The big-money deal of transfer deadline day saw West Ham sign Birmingham central defender Matthew Upson for £6m.
Hearts midfielder Paul Hartley joined Celtic for a reported £1.1m, while the Bhoys finally sold Shaun Maloney to Aston Villa late in the day.
Liverpool and Watford added to their ranks with a host of new faces and Bolton bagged David Thompson.
Earlier Gareth Williams joined Watford from Leicester and full-back Michael Ball was snapped up by Manchester City.

ASTON VILLA buy/CELTIC sell
Villa boss Martin O'Neill told BBC Sport he was hopeful of being re-united with his former Celtic charge Shaun Maloney and he got his man. The £1m deal for the midfielder was confirmed at 0015 on Thursday morning.
And would you believe it - there was a final twist regarding Javier Mascherano's move from West Ham to Liverpool. The Argentine's registration documents were sent to the Premier League before the window closed, but the top-flight's governing body wants to "take time to satisfy itself with the proposed arrangements". Until it does, midfielder Mascherano cannot play for Liverpool.
0000: That is that. The window creaks shut, although there may still be a few bits and bobs that have been tied up close to midnight but not yet announced so we will be around for a bit longer yet.
2351: DERBY loan in/WEST HAM loan out
Championship leaders Derby have got their paperwork in order. Rams boss Billy Davies signs Tyrone Mears, a defender who played under him at former club Preston, on loan until the end of the season. That surely concludes a busy January for County who have signed up seven players in the last 31 days.
2350: As Europe might have said, mullets and all, it's the final countdown. Who is frantically filling in forms?
2340: They are up late at St Andrews. Birmingham sign midfielder Gary Dicker on a six-month loan from Irish side University College Dublin. He joins former UCD team-mate Pat Kavanagh at the Blues.
2330: We are crawling towards midnight awaiting news on Javier Mascherano and Shaun Maloney - Celtic and Aston Villa have reportedly agreed a fee. And of course, we are still hoping against hope for something coming in from left field.
2311: STOKE in on loan/CHARLTON out on loan
Having seen Michael Duberry leave for Reading earlier in the day, Stoke bring 27-year-old central defender Jonathan Fortune in on loan from the Addicks.
2307: "He can't walk, he's not OK," is Jose Mourinho's blunt assessment of Ashley Cole. But the self-styled Special One is not going to go into the market for a replacement left-back. "The supermarket is closed," he said. Hope not. There's no milk in the fridge and the loo roll's running thin at home.
2304: There are unconfirmed reports that Liverpool have Javier Mascherano's registration and it is only a matter of time until his move from West Ham is rubber-stamped.
606 gossip: A last shout. Zeus88 is backing West Ham's Paul Konchesky to go to Newcastle. A flyer from mtfc who says David Beckham is set for a spell at Charlton. Chelsea are scouring the market for a suitable defender following Ashley Cole's injury according to stylish2006.
2300: One hour left to go and that is it for the 606 boards. Sleep tight my crazy rumour mongers. Some great tales through the day. Cheers.
2256: Now it is Glenn Roeder's turn in front of the mic at St James' Park. The Newcastle boss does not reckon the Magpies are going to be conducting any late business. That means Albert Luque will not be going to PSV Eindhoven on loan as the Magpies have not found a suitable replacement.
2244: Straight from the horses mouth, well Martin O'Neill's. The Aston Villa boss is "hopeful" about signing Celtic's Shaun Maloney: "There isn't much time and I'm hopeful rather than ultra-confident," he tells BBC Sport after his side's 3-1 loss at Newcastle.
2241: BOLTON buy/PORTSMOUTH sell
Hats off to Five Live's Dave Woods who tipped us off about David Thompson moving to Bolton before Wanderers kicked off against Charlton. The 29-year-old midfielder joins from Portsmouth on a nominal fee.
2233: Just under half-an-hour to get your top tips for last-gasp signings up on 606 and you can always go on air on Five Live with Ray Stubbs. Give Stubbsy a call on 0500 909 693 or text him on 85058.
606 gossip: Ray Parlour is set for a move to Coventry City, according to brownm1 who also suggested David Healy was set for the Sky Blues earlier. Manchester City and not Celta Vigo are lining up Tottenham's Mido says kingfulhamfan. And mtfc is tipping Portsmouth's Matthew Taylor for a move to Watford after a "bust-up" with Harry Redknapp.
