0115: Well, I think that's an apt moment on which to draw a line, this transfer deadline day. It's been a day of thrills and spills, audacious bids, monumental swoops and world-class signings. But away from your texts and messageboard missives, it's been a little disappointing if we're honest.

Somehow, however, I can't imagine anything other than all of us being here for exactly the same sort of ride come the end of August. It's because we're football fans and we love it - this is who we are, what we do.

You lot have been immense. Enjoy any new players you've bagged and lots of luck for the rest of the season.

Cheers, Stevo (and Fletch).

0113: "Well if nothing else, tonight I learned I could refresh using F5."
Damian, Rochdale, via text

0109: I fogot to tell you Graham Kavanagh has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of the season from Sunderland.

0105: "I am gonna keep pressing the F5 button on my laptop until I see Liverpool have bought David Villa!"
Luke, Shoreham by sea, via text

Hahaha. Mate, you're in for an even longer night than me! Give it up pal, I reckon there will be a couple of transfers that don't get announced until the morning - remember Lassana Diarra from Chelsea to Arsenal? - but there won't be much more tonight. Today will not live long in the memory, that's for sure.

0100: I'm going to stay for another 15 minutes, just in case. After that, you're on your own guys and girls - I need to bag some zzzzzzzzzzzzz's.

One of the most protracted moves of the day has finally been confirmed and Jermain Defoe completes his switch to Pompey from Spurs, on the day he was left out of the England squad by Fabio Capello. We don't know the fee, but it's a "long-term" deal.

0048: "Marmite, love or hate?"
Nish, via text

Hate hate hate hate hate. Utterly disgusting.

0045: "Give us a song about Man City breaking into the top four this season!"
Anonymous, via text

"I believe in miracles..." C'mon, what is this - deadline day online karaoke?!

0042: "Manager Nabil Hassan has moved to quash rumours that Jon Stevenson has moved clubs. He is happy playing for Jomec."
Rich Eadie, via text

0040: "Jonny Jonny give us a song!"
From George in Alexandria, via text

Er... "I'm bored... I don't know what to do... I'm bored... I don't have any money" etc etc etc.

We can now officially confirm that 19-year-old Ecuadorian striker Felipe Caicedo has joined the Sven-Goran Eriksson revolution for a fee of about 5m from FC Basel.

0030: Now then. 606 has closed after an unbelievable number of comments - thank you so much for all your efforts today in keeping everyone entertained. However, you can still text in on 81111 - I'll be here for another half an hour, so don't leave me on my own just yet.

0029: "What's happened to the Benjani-City move? Harewood defo going to Forest on loan and Nigel Clough is going to be their new assistant manager, a youth player/mate has told me."
given-thebest-sam on 606

Oh my days. Can I change my champagne moment?

0025: "Strong rumours, yet to be announced, that Jonathan Stevenson has signed for my Sunday League team minutes before the deadline."
James in Southport, via text

I can neither confirm nor deny that comment. Suffice to say, if I am on the move, the fee will remain undisclosed. Mostly out of embarrassment to my good self, in all fairness.

0023: Our BBC source at Tottenham says the Jermain Defoe move to Portsmouth is now 99% a done deal, just waiting for the official confirmation now.

0021: "When someone finds something interesting, do we text to Jon, Jonny or Jonathan?"
Luke, via text

Honestly, whatever you like pal. I've been doing this for more than eight hours now and I can't actually see anymore. Whoever you are, get the beers in son.

0019: "Good job that transfer window is closed now, Jon. I bet the Geordies were getting cold with that empty breeze blowing through all night."
Paul from Herts, via text

0017: Stoke City have swooped in a massive last-gasp fashion to sign Sheffield Wednesday's talented young midfielder Glenn Whelan for 500,000.

0015: I'm sorry. I feel culpable.

0013: "To be announced in next five minutes, David Bentley has joined Newcastle for 5m with James Milner going the other way, heard it from a close source inside St James' Park."
taylor4452 on 606

0010: "Jonathan, if you're not getting much out of the window have you tried closing it down, restarting and then opening it again?"
Jez, via text

I might get some hammer for this, but are you my technical support??

0008: "Is it wrong that the highlight of my transfer day was you telling us that you eating a pizza was not rumour but fact?"

Nope, not wrong at all. Anyone else got a champagne moment? Mine was when someone said they'd seen Lars Bohinen and Bryan Roy at the City Ground. I wish it was 1995!

0003: Rudi Skacel has joined Hertha Berlin on loan until the end of the season from Southampton.

0002: "Just tried to throw myself out of the transfer window, but bounced back."
3bones3 on 606

0001: But don't despair - I'm sure your team has signed someone, they just haven't had time/been bothered to tell you about it yet. Or if they haven't, come up with the old party line that the current squad is good enough to stay up/go up/qualify for Europe/stay in mid-table mediocrity.

2357: "Come on Jon. Why have you not revealed the massive signings that Forest are obviously making at this very minute? I feel let down."
Scotty in Tadcaster, via text

I just checked out a well-known Forest blog and they've got an eye on this page for updates too. People, I'm trying really hard. I'd bend some spoons if I thought it would help. Latest mentions are Sharp, Eastwood and McLean. Oh, and Marlon Harewood!

2355: Remember, I'm here for the next 65 minutes. I can certainly try my hand at counselling as that's probably what you guys will need me for. I might need some myself at this rate.

2352: "David Bentley is at Anfield as we speak, as is David Villa."
Neil, via text

2349: "Aston Villa are preparing a late 3m bid for Sean Scannell from Palace, I hope not though."
Darren Goodwin, via text

2345: "Pompey are paying about 9m for Defoe I'm going to say."
CheeseyJoeTorres on 606

Don't you mean undisclosed fee?

2341: George Elokobi signs for Wolves from Colchester for an undisclosed fee.

2339: "Carsten Jancker deal to Southampton is apparently being ratified at the moment, whatever that means."
Saint_Stevo on 606

Saint Stevo? Awesome - is that me in 2,000 years' time? Can't believe I've just put myself into this live - though I'll almost certainly have forgotton by the time I travel back in time and send the message.

