Top two maintain title challenge

Football

Peel and Douglas High School Old Boys both maintained their title challenge with wins in the Isle of Man Premier League on Saturday.

Peel beat struggling Ayre United 3-1 at the Andreas Sports Field to stay three points clear of Old Boys.

The sides were tied 1-1 at half time before the westerners snatched victory with two late strikes.

Meanwhile Old Boys remained in second place after a fine 3-1 home victory over Laxey.

Peel's goals came courtesy of Daniel Lace, Lee Gale and Johnny Myers with Martin Torr on target for Ayre.

Meanwhile Callum Stewart, Liam Buckley and Sean Gavin sealed Old Boys' win by half time, Johnny Callow scored a second-half consolation for the Miners.

The shock of the day came as Union Mills held St Georges 1-1 at Garey Mooar.

Geordies' Stuart Bell-Scott equalised an early Richard Cannell strike but the champions could not manage a winner.

Elsewhere Michael beat Colby 2-0 at Glen Road, Rushen beat Corinthians 3-1 at Nobles Park and Gymnasium took all three points in a 2-1 home triumph over Ramsey.