2227: It is 1127 local time in New Zealand and the deal that sees All Whites international defender Che Bunce join Coventry has been confirmed. No doubt it will be the talk of the town when Kiwis go for lunch. Bet they don't spend 27 minutes munching on a soggy £1.50 sandwich hunched over their keyboard. If that's all Dutch to you apologies. Entries from 1236 GMT will enlighten you.
606 gossip: The aptly named publicnuisance is doing just that banging on about a major late-night Celtic signing. "My source couldn't believe the player seen at Celtic Park" is his verdict and Juan Roman Riquelme is getting some heat as a future Bhoys player. Watch this space.
2220: The evening's match action is over as Arsenal reach the Carling Cup final after a 3-1 win over north London rivals Tottenham, 5-3 on aggregate.
2207: WATFORD buy/CRETEIL sell
The Hornets are throwing around the funds from the Ashley Young sale like confetti. Central defender Cedric Avinel comes in from Creteil on an 18-month loan deal and midfielder Douglas Rinaldi arrives from Brazilian side Veranopolis EC on loan. A Brazilian called Douglas. Genius.
2201: LIVERPOOL buy/DEP. LA CORUNA & MALAGA sell
No sooner said than done. Liverpool land Spanish duo Alvaro Arbeloa and Francisco Manuel Duran. Defender Arbeloa, 24, is believed to have cost £2.6m from Deportivo La Coruna. As for 18-year-old midfielder Duran, he is for the youth ranks.
2200: Two hours remaining and that Johan Cavalli deal is bound to herald one last burst of activity. Roll up, roll up, come and get a player now.
2149: WATFORD buy/ISTRES sell
Watford may be trailing Manchester United 4-0 on the pitch with a few minutes remaining, but off it they have announced the signing of midfielder Johan Cavalli on a free transfer from French Second Division side Istres. The 25-year-old left-sided player used to be on Real Mallorca's books.
2130: Mido has drawn Tottenham level against Arsenal. Celta Vigo are digging out that Spurs number in their little black book of contacts. Keep up to date here...
2125: About 15 days ago when we started this transfer madness there was that headline from the Daily Mirror that read - Mido told: Get Spurs to final and then leave. Well the Egyptian is on at the Emirates with Tottenham trailing Arsenal 1-0 and 3-2 on aggregate. If he delivers, Celta Vigo are reportedly waiting in the wings. Keep up to date here...
2117: Ditto at The Hawthorns. Plymouth may be trailing West Brom 2-1, but that one came from club-record signing Rory Fallon who scores within six minutes of coming on and 15 minutes into his Argyle career.
2115: If any managers want to know what a couple of January signings can do for you look no further than Aston Villa. They may be losing 2-1 at Newcastle but Ashley Young and John Carew look the business. Keep up to date here...
2113: The Toxteth Terror and his takeaway is a close second to that Fernando Torres road trip around north London which is still on the top step of the podium for rank ludicrousness in my book.
606 gossip: A mid-evening slump in activity, the focus is on what's going on on the pitch and we have one of the best spots of the day. Over to you db310777: "Just spotted Robbie Fowler coming out of the Burger King near the Ricoh Arena with three Double Whopper meals."
2055: Chelsea may have to re-think their spending plans and make a late foray into the transfer market for a defender after all. Ashley Cole is stretchered off with a knee injury after his foot caught in the turf. Keep up to date here...
606 gossip: David Healy is the new Alan Smith. Having been at Ewood Park in Blackburn during the day, he is now down at Coventry's Ricoh Arena, according to brownm1. Will he be replaced at Leeds by Lee Trundle? Alexcp123 has seen the Welshman getting out of a blacked-out car at Elland Road.
2040: CELTIC buy/HEARTS sell
Paul Hartley is a Celtic player. The Scotland midfielder has passed his medical with the SPL leaders and agreed terms on a two-and-a-half year deal. Hearts will receive in the region of £1.1m for their former skipper.
2034: Alan Smith, the man of a thousand faces and places, has been spotted at Old Trafford by my own eyes so I'm going with that one. He is laughing in the stands with present team-mate Ryan Giggs, which suggests the Welshman is probably going to be his future team-mate in February. They are having a right old chuckle, probably at the ridiculous Hoxton fin Smith is sporting. That's a hairstyle if you're confused.
2023: If Lucas Neill and Matthew Upson wanted Upton Park get-out clauses you can bet your bottom Euro Argentine-born Mauro Camoranesi will. Despite winning the World Cup with Italy he still claims he feels 100% Argentine. They should put Camora-mercenary on his shirt.
