenzie, best women's player.

Allen put his success at the awards down to hard work on his physical strength.

"If you've got the talent you're halfway there, but you need to be super-fit to play this game at a certain level," he said.

With the Island Games in Aland starting at the end of June, the training for Guernsey's Senior Men's team is underway.

Allen said: "The squad is looking really good, we're getting really competitive in training and there's a bit of rivalry as well.

"I can't wait because it's going to be my first Island Games and a gold medal would really cap it off," he added.