2335: "My sources tell me Stewart Downing has just signed for Tottenham, four-year deal for 9.5m, possibly increasing to 12m."
Anonymous, via text

Where would we be without Spurs on a day like today? I'm flabbergasted Newcastle haven't swooped yet - surely King Kev is brokering some massive last-gasp deals as we speak...

2333: Pearlo's back with more Spurs chat: "Teemu Tainio to Birmingham and Pascal Chimbonda to Newcastle, as well as Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth, will follow Anthony Gardner and Paul Stalteri out of White Hart Lane."

Boro finally get their man as they complete the signing of Heerenveen's Brazilian striker Afonso Alves. They say it breaks their transfer record, but they won't officially say what it is. BBC Sport understands it is in the region of 12m. Now that is a proper fee for deadline day. Bullseye.

2322: "Jonathan I promise, Stephen Hunt is definitely having a medical at the Stadium of Light, he is signing on a undisclosed fee for three-and-a-half years."

I was prepared to believe you as you promised. But then you went and ruined it by giving me the whole undisclosed fee chat. Heartbreaker.

2321: OK enough of the Anfield comments - I'm only trying to liven up proceedings!

2319: "Mascherano will not sign for Liverpool simply because he is here in Barcelona signing a six-year deal."
From Romero, via text

2316: "Everton repotedly have got Sidwell and he is currently undergoing medical."
jayjayeverton on 606

Heard lots of that particular chat too. Can massively see that happening - but aren't Chelsea a bit short of numbers at the minute?

2314: Lots and lots of texts and messages suggesting that under-fire Liverpool winger Harry Kewell is poised to sign for Championship outfit Hull City.

2310: West Brom have struck a deal to sign Livingston forward Graham Dorrans at the end of the season. Not exactly Box Office, but beggars can't be choosers now can they?

2309: My brother just phoned, pretty much hammered. He asked me if Forest had signed anyone. I told him we hadn't. I'm worried he's not even going to make it home, now. The clown.

2307: "My team just lost 9-8 in a 5-a-side game in the last minute when we were winning 7-2 and now Newcastle haven't signed anyone! Can it get any worse Jonathan?"
Anonymous, via text

Er, re-sign Titus Bramble?

2301: "Tottenham have Antonio Cassano lined up to replace Jermain Defoe."
djunitedred on 606

2300: We have one hour left, people. Plus injury time, if you know what I mean. It's officially squeaky-bum time.

Filippo Mancini, 17, son of Inter coach Roberto, has completed his loan move to the City of Manchester Stadium.

2254: "I've just heard from my mate who lives in Anfield and he said Quaresma is not there. However, he did say that he thinks he saw Pablo Aimar."
bigbrenriley on 606

Good work. But I'm intrigued to know, how do you manage to buy/rent a place IN Anfield? Sounds tremendous - does it come with a box?

2250: "Rumour mill going haywire up here that Peter Crouch is on his way to Toon."
Craig Cornforth, Newcastle, via text

2244: "I'm terrified Jonathan - Newcastle have only got about 13 players - and that includes Ameobi, Carr and Geremi. And we've let Rozenhal go! I'm seriously quite worried."
anthonywright on 606

2242: "Just walked past the City Ground - I saw Marlon Harewood go into reception with Calderwood by his side."
Fletch, Notts, via text

It's official - I'm excited again.

2241: "I think the lack of anything going on at Anfield shows up how ambitious our new owners are... pathetic. It's embarrassing what has happened to our great club that is Liverpool."
NiallSF on 606

2239: "Strong possibility of Javier Saviola on loan to Spurs, which would explain the about turn on letting Defoe go."
Paxton 53, via text

2232: I must admit, I'm a bit nervous about my club (Forest) not signing anyone now. Does anyone else think their team's season is in real trouble if they don't swoop in the next 88 minutes?

2229: Reading striker Simon Cox joins Swindon on a two-and-a-half year deal.

2228: Championship side Barnsley have swooped in a big way, wrapping up the permanent signing of 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder Anderson de Silva from Everton and also taking defender Lewin Nyatanga, 19, on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move.

2224: "Outside Anfield, I can confirm Quaresma rumour to be true, if that wasn't him leaving he's got a cracking good lookalike!"
Ash, Liverpool, via text

2223: Just been to the loo, did I miss anything?

2219: "Come on city, how hard is it to sign a striker? I'd even take Corradi back at this rate."
Scott, Rochdale, via text

2213: News just in from a BBC source, that Ian Moore has re-joined Tranmere Rovers where his dad Ronnie is the manager.

2212: "A friend at Leeds United has just confirmed to me that Jermaine Beckford is heading to Newcastle in a 2m deal. Not a huge surprise following Dennis Wise. But a huge loss to Leeds."
Neil, London, via text

We are back on - officially.

Talk about a story that has come out of leftfield - this one's a belter. One-time England call-up Anthony Gardner has left the Lane to join Everton on loan until the end of the season. That is a brilliant deadline day move. Thoughts, Everton fans?

What an about turn this is from the club of all clubs on a day like today. After the German outfit earlier said Gilberto had failed his second medical at Spurs, Juande Ramos' side have after all swooped to sign the Brazilian left-back. Thanks to Sammy 'The Lyon' Lyon for that heads up. Hero.

2159: Don't forget, I need you guys. In my hours of need, your banter, wit and frankly preposterous rumour-mongering is keeping me going. Text me on 81111 or get stuck into the messageboards on 606 - that's why they're there. And don't forget, we're open until later tonight, so you can keep posting until 0030 GMT. Get in that mixer, young man/woman.

2156: I have to give a mention, at last, to the great Faustino Asprilla. The Colombian headline-making sharpshooter has been mentioned in at least a thousand messages today, so it's only fair he gets a piece of the action. I would sell one of my brothers for him to sign for Forest today.

2151: "My mate is hanging round Anfield now and he just texted me claiming he has just seen Ricardo Quaresma get out of a taxi and get ushered into Anfield! He's not likely to make this up so massive coup for Liverpool if they pull it off."
maverickcristianoVII on 606

Well why would anyone make any rumour up? I believe everything I've been told today, so it should be a belting last three hours and nine minutes of my shift (yep, we're carrying on until 0100 GMT today dudes, in a massive way).