606 gossip: There has been a lot of quality dross churned out today and as someone mentioned earlier, it's amazing how many people live or loiter around football stadiums - perhaps both if you've nothing better to do. But Peteherts is one of the few who could have been talking sense earlier so we're putting him on a pedestal again with news that Juventus midfielder Mauro Camoranesi is heading to West Ham.
2009: Here's one for everyone in New Zealand (0909 local time) logging on as they get into work or whatever. All Whites international defender Che Bunce is set to complete a move from Waikato FC to Coventry after snubbing Dundee United.
1957: The evening's three remaining are not far from starting as the players emerge from the tunnels at the Reebok Stadium, Old Trafford and St James' Park.
Keep up to date here...
606 gossip: A couple more sightings. The nunnyfox spotted Leeds striker David Healy with Mark Hughes at Ewood Park earlier in the day, while more recently the father of Fat_Tim_1967 has seen a grinning Paul Hartley leave Celtic Park. "Signed? I think so," he says.
1940: Five minutes to kick-off in the Carling Cup semi-final and the Premiership match between Chelsea and Blackburn. Keep up to date here...
1929: Celtic's Shaun Maloney is set to be announced as an Aston Villa player after the Premiership side's match at Newcastle, according to Five Live commentator Ian Dennis.
1925: With teams coming in for the evening matches it does not need Colombo to determine that there have been a high proportion of tall tales out there today. Shaun Wright-Phillips is on the bench at Chelsea and not in Newcastle while Morten Gamst Pedersen is starting for Blackburn at Stamford Bridge, so was that really the Norwegian spotted at Liverpool's Melwood training complex?
1921: EVERTON in on loan/BENFICA out on loan
Everton confirm the signing of Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes on a six-month loan deal from Benfica. The 20-year scored one goal in 12 games for Portsmouth in the first half of the season.
1918: Five Live's Dave Woods is commentating at Bolton's match against Charlton and says there may be something happening between Wanderers and Portsmouth with midfielder David Thompson moving to the north-west. Tal Ben Haim is on the Trotters bench and will not be joining Chelsea at the 11th hour.
606 gossip: Manchester United's Alan Smith either gets about a bit or has a host of dopplegangers out there. He has been seen by you at Manchester City, Aston Villa, Everton and urbanbushmonkey is touting him for a move to Middlesbrough where he has had a medical before a three-month loan deal.
1900: Eight-and-a-half hours down, five hours left, a drink that supposedly gives you wings and the transfer trail has gone cold.
1851: The opportunity for a bit of down time, some food and a comfort break, as they call it in tennis circles, goes up the spout with a call from Radio 2. Can I speak to my grandmother, Marguerite Patten, who has been passing the afternoon chatting food and recipes with Chris Evans and co? This clockwatch has just got me into one hell of a scrape.
606 gossip: Is that a threat from johnnyboy1961? "Ignore me at your peril" he says about a potential move for Darren Huckerby from Norwich to Charlton. Youngroyal is also touting a potential move involving Championship clubs with Tony Capaldi set to go from Plymouth to Stoke.
1824: Championship leaders Derby have boosted their forward ranks with the free signing of Crystal Palace's Jon Macken. The 29-year-old was a £5m move to Manchester City almost five years ago.
606 gossip: The cream of the crop is rising to the top and davedaveydave - so good they named him three times - is sniffing out the coup of the day. His dad thinks he saw Reading chairman John Madesjski with Barcelona's Gio van Bronckhorst at Heathrow.
1813: Talking of Arsenal they have built up a nice bit of money in the bank during this window. The reported 25% they are due from the Matthew Upson deal means they have pulled in more than £5m during January. Not enough for Fernando Torres admittedly, but not bad all the same.
606 gossip: This is a cracker from GuruAleew. Fernando Torres is still driving around north London. It is a wonderful image and bearing in mind he was seen two hours ago in a car in Islington you've got to start thinking his driver must be lost.
1759: After hours of nothing things are picking up. Brighton and Preston may not be the most glamourous of clubs, but the move of Wayne Henderson from the south coast could have a knock-on effect for North End's present stopper Carlo Nash who is keen for a move to London. Cue a bid from Fulham anyone? Watch this space.
1755: WEST HAM buy/BIRMINGHAM sell
Eggert Magnusson we salute you and your bulging wallet. The Icelandic chairman was left shaking his head at West Ham's dire defending last night against Liverpool and has splashed the cash in an effort to fix the problem. Centre-back Matthew Upson, 27, has left Birmingham for London in a £6m deal. It is a four-and-a-half year deal and the fee could rise to £7.5m.
