The 1970s Ballon d'Or winners
Clockwise from top left: Johan Cruyff; Franz Beckenbauer; Allan Simonsen; Oleg Blokhin; Gerd Muller

Despite English teams' success in Europe, their players missed out on individual recognition in the 1970s.

It allowed two football icons to set new standards with Dutch great Johan Cruyff winning in 1971, 1973 and 1974 and German maestro Franz Beckenbauer triumphing in 1972 and 1976.

(Bottom, left to right) West Germany's Gerd Muller, won in 1970 for his 10 World Cup finals goals, USSR striker Oleg Blokhin led the way in 1975 and Denmark's Allan Simonsen lifted the 1977 trophy.

1978 and 1979 belonged to Keegan - just after he left Liverpool for Hamburg.
