Madeira celebrate winning the inaugural small nations tournament

Madeira won the first ever small nations football tournament after beating the hosts Jersey 2-0 in the final at Springfield on Sunday.

Both sides had beaten Gibraltar in the previous two days to set up the winner-takes-all final game.

Mario Teixiera opened the scoring after eight minutes before Luis Aurelio's goal made it 2-0 with 20 minutes to go.

Jersey's best chance came from Barry Beatson just before half time but it was ruled out for offside.

Jersey manager Dave Kennedy told BBC Radio Jersey: "It's been a great weekend for Jersey football.

"Madeira have rightly won because they were the best team. Technically they were outstanding and a lot fitter."

The match was played in front of around 1,000 fans, many of them ex-patriot Madeirans supporting their side.

"As far as a weekend and raising the profile of Jersey football it's been an absolutely fantastic event," said Kennedy.

Jersey set up their showdown with the Madeirans by coming from behind to beat Island Games rivals Gibraltar 2-1.

Gibraltar led through a 31st minute Aaron Asquez goal.

Jersey did not equalise until the 70th minute when Jack Cannon fired home a penalty after Dave le Roux had been bundled over in the box.

Gibraltar were reduced to 10 men shortly after when Brendan Perez got a second booking and Jersey took advantage with Beatson getting the winner late on.

The Gibraltarians were beaten 2-0 by Madeira on Friday night after Mario-Rondon Fernandez scored twice for the Madeirans.