2149: Did I speak too soon?

I just nearly fainted. Brilliantly, we've got a transfer between two Premier League clubs - Canadian defender Paul Stalteri, 30, who has played just seven times for Spurs this season, moves to Craven Cottage on loan until the end of the season. Now just watch us go!

2139: "My mate is Dennis Wise's nephew... he told me that Newcastle are planning a shock 9m move for David Bentley and that they will offer him a contract that is too good to turn down - believable?"
taylor4452 on 606

Yep. I'm willing to believe absolutely anything, otherwise the ridiculous cramp in both my legs would be really, really upsetting me at the moment.

2134: Czech international midfielder Jiri Jarosik has left Scottish champions Celtic to join Russian side FC Samara on a two-year-deal. He used to play for Chelsea and Birmingham, too. Ho hum.

My colleague informs me that Benjani is on his way from Portsmouth up to Manchester, presumably for talks/a medical with City ahead of his possible transfer. Now if that doesn't get the old juices flowing, I don't know what would.

2128: "Does anyone know how much I have been sold for?"
Jermaine Defoe, London, via text

Just one problem with that, "JD" - surely if you really were Jermain Defoe, you'd know there is no 'e' on the end of his first name. Gutted.

2126: "My mate Tom was on his paper round earlier and went past the Reebok Stadium as part of his route. He swears he saw Peter Crouch walk into the door frame on his way into the main reception with Gary Megson and Phil Gartside. Watch this space."
Rich, Bolton, via text

Mate, space-watching is just about all I'm doing. Though I'm amused at the thought of Peter Crouch walking into a door frame.

2122: "Forest have just signed Pierre Van Hooijdonk. Excited?"
RichardNFFC on 606

God yeah, but only if we got Dave Bassett back as manager at the same time.

2120: "My dad is a director at Reading and says the club has accepted a 6m fee for Stephen Hunt from Sunderland and he is on his way there now!"
Will from Reading, via text

Please let it happen. Though an Irishman signing for Sunderland? It doesn't sound all that likely to me, if I'm being honest.

2115: "My prediction: Jonathan Stevenson spotted in the dole queue on Monday."
jacob_burns on 606

Well it couldn't be any duller than this, could it? I'd pay seven of your English pounds for a really good transfer to happen now (cue flood of messages suggesting I get paid too much)...

2113: (See 2057) "John - don't drive and text at the same time. It's dangerous."
Andrew from Norwich, via text

Oh my God this is now officially the most boring transfer deadline day ever. Look what we've become, people.

2106: RANGERS in/FULHAM out
Northern Ireland midfielder Steven Davis has signed for SPL leaders Rangers on loan until the end of the season. That's the best I can do.

2102: Manchester City say the Ishmael Miller deal will rise to 1.5m. A transfer AND a fee - I feel like I've been spoilt.

2100: I'm officially frustrated - this is actually quite boring. Sorry if you lot were expecting much more to happen, so were we. But remember, I'll be here for another four hours to tell you anything that does happen involving Alves, Defoe or anyone else. Goody.

2057: "I'm just driving past Ibrox and Nicklas Bendtner is going in! Good signing."
John, via text

2053: "Darren Fletcher is in Birmingham lining up a loan move from Man Utd."
Ed from Birmingham, via text

That's a rumour we've heard plenty about today. Could be a good move that by Alex McLeish, who knows Fletch well from his Scotland days. United don't exactly need him do they?

2048: CELTIC in
The Bhoys get their man as free-scoring midfielder Barry Robson snubs the advances of League One Nottingham Forest and instead opts to sign for Scottish champions Celtic on a three-and-a-half year contract, for about 1m.

Wigan have signed Norway international defender Erik Hagen, 32, on loan from Russian club Zenit St Petersburg until the end of the season.

2040: "My sources inside Old Trafford say Dimitar Berbatov is inside having a medical for a 32.5m bid accepted."
RedDevilsDanny on 606

Crikey, if Spurs sell anymore strikers they'll have to re-sign Sir Les Ferdinand and Teddy Sheringham before the window shuts.

2038: "Two weeks back I explained to the missus why it was great King Kev was back at Newcastle, she was enthralled. Tonight she can't understand why I'm not having dinner."
Andy, via text

2033: (See 2019) "Good news Jonathan, Chris, and others - HMRC have given everyone an extra 24 hours to fill in their tax returns after the website crashed. Happy days!

Sam in Reading xx, via text

Happy days indeed. Hopefully these chairman can put the form away for a few hours then and concentrate on livening up our dull lives with some super signings!

2031: "Young Barca striker Bojan has been seen around the Emirates Stadium - what a signing this would be for the - Gunners."
Phillip in north London, via text

Dream on pal - it's about as likely as Barry Robson choosing Forest over Celtic!

2028: News from League One/Two now and I'm going to have to be careful what I say because I'm not best pleased. Neil Lennon, who a year ago was good enough to captain Celtic in the last 16 of the Champions League, is deemed surplus to requirements at Nottingham Forest and has joined Wycombe Wanderers on a free transfer.

2023: More news from Pearlo: "I've heard that Spurs have staff in Spain to conduct medicals. Make of that what you will, but I can't see Jermain Defoe being sold with Darren Bent injured unless they have a Plan B."

I can't see Sevilla letting Diego Capel go - he's brilliant that boy, he absolutely tormented Barcelona when they met in the cup a few weeks ago. Wonder who else it might be.

2019: "Jonathan, midnight is also of course the tax return deadline. Wish I had fired the accountant and just put tax due: 'undisclosed fee' now."
Chris, midlands, via text

Good chat. Wonder how many people you've just reminded who haven't returned their form yet. Remember, tax doesn't have to be taxing...

2017: News in from the Championship, where Charlton have swooped to replace Andy Reid by snapping up Lee Cook from Fulham on loan until the end of the season.