1744: READING buy/STOKE sell
Now those were long talks. Almost seven hours ago we first got word that Stoke skipper Michael Duberry was discussing personal terms with Reading and finally they have emerged from a room - hopefully smoky, but I doubt it - to announce the deal has been done and the drought of top-flight transfers is finally over. The defender, 31, who last played in the Premiership for Leeds against former club Chelsea in May 2004, on a one-and-half-year deal.
1721: Leicester shipped out Gareth Williams earlier and have now shipped in Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield and Tottenham's reserve-team forward Mark Yeates. Two for the price of one - not bad really.
606 gossip: The new way of tracking professional football players is the number plate. JL S4M, allegedly JLloyd Samuel to you and me, was earlier seen in Sheffield. Now J03Y B has been spotted outside St James' Park. That's Joey Barton according to robstevens12, who says Emre is going to Manchester City in a swap deal.
1705: The flipside of the coin is the loyalty and support Paul Hartley has been shown by the Hearts hierachy. He has agreed terms with Celtic and is set for a medical.
1704: Birmingham's Matthew Upson is still holding talks with West Ham and BBC Sport understands he wants a similar escape clause to the Hammers gave Lucas Neill in case the club is relegated. Confidence and loyalty. Don't you just love it.
1700: The average working day is coming to a close, but for football's wheelers and dealers business is surely going to start to hot up soon and the real stuff is only just starting. Fulfil our dreams money men, break the bank if only to give us the will to go on in this hunt for a big or surprising transfer.
1654: West Brom have binned goalkeeper Russell Hoult after his alleged off-field misdemeanours and he has joined Stoke on a free transfer.
606 gossip: Okay, put your serious doctor faces on because we are talking medicals. Peteherts has seen Matthew Upson at the Holly House hospital in Loughton ahead of his much-expected move to West Ham, pies1983 is adamant Manchester United's Alan Smith is being put through his paces at Aston Villa's Bodymoor Heath base.
1638: Southend have signed Motherwell's 26-year-old striker Ritchie Foran for £200,000. That's all well and good, but where are the big-money deals? It is now almost two hours since we broke the £1m barrier for the one and only time today.
606 gossip: For disappointed Spurs fans, here's a special announcement for you. SpursRoyal says the signings of Giles Barnes and Bolo Zenden will be announced before tonight's game against Arsenal, Whitehatlock says Harry Kewell will join on loan, Ryan is sure Kieron Richardson will join from Manchester United for £5.3m, hassanmizra has seen David Beckham at the Lane with Daniel Levy and MitchellHirschovitz says Nigel Reo-Coker has passed a medical but will only join if West Ham get a midfielder to replace him.
1630: ...for not much as it happens.
1628: For those of you who have been in for the long haul we were assured Tottenham would be announcing the signing of former Bayer Leverkusen player Ze Roberto at 1630 GMT so prepare yourselves...
606 gossip: A Newcastle special. Ajax's Ryan Babel is definitely on Tyneside along with Shaun Wright-Phillips, according to ButtsButt. If the Magpies land Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips former Chelsea winger Damien Duff will be going to Everton, according to ParkLane11. This is cracking stuff, but do not get too over-excited. Warriorfiggy7 says Dutch sources are saying Glenn Roeder has failed to persuade Babel to join.
1615: Mark Hughes is on the move. Relax Rovers fans, not that one. Everton's young defender has gone to Northampton for an undisclosed fee.
606 gossip: Owen Hargreaves has been spotted getting out of a private jet at Manchester airport by gss1972 and some 'Italian blokes' have been seen going into Old Trafford by Parkes69. Fernando Torres is being given a guided car tour of north London - the Highbury and Islington part and Alan Smith has just got out of his car at Villa Park - guessing that's the Manchester United striker and not the former Arsenal one - according to Gabboknows.
1558: Big transfer news and we are not talking about a player but a club. Dubai International Capital has pulled out of a propsed takeover bid for Liverpool. Maybe that will stop those Morten Gamst Pedersen rumours dead in their tracks quicker than a hatchet man's tackle on the flying Norwegian.
606 gossip: Paper talk had Aston Villa's JLloyd Samuel heading for Celtic, but eddylloyd thinks he knows better. He has seen a Bentley with the number plate JL S4M outside Sheffield's Meadowhall shopping centre - brilliantly dubbed the Land of Shopportunity on their website. Maybe he was stopping off on his way north for some fruit pastilles, although with lloyd in his name perhaps eddy is working on the inside here.
