The 1980s Ballon d'Or winners
With World Cup greats Diego Maradona and Zico ineligible, the decade saw European Championship performances prove the key to deciding the winner
West Germany's Karl-Heinze Rummenigge (top right) won the Euros and Ballon D'Or in 1980 before retaining the individual award in 1981.
France legend Michael Platini (top left) did the double in 1984, and also added the Golden Ball in 1983 and 1985.
Dutch striker Marco van Basten sealed his double in 1988, retaining the Ballon D'Or a year later, with team-mate Ruud Gullit earlier triumphing in 1987.