Young striker Ishmael Miller completes his permanent transfer to Championship leaders West Brom for - yep, you've guessed it - an undisclosed fee. Starting to get annoyed by this now. GIVE US A PRICE!!

2008: "Mark Bresicano has just been seen at Manchester airport. Has Sven revived his interest in the Australlian?"
Adam, Chester, via text

He might just have, yeah. I'm pretty sure City fans are more desperate for a striker than another good midfielder, though.

2005: I want an official apology from everyone who slaughtered me for not announcing the permanent signing of Javier Mascherano to Liverpool. On their official website, the Reds say "the deal is yet to be finalised." It doesn't happen very often, but I love being right! Hahaha.

2001: "Caicedo's good on Football Manager. That's all I know."
mint911 on 606

Sometimes, that's all you need to know.

1957: "In light of David Rozenhal's move to Lazio, Newcastle will now sign Wes Brown for 5m with Nani also going to Newcastle on loan."
Anonymous, via text

1955: Look, loads of you have been slaughtering us for not publishing a story on Manchester City signing Ecuadorian striker Felipe Caicedo. Now we aren't 100% sure he has signed yet because we're waiting for confirmation from the club, but that hopefully won't take long.

1952: LAZIO in/NEWCASTLE out
Mistake-ridden defender David Rozenhal does indeed join struggling Italian giants Lazio on loan until the end of the season.

1949: "A reliable source informs me Jonathan Stevenson is eating thin crust pepperoni pizza having turned down a move for a margherita."
Mark, Leighton Buzzard, via text

It's some sort of meat feast, in fairness. There's too much going on for me to pay particular attention, I'm just eating it - in many ways, that's all I can do.

1944: I'm eating a pizza. That's not a rumour, it's a fact.

1941: "My 'instincts' tell me Arsene Wenger will purchase a centre-back in the dying minutes of the transfer window. I wonder who."
MyCescyArsenal on 606

1939: "I had a dream last night, that Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid for 152m and made them the poorest team in the world."
Usy in St Albans, via text

1933: There are a lot of rumours flying around about the future of Everton striker Andrew Johnson - people have allegedly seen him massively getting involved with Bolton Wanderers. Can't see it myself, but maybe one to watch out for.

1928: "I think I've broken my F5 key with all the frantic refreshing. Any more David Villa to Spurs whispers?"
Chris, London, via text

I haven't moved 96% of my body for the last 210 minutes, so your worrying about the old F5 key doesn't wash with me. But yeah, there are loads of Villa to Spurs rumours, if that isn't too complicated. He's class, that boy.

1925: "Have it on reliable authority that Newcastle are looking to hijack Jermain Defoe's proposed move to Pompey!"
artillery_john on 606ztztopop on 606

1922: A Liverpool spokesman has told BBC Sport he has heard nothing about Javier Mascherano's supposed permanent transfer to the Anfield club. Now that's not to say it won't happen, but let's maybe hold fire on it for a sec.

1918: "My prediction... A dramatic late bid by Newcastle for Emile Heskey to help get Michael Owen firing."
Reshad in London, via text

Blinding rumour - it's just the sort of thing you can imagine happening, too.

1914: Our sources say it is extremely likely that Newcastle defender David Rozenhal will join Italian giants Lazio on loan until the end of the season.

1911: "Newcastle are planning to snap up Deco from Barcelona in the next couple of hours for 15m Euros."
Alan, Leeds, via text

1905: "Bit of Championship gossip - Palace are set to sign Rob Hulse on loan from Sheffield United. My source is a good one and it sure aint Ketchup."
Matt, Croydon, via text

1902: "According to one of my mates that lives in Tottenham he has heard from an insider that Spurs are planning a loan bid for David Beckham."
Ben on 606

I love the Beckham to Spurs rumour. Barely a transfer window passes without that old chestnut cropping up. Magical stuff.

1859: "Diego Milito will sign for Liverpool tonight in a move that will be funded by Peter Crouch joining Newcastle."
Tony D in Southampton, via text

1853: "Bizarre one, but apparently my sources in Argentina tell me Javier Saviola will be loaned to Spurs if Defoe goes."
Morris in London, via text

Oh yeah - I tell you about Transfer Mole and suddenly everyone's got a 'source'. We'll see.

1848: "Jonathan, my sources in Italy have been in touch to let me know KK is allowing David Rozehnal to join Lazio for the rest of the season."
Anonymous, via text

1845: "My sources from inside say that Chelsea are considering a late bid for Real Madrid's Royston Drenthe."
ztztopop on 606

Bang. That's why you're still glued, all these hours later. Portly Republic of Ireland schemer Andy Reid, currently injured, completes his deadline day move to Roy Keane's Sunderland, on a three-and-a-half year deal for 4m. We are properly under way now.

1837: "Jonathan, why are so many transfer fees 'undisclosed' by the clubs? Gives us fans more to debate when we know the fee instead of speculation!"
Anonymous, via text

I agree. It's utterly infuriating and frankly shouldn't be allowed. The key details of transfers should be made known to fans - cos without us mugs, they wouldn't have the funds to buy anyone. Fact.

1835: One rumour that won't be happening is that of US international goalkeeper Brad Guzan to Aston Villa. The proposed 2m deal was cancelled after the player's work permit application was turned down. Gutted.

1833: "My mate knows Darren Bent and reckons Bent is joining Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season. Don't know where that leaves the Defoe deal."
Dan, Bristol, via text

Good rumour, possible too. I like possible ones. They're the best.

1831: "Has Transfer Mole got any more news on the Charlton-Sunderland-Reid scenario? As a Charlton fan I'm praying he doesn't go - he's just getting back up to match fitness and we need him!"
arryaddick on 606

As soon as TM gets in touch, you'll be the first to know. I remember a few years back when we lost Reidy and Michael Dawson on transfer deadline day. We got relegated at the end of that season. Good luck if he goes pal.

1822: Transfer Mole latest:
Scunthorpe's Martin Paterson could go for as much as 5m as Sunderland, Derby, Fulham and Reading are all interested. Watford and Burnley are keen too, but the only club to bid so far are Norwich.