1652: Norwich midfielder Carl Robinson might 'do a Beckham' and chance his arm over in Major League Soccer. Not sure the signing on fee at the Toronto FC wil be as big as it was for Becks minds.
1542: Tottenham midfielder Reto Ziegler has agreed to join Italian Serie A side Sampdoria on loan until the end of the season.
1528: A bit more on the Bayern Munich front where Ottmar Hitzfeld has been named as Felix Magath's replacement as manager.
606 gossip: There was a bit of Morten Gamst Pedersen to Liverpool chat earlier in the day and it is refusing to go away. Instead of Harry Kewell going to Blackburn, Riise 'n' Shine says Rovers will get Bolo Zenden and £8m. That sounds a whole lot better than the injury-prone Australian.
1519: It is like a dance class on here. Quick, quick, slow and we are in a slow patch at the moment when it comes to actual deals. When it comes to rumour, gossip and the sort of stuff that gives every football fan hope you guys are going full blast on 606.
606 gossip: Celtic coach Tommy Burns has just been spotted leaving the Hearts Academy with Paul Hartley by albertkidd4ever_ever. And more Scottish chat from Aberdeen where ArchieMacDougal has seen Robbie Winters and Charlie Miller. The pair have been released by SK Brann. See the dots and join them up.
1507: Reported Celtic target Zdravko Kuzmanovic will not be heading to Glasgow. The highly-rated Swiss midfielder, 19, has opted to join Fiorentina instead.
606 gossip: Mr_stewart is "99% certain" he saw Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips at St James' Park with Newcastle coach Terry McDermott. It is busy on Tyneside because there is some real 606 heat building up behind Ajax's Ryan Babel joining the Magpies. The Dutch forward has been spotted with Glenn Roeder by T_Toon.
1451: BIRMINGHAM buy/ARSENAL sell
Arsenal get £1m in the bank as Sebastian Larsson, 21, turns his loan deal at Birmingham into a permanent move on a four-year contract. That is the day's first confirmed seven-figure deal and things are picking up.
1444: There is a big money move bubbling up to the surface. The Press Association are quietly confident Matthew Upson will go from Birmingham to West Ham in a £7.5m deal.
1443: Rangers midfielder Thomas Buffel's potential move to Hannover has fallen through.
1434: MANCHESTER CITY buy/PSV EINDHOVEN sell
Former England left-back Michael Ball is on his way to City after impressing boss Stuart Pearce during a trial. The 27-year-old has signed a six-month contract for an undisclosed fee.
1419: It has all gone a bit quite after that flurry of Williams and Magath excitement but news in from Cardiff who have signed Charlton reserve-team midfielder Simon Walton on loan until the end of the season.
606 gossip: 1osrwn is even giving a time for when this rumour will be announced. Confidence or what? Spurs sporting director Damien Commoli has just returned from Brazil and will announce the signing of Brazilian winger Ze Roberto at 1630 GMT.
1404: Celtic are reportedly set to sign Hearts midfielder Paul Hartley in a £1m deal just 24 hours after their Old Firm rivals Rangers had two deals for the Scottish international rejected.
606 gossip: Ghana midfielder Stephen Appiah has been spotted shopping near Old Trafford by fernand0torres and that speculation is backed up by sharathciddu. Eddpitt says Spurs have thrown their hat into the ring named Javier Mascherano.
1340: It is not a transfer, but is it linked with one? Bild newspaper is reporting that Bayern Munich have sacked coach Felix Magath. Will it result in a renewed attempt from Manchester United to sign the Bundelsliga club's England international midfielder Owen Hargreaves ahead of tonight's midnight deadline?
1337: WATFORD buy/LEICESTER sell
The moment we have all been waiting for. A Premiership signing and it is Watford who have flinched first, signing cultured midfielder Gareth Williams from Leicester for an undisclosed fee. He has struggled with injuries at the Foxes but should create chances for his strikers. Any sweepstake winners out there?
1328: News involving a Premiership club. BBC Radio Cumbria report young Bolton striker Johan Smith has joined Carlisle. OK, so it is not the big-name, top-flight club signing we are craving, but the crescendo to that moment is only increasing.
