Di Stefano deal intensifies rivalry
As representatives of two of Spain's major regions, Barcelona (Catalonia) and Real Madrid (Castile) have always been rivals.
In the early 1950s this intensified over the protracted, and still disputed, transfer of the legendary striker Alfredo di Stefano.
Di Stefano agreed to join Barca only to sign for Real instead. The reasons remain unclear - Barca say they were put under pressure by Spanish dictator General Franco's regime, but Real say Barca's decision was voluntary.
The rest is history as two-time Ballon d'Or winner Di Stefano led Real to five European Cups and eight league titles.