1817: England legend Michael Ricketts (is the word 'legend' really overused?) has had his contract cancelled by League One drifters Oldham. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

1816: "Do you think people actually stand outside their clubs expecting to see famous players walking in and out the front doors on deadline day? Get real."
vanpersieisagod on 606

Clearly you've never watched Sky Sports News then, mate.

1810: "Best near transfer of all time was when Jack Walker decided that Blackburn didn't need to sign a new midfielder as they'd just got Garry Flitcroft. The rejected centre-mid? Zinedine Zidane."
Greggsy, via text

Chelsea midfielder Anthony Grant, 20, joins League One promotion-chasers Southend on loan until the end of the season. See, it's all kicking off now.

TM was right, Grzegorz Rasiak is on the move. The Polish hitman with goals in his head gets another chance in the Premier League and Bolton might just be a good club for him. Rasiak joins on loan until the end of the season.

1803: There are rumours on French television that Manchester United are frantically trying to conclude a 20m move for Karim Benzema."
Zippy, George and Bungle on 606

You cannot be serious? You can't be Zippy, George and Bungle, that's just ridiculous.

1759: More news from TM - Martin Paterson might be the next big deal of the day, but Scunthorpe are holding out for 4m from Norwich for their highly-rated 20-year-old striker.

1755: IPSWICH in/DERBY out
Derby's ultra-confident young goalkeeper Stephen Bywater moves on loan to Championship side Ispwich on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move. Ipswich also bag Plymouth Argyle midfielder David Norris, 26, for an undisclosed fee - rumoured to be up to 2m. Blimey.

1751: News just in from my Transfer Mole: Ade Akinbiyi is staying put (steady there, Newcastle fans). More from TM very shortly...

1748: "This is rubbish - I'm off to watch some paint dry. Wake me up when it's over."

What a massive snub, gutted. Don't blame me if you're snoozing when Wigan Athletic swoop for Alexandre Pato, or some such other ridiculous transfer.

1746: "Ronaldinho nearly signed for St Mirren just before he joined PSG a few years ago!"
Paul, Glasgow, via text

1740: NORWICH in/ARSENAL out
Another confirmed deal that many of you know already, with Arsenal's 18-year-old midfielder Kieran Gibbs joining busy Norwich on loan until the end of the season.

1735: "Southampton's Rasiak is the Championship player in question on his way to Bolton."
Anonymous, via text

Well, that's two rumours dealt with then, as Bolton boss Gary Megson has confirmed they are set to sign a Champ striker on loan. Happy days.

1733: "I remember a few years ago that Barnsley were linked with Roberto Baggio, how times change."
Alex, Worthing, via text

1721: As well as your rumours from today, I want to know your favourite transfer rumours of all time. To kick you off, I love that Sheffield United were once linked with a swoop for Diego Armando Maradona. The little legend even mentions it in his autobiogragphy. Awesome.

1716: LEEDS in/BOLTON out
Slovakian central defender Lubomir Michalik drops down two divisions to join Gary McAllister's Elland Road revolution.

1710: "A good friend tells me that he has just spotted Pablo Aimar in Liverpool - which would be great for the Reds if he signed."
expertdalton8 on 606

1705: "My girlfriend's husband's boyfriend drives a minicab and just dropped Ade Akinbiyi off at Newcastle."
Anonymous, via text

KK panic-biyi, surely not? Heard this one from a few sources now, not that that means much.

1703: "I''ll keep sending till you put it on - Seth Johnson is about to sign on the dotted line for Hull City on a pay-as-you-play deal. To the play-offs we go!"
Ben, Hull, via text

Yeah, you can stop sending it now pal, thanks.

1658: My Championship mole, who shall remain nameless, believes that Grzegorz Rasiak, John Viafara and Rudi Skacel are all on their way from Southampton. The very same mole also reckons Norwich have officially bid for Scunthorpe striker Martin Paterson.

1654: My mate Pearlo is normally quite good with the latest transfer chat and he has this offering from White Hart Lane: "Spurs to make a move for Diego Capel at 2359 GMT." Hero.

1650: A decent Championship transfer is confirmed, with Stoke captain John Eustace, 28, joining Watford - who are only two points ahead of the Potters - for 250,000.

1642: "Gareth Barry has just been seen with his agent going in to Goodison Park, along with Theo Walcott."
jongre123 on 606

Nice rumour. For those of you saying you've seen Nathan Tyson at Bolton, I'm not particularly interested. Terrified, more like.

1639: "My fiancee works on the front desk of The Grosvenor on Park Lane and has just texted me to say that a suite is booked for the next two nights under the name R Assis Moreira. 'Apparently he's a footballer, ever heard of him?' she asks. Yep."
Oscar M, via text

Right then, let's put this particular rumour to bed for today. If Ronaldinho leaves Barcelona tonight, I will offer my resignation in the morning.

1635: Breaking non-news from my esteemed colleague Saj Chowdhury, who will hopefully be entertaining me throughout a long evening: "Palermo have told BBC Sport that their Brazilian striker Amauri will remain with the club despite reports of a 15m bid from Chelsea."

Good work Saj.

1631: "Billy Sharp seen at the City Ground."
Anonymous, via text

I am all over that chat like a rash. I'm expecting a late rush of Forest signings tonight...

1627: "More news on lower leagues please. I find it hard to believe that none of the top six in the Championship are shopping for last minute deals! Make some calls BBC guys!"
cityfanontour on 606

Yeah, because on a day when we've got the transfer deadline, an England squad announcement under a new manager and the manager of the months awards, we've got loads of spare time on our hands. Jeez...

1625: "Michael Bridges spotted outside Ninian Park with Peter Ridsdale. That's all we need, another over-the-hill ex-Leeds striker that couldn't hit a cow's backside with a banjo."
Taff, via text

1622: "Defoe seen at St James' Park."
Pk in Newcastle, via text

Blimey. He's a long way away from Pompey, then.

1621: Now this is news (sorry Fletch). Tottenham and Portsmouth have reportedly agreed a fee for England striker Jermain Defoe. What sort of chain is that going to set off I wonder...

