Jol must wait for opening at Ajax
By Sam Lyon

When something good crosses my path, I want to think about that. I would like to become champions somewhere

Martin Jol
Former Spurs boss Martin Jol will have to wait until next summer if he wants to take over as coach of Ajax.

The Dutch giants have yet to name a permanent replacement for new Chelsea coach Henk ten Cate, with Adrie Koster named interim manager for the season.

And Jol said: "If I get a feeling about Ajax, I'll absolutely think about it."

However, a club spokesperson told BBC Sport: "I can imagine he is interested but nothing is going on. I think we will stay as we are until the summer."

Jol, 51, is without a club after being sacked by Spurs last week following their disastrous start to the season, which has left the club in the bottom three of the Premier League.

However, after revealing he could manage again in England, calling it "a fantastic country", the Dutchman hinted he would be willing to wait if it meant the right opportunity coming along.

"I want to recharge my batteries first," he said. "When something good crosses my path, I want to think about that. I would like to become champions somewhere.

"I could step into a job where I can build the team up from the bottom or I could choose to go to a club with experienced players, because you can win prizes much more easily with those kind of players."

One job that is unlikely to open itself up for Jol in the near future is that of Holland national coach.

Marco van Basten had come under pressure after a poor start to their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, but recent results have seen them climb to second in Group G and well placed to secure a place in next summer's finals.

And, despite having been reported as admirers of Jol, the Dutch FA are unlikely to talk to him about replacing Van Basten.

"There are no plans to approach Martin Jol for that position," spokesman Rob de Leede told BBC Sport.

"Van Basten's contract expires after Euro 2008 and the plan is that talks with him are due some time after that next year."