1618: My colleague Jez informs me that his boys Swindon have been linked with a move for Reading striker Simon Cox. Stay with us lower division fans, we're not going to ignore you this evening, no way.

1616: "Javier Saviola spotted at Fratton Park, by my mate... could be a wind-up."
bowkers123 on 606

Brilliant gossip, which begs an interesting question - would you rather get the odd piece of action for Real Madrid, or play first-team football for Portsmouth?

1612: "Stevo - re: 1600 comment. 24-16=8, not 9. I'm doing a maths degree you know."
Anonymous, via text

Maybe I should have clarified, then - I'll be giving you all the latest transfer updates until 0100 GMT, due to the spate of transfers that clubs only announce after the transfer window has slammed shut. Remember Ashley Cole's protracted move from Arsenal to Chelsea? That's why I'm hanging around.

1609: In case you weren't paying attention while Fletch was here, this is how you get in touch: Text me on 81111, or get involved on our 606 messageboards. These are brilliant days, aren't they?

1605: News breaking, as Fabio Capello names his first England squad. David Beckham is obviously out, but the other 30 names are not a massive surprise. Paul Robinson and Robert Green miss out, there's no place for Phil Neville and Alan Smith is left out in the cold, too.

1600: Fletch, words fail me. In the face of such alarming inactivity, you've kept the punters interested and the chat flying around in stunning fashion. Hopefully, the next nine hours will see some proper business done. Here we go...

By Paul Fletcher

1555: OK, that is just about it from me for this most thrilling of transfer deadlines. We haven't had much material to work with so many thanks for the literally 1000s of 606 and text rumours that have ensured the day has ticked along nicely.

I'm now off to end a month without booze (terms and conditions applied) and Jonathan Stevenson is going to become absolutely hammered in another sense as the window kicks into life (probably).

1550: (See 1436) "I am all for trendy nicknames but K Squared is not really correct. K Squared would just be K. To arrive at KK the calculation would be 2K."
RedandWhiteTractor on 606

That could well be enough KK chat for today.

A member of staff at Middlesbrough confirms to the BBC that Brazilian Afonso Alves has been granted a work permit - however, there are still details to be worked through before his deal from Dutch side Heerenveen is completed.

1535: DERBY in/EVERTON out
At last - a transfer involving two Premier League clubs as veteran defender Alan Stubbs signs an 18-month deal with the Rams. It is a free transfer, BTW.

1527: (See 1436) "Rather than pronounce KK as double K, can we not go for the cooler expression of dubbing him the mighty K squared? Just a thought."
Dan, London, via text on 81111.

Dan, if that will make you happy then please feel free.

All go at Craven Cottage as Roy Hodgson further bolsters his squad with the capture of 29-year-old defender Tony Kallio.

1520: ACTUAL NEWS Lazio in/MAN CITY out
Ousmane Dabo has returned to Lazio, ending his love affair with English football, sort of. Dabo played for Man City just once under Sven-Goran Eriksson, as a substitute in the Carling Cup tie at Bristol City in August.

1515: (See 1457) Just a little bit more chat on Atalanta - apparently it is a club based in Bergamo and has no real history of hosting the Olympics. Many thanks to Chrissy in Glasgow for that.

1505: Just an early heads-up to say that you'll be spared reading any more of my drivel at about 1550, when Jonathan Stevenson takes over for what will surely prove to be the business end of the day. If the day has already peaked then I fear the worst.

1500: FULHAM in
Fulham have boosted their squad with the capture of veteran striker Jari Litmanen. The 36-year-old, once of Liverpool, was unattached.

1457: "Atalanta is in the USA. They held the Olympics there. Come on Fletcher, get your facts straight!"
Tom via text on 81111

This better be irony or you are going to look like a bit of a numpty.

1452: Only five of the 20 Premier League clubs have been involved in some deadline day business so far. Not good enough.

1436: The Newcastle press office have just been very coy when asked whether the club are poised to sign Fabio Zamblera from Atalanta in Italy. They are, apparently, waiting to hear confirmation from "upstairs".

Could the transfer window wheel of truth (I know, I am talking nonsense now) be about to turn for KK (pronounced double K)?

1430: A bit of transfer news from the lower divisions - Darren Kenton has joined Leeds from Leicester until the end of the season.

1423: "I work in the haberdashery dept at a famous department store and I have just seen Bobo Balde leaving the owner's office."
Brendan via text on 81111

I'm honestly starting to wonder what the point is of having a transfer window if the deadline day is not action packed with juicy transfers that we never saw coming. For instance, Newcastle have yet to score since KK's return to the club. Why hasn't Keegan gone out there and done the right thing?

1418: We are less than 10 hours until the window closes. As the morning gives way to the afternoon, airport staff are giving way to taxi drivers as the source of choice on 606 and via text on 81111.

1413: Lots of chat on 606 that Jermain Defoe could be on his way to Pompey. Sticking with south coast clubs, another name that has been popping up all day is that of German striker Carsten Jancker, who is apparently joining Southampton (dependent on how easily persuaded you are/the credibility you give to dubious sources).

1404: "Havant and Waterlooville manager meeting Fernando Torres. Rumour has it he wants to move to a big club with some decent history."
sserruya on 606

We are just getting very, very silly now. What we need are some decent transfers.

Charlton have signed defender Greg Halford from Sunderland on loan until the end of the season. Remember kids, midfielder Andy Reid is set to move the other way. Maybe they will pass each other on the motorway.

1341: Lots and lots of 606 chat about Frederic Kanoute and a return to the Premier League with Portsmouth. Benjani, meanwhile, is thought to be having a medical at Man City. We could potentially have a deadline day transfer merry-go-round. And everyone wants that.

1335: Still no word yet from Middlesbrough, who are thought to be very keen on signing Brazilian striker Afonso Alves from Dutch side Heerenveen. Alves was in the crowd for Boro's match against Wigan on Tuesday - and that is fact, not rumour.

Another move widely thought to be happening is Jari Litmanen joining Fulham. No word on that either. Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson is hopeful the veteran striker will help his team avoid finnishing (geddit?) in the bottom three.

1325: Some lower division chat - Port Vale have turned down a 60,000 bid for Luke Rodgers, I am reliably informed.

1312: Meanwhile some news from BBC Sport's Colin Moffat north of the border.

"Hibernian have signed Kilmarnock striker Colin Nish and Algeria international defender, Abderaouf Zarabi. Dundee United have taken Celtic midfielder Jim O'Brien on loan for the rest of the season - a makeweight for Barry Robson's proposed transfer? (See 1141).

Meanwhile, the Glasgow rumour-mill has gone into overdrive, with Rangers being linked with a move for Sampdoria striker Andrea Caracciolo..."

1308: "I'm a taxi driver down here in the south, and I've just given Freddie Kanoute a lift from Bournemouth airport to the Pompey training ground."
Grzegorz24 on 606

Kanoute is heading for an 'airports visited in a 24-hour period' world record. When I first read this 606 post I actually thought you were about to suggest he was signing for the Cherries.

1307: BBC Radio Derby Sport understands that Paul Jewell could turn to Everton defender Alan Stubbs to shore up the Derby defence, with a loan deal until the end of the season a possibility.

1300: "I have just finished cutting Everton chairman Bill Kenwright's grass and saw him in his conservatory talking with Shola Ameobi and some other guys."
Chris Hetherington via text on 81111

If nothing else an interesting variation on the 'my mate works at an airport' theme.

1255: It has been reported that Portsmouth striker Benjani is having a medical at Man City. We spoke to City and they refused to confirm or deny...

1251: Hmm, it would seem to be Kasey Keller.

1250:(See 1241) 606 users are suggesting Edwin van der Sar and Claudio Reyna. Though Reyna is not in the Premier League anymore, so I'm still one short.

1249: David Nugent, Louis Saha, John Hartson, Darren Bent, Leroy Lita and Gary McSheffrey all spotted at Bolton (apparently). They should stick them all in the stand and boost the average attendance.

1242: DERBY in/RANGERS out
Goalkeeper Roy Carroll joins Derby from Rangers on loan until the end of the season. I make that the first signing by a Premier League club today.

1241: I need some help with regard to the following:

"There are only two players belonging to Premiership teams who have 100 caps for their countries. Can you guess who they are Paul?
gigaFabFab on 606

1240: "When are all these scouts in Africa from the Premier League going to report back? Bring in some African quality quick before that window slams shut faster than a rampaging elephant."
FootballManagerKing on 606

See what you've done there. In case you missed it earlier in the week, BBC Sport broke the news that 15 out of the 20 Premier League clubs have scouts at the Africa Cup of Nations.

1230: Pablo Aimar at Liverpool, Jermain Defoe everywhere, nobody at Bolton. It is very much rumours left, right and centre.

1225: (See 1205) "Sorry Paul, just eaten a bacon butty with mushrooms fried in butter....gorgeous!"
Podpot on 606

Panic not, I've just grabbed a sandwich. Now, if we could just have a quiet five minutes.

1210: Veteran striker Geoff Horsfield has joined Scunthorpe from Championship rivals Sheffield United on loan.

1205: A lot of suggestions on 606 that West Ham striker Dean Ashton has been spotted at the City of Manchester stadium.

I have now been up for six hours and have yet to eat anything. Must be lunch time soon.

1200: With exactly 12 hours to go until the transfer window slams shut here is some hot breaking news.....

"I am transferring money from my current account to credit card account as today is pay day."
Dave from Reading via text on 81111

1155: "My girlfriend works at The Lowry hotel in Manchester and Felipe Caicedo checked in at 1115 with 6 suited men! I heard City are after him."
PJ in Stockport via text on 81111

FYI, Caicedo is an Ecuador international striker who currently plays for Basel in Switzerland. He has been linked with City.

1150: Charlton midfielder Andy Reid is holding talks with Sunderland after the two clubs agreed a fee. Lots of talk today, a few more actual moves wouldn't go amiss.

1141: News from Scotland. Celtic have had a seven figure bid accepted from Dundee United for skipper Barry Robson. Forest have also had an offer accepted. Barry, it's over to you.

1140: There are reports kicking about suggesting that Manucho, who has been superb for Angola at the Nations Cup, will join Greek side Panathinaikos on loan until the end of the season. Remember, he has joined Man Utd subject to securing a work permit.

1137: Some Tottenham news for you - Paul Robinson has joined Real Madrid on loan. Joking. In actual fact German side Hertha Berlin says Gilberto's transfer to Tottehham has collapsed following a second medical.

1135: "I've just seen Kaka on the Kings Road. What a signing if we get him!"
True Blue via text on 81111

Doing a spot of shopping was he?

Kaka is the number one fantasy target, as it were, on 606 and the text this morning. Worksop_Blade spotted him on the number 76 bus heading to Bramall Lane. Needless to say, several airport workers have clocked him. I think Chelsea and the Blades have an equal chance of signing him - none.

1125: Some breaking news of a non-transfer variety - Becks out of the England squad. Hmm, that 100th cap is starting to look a long way away.

1120: I arrived at my desk this morning pumped, ready to roll, but the transfers so far have hardly turned football on its head. What we really need today is a massive multi-million pound move that nobody, not even airport workers, saw coming. That would be explosive.

1115: More chat - Momo Sissoko turned down Spurs before signing for Juventus, while Theo Walcott has definitely ruled out a loan move away from Arsenal.

"Every day I play at Arsenal, I train with some of the best players in the world," said Walcott.

"My game is obviously going to benefit most from being around these people. With respect to other clubs, that is not going to happen anywhere else.

1110: Two players figuring heavily on 606 this morning - John Hartson and Frederic Kanoute. Two very different characters I'm sure you'll agree.

Hartson has been spotted here, there and everywhere (within a lower division framework, obviously), while the airport workers have been busy again, clocking Kanoute arriving from Ghana, where he has been on Nations Cup duty.

1105: Ipswich are set to sign goalkeeper Stephen Bywater on loan. Don't forget, the Rams are close to signing Roy Carroll from Rangers.

Thanks to majestic_itfc_fan for the tip off. BTW, 606 is very much open all hours today. Instead of bringing the shutters down at 1100 GMT it will be open for another 90 minutes, an appropriate extension really.

1100: "Bolton need a striker today. Today. Come on chairman Phil Gartside get that fax out of your old sky rocket and tell us we've signed Lita, Pandev, Bent - even Shearer!!"
angles2 on 606

Desperate them Bolton fans. Nugent anyone?

1054: Forest's 1.25m bid for Coventry's Leon Best has been rejected. Tottenham rule out a move for Charles N'Zogbia. Today is starting to pick up pace, a bit.

1054: A thought just occurs to me. Bolton have now parted company with Nicolas Anelka and Christian Wilhelmsson during the transfer window. Surely boss Gary Megson has got someone lined up?

1045: LA CORUNA in/BOLTON out
Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna have completed the loan signing of Sweden international Christian Wilhelmsson. The 28-year-old winger had been at Bolton on a 12-month loan deal from French side Nantes.

1041: Many thanks to all the people who have been on 606 so far to alert us to alleged sightings of various players. It does make me wonder, though, just how many people work at the various airports around the country and whether the many reports of delayed flights/long check-in queues etc might be attributable in part to the fact that all the staff spend all their time spotting footballers. Particularly at John Lennon airport.

1027: It is all going off in the lower divisions. Nottingham Forest bid 1.25m for Coventry striker Leon Best (according to reports).

1021: NORWICH in/READING out
Some more transfer news - Reading have allowed teenage duo Alex Pearce and James Henry to join Championship outfit Norwich on loan.

Canaries boss Glenn Roeder has been busy, with Middlesbrough's Matthew Bates signing earlier in the day.

Thanks norwich_4_epl on 606 for the steer.

Watford have completed the signing of Sheffield United defender Leigh Bromby for an initial 600,000, though that will rise to 850,000 dependent on appearances.

Bromby played for the Blades against Watford on Tuesday. Must have impressed.

1005: "Wesley Hoolahan of Blackpool has just been seen by a friend of mine at Stoke's training ground."
Ian via text on 81111

It is not all about the Premier League, there is plenty of life in them there lower divisions - and the way Stoke are playing at the moment they might be at the top table next season.

And talking of life outside the Premier League, Stockport have accepted a bid from Leeds for striker Anthony Elding.

1000: "I'm a Bolton fan, and if we do not get an out and out striker in the next few hours, I'm afraid of what might happen come the end of the season... Beattie? Bent? Anyone...!!"
markcocky1986 on 606

If you don't sign a striker and the Trotters are relegated I presume that you will just be plain old mark1986.

Come on managers - sign some players.

0950: I will be very interested to see how many of today's Premier League transfers involve foreign players moving to England.

I say this because I was intrigued to read Football Association boss Brian Barwick expressing his fears about the declining pool of talent available to the England manager.

"The Premier League is a great league but it has a responsibility to deliver some good players to the FA," said Barwick.

It begs the question - do the chairman/managers/fans of Premier League clubs care whether or not their club's transfer policy is helpful to the England team?

0940: One transfer that probably will not happen is Giles Barnes moving to Newcastle.

Derby boss Paul Jewell revealed that he had rejected a verbal offer for the 19-year-old midfielder and added: "Newcastle said they would not be coming back." We'll see.

0932: Not surprisingly, there was plenty of chat in this morning's newspapers about who might be moving where. Some of the top suggestions are that Tottenham are going to sign Diego Capel (no relation to David I presume) from Sevilla, while Portsmouth are ready to offer 5m plus Lauren in order to secure the services of Real Mallorca winger Jonas Gutierrez.

0920: "I have just seen Tino Asprilla arriving by private jet at St James' Park. He is looking lean and fit and ready to bring back the glory days to NUFC alongside King Kev!"
Tim Westhoughtonwood on 606

Ha, ha. This rumour business could really get out of hand. I know they have done a lot of working expanding the ground but I'm struggling to work out how this private jet has landed at St James' Park.

0908: News just coming in from Derby is that the struggling Rams, thrashed by Preston in the FA Cup last weekend, are about to bolster their squad with the capture of goalkeeper Roy Carroll from Glasgow Rangers.

0902: 606 has opened and you lot can now get seriously involved. Normally 606 closes at 2300 GMT but not today. Just like your local back in the days when an after-hours extension was pure gold, 606 will be open until 0030 so that you can discuss all the latest transfer chat.

0900: "Juan Roman Riquelme has just arrived at John Lennon airport to be met by Everton chief exec Keith Wyness."
Anonymous via text on 81111

A good, early rumour. Is there any truth in it? I have absolutely no idea.

What I can say is that the Argentine left Villarreal in Spain for Boca Juniors of Buenos Aires in November after a very unhappy spell in Spain. I think the chances of him returning from Boca so soon are slim. Though maybe Wyness has been hired as a tour guide for the day and Riquelme is checking out the European city of culture.

0840: Can I make something clear nice and early - not every deal will be covered on this page. There will doubtless be loads and loads of loan moves involving clubs from outside the Premier League and it is unrealistic to think that I will make mention of every single one.

However, all the Premier League deals will appear in this clockwatch and a list of all the day's transfers can be found on the BBC website.

The biggest and most interesting moves from outside the top flight will of course be covered (terms and conditions apply).

Here we go for another Transfer Deadline Day.

One early one deal to tell you about is that Middlesbrough have agreed to loan 21-year-old defender Matthew Bates to Championship side Norwich until 28 April.

It is not exactly a multi-million pound deal involving a high-profile international but at least it gets the ball rolling.

I'll be endeavouring to keep you up to date with all the big moves to day and I'd love to hear about a) what you've heard is going to happen and b) the quality of your source/information.

So if Barry from Berkshire writes that Ronaldinho is off to Chelsea (a perennial transfer deadline favourite) it would be very handy to know, Barry, if you heard it off a bloke down the pub or actually spotted the buck-toothed Brazilian heading into a secret meeting at a Travelodge on the M25.

I'd also be interested to hear what you think about the various comings and goings.