606 gossip: Swiss international Tranquillo Barnetta - AKA Silent Hair - is in talks with Tottenham according to the same fella who "broke" the story that Babel was on at the Tyneside Cinema. Tomahawk17 insists Zinedine Zidane - AKA Zizou - is coming out of retirement to play for Arsenal and The Planner is adamant Javier Mascherano - AKA El Jefe (The Chief) - is holding out for a move to Manchester United
1310: Elsewhere in the Championship, Norwich's Craig Fleming has joined Rotherham on a free, Crystal Palace's Marco Reich has returned to Germany with Kickers Offenbach for nothing, Peter Sweeney has left Stoke for Yeovil on loan and Birmingham have signed winger Pat Kavanagh.
1303: If there is to be a rush of transfers Gareth Bale will not be on the list. BBC Radio Solent reports the 17-year-old will be staying at Southampton for the rest of the season.
1259: Back a bit early as it has been pointed out that 25% of us eat at our desks, so excuse the crumbs and on with the transfers. What do you mean? There haven't been any? When will the mad scramble begin? Will there be a mad scramble?
1236: And we spend just 27 minutes on average over eating our lunch, so we'll suspend play until 1303.
1230: It is coming up to that part of the day when you are going to have to consider peeling yourself away from all this transfer excitement to get some food. Did you know the average Briton spends £1.50 on their lunch? Didn't think so.
1219: Marlon Harewood's representative Phil Sproson says it is very unlikely the West Ham striker will be signing on the dotted line for another club in the next 11 hours and 41 minutes.
1213: By way of an aside, former Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman used to ply rival chairmen with alcohol when he wanted to lower the prospective price of a player. When he signed Bolton's David Jack in 1928 he ensured their representatives had G&Ts while he told the waiter: "My gin and tonic shall contain no gin".
606 gossip: This stuff is gold. JoshdaJambo has seen Arsenal representatives "looking happy" as they leave Tynecastle. Have they tied up a deal for Hearts keeper Craig Gordon or have they been knocking back some of Vladimir Romanov's vodka?
1200: Is this why they call it deadline day? Halfway through and you'd get more out a church mouse. Come on chairmen. Get the cheque books out. Glenn Frey to D:Ream's 'Things Can Only Get Better' in little under half-an-hour.
606 gossip: More players have been spotted at rival training grounds. Morten Gamst Pedersen is at Liverpool's Melwood complex. Harry Kewell will be going the other way according to PoolRoss. And Babel is at Newcastle. Assuming that's the Amsterdam forward Ryan and not something to do with Brad Pitt's film being on at the Tyneside Cinema.
1133: BBC Scotland understands Shaun Maloney is close to completing a move from Celtic to Aston Villa. The sweepstake race is hotting up for anyone who has Maloney or Michael Duberry. I can feel a rendition of 'The Heat Is On' coming on... altogether now, 'caught up in the action, I've been looking out for you.'
1122: As well as being rubbished on 606, BBC Sport's Mark Lawrenson has dismissed talk of David Nugent leaving North End. He spoke with the chairman just the other day and has assured us there will be no movement at Deepdale. No spotter's badge for obe85 then.
606 gossip: The old deadline day chestnut of a player being spotted at a rival's training ground has been found nestled in the undergrowth. Obe85 has seen Preston's David Nugent at Everton while CL has had a tip off that West Ham's Teddy Sheringham is at Fulham's training base.
1113: Young Blackburn left-back Andy Taylor has joined Huddersfield on loan. Still no major singing but the first action involving a Premiership club. Is that the promise we need that something bigger and better is around the corner? Like parched, befuddled men in a desert we will continue to search for our oasis that is a big-name signing.
606 gossip: Crawley125 has come in with the sort of chain of events we love around here. Jason Koumas is swapping his Wests from Brom to Ham to replace Hayden Mullins who is moving to Charlton in a swap deal for Hermann Hreidarsson.
1046: Feel the heat! Well, kind of. Stoke skipper Michael Duberry is in talks with Reading.
1041: Last day movers and shakers this time a year ago included Rob Earnshaw (WBA-Norwich), David Bentley (Arsenal-Blackburn), Michael Brown (Spurs-Fulham) and DJ Campbell (Brentford-Birmingham). Not a 'hot' quartet to set the pulse racing, although any sort of pulse would do at the minute.
1033: But West Ham manager Alan Curbishley expects things to build as "everybody is scratching around doing things because for some reason business hots up".
1028: Bolton boss Sam Allardyce reasoned earlier in the week that he expected prices to go down the closer clubs got to deadline day.
1019: In total, Premiership clubs spent £70m 12 months ago, £20m more than in each of the previous two years and double the figure from three seasons before. The money men are going to have to start digging in their pockets today if that trend is going to continue.
1016: For the teams at the bottom the template for success is Portsmouth. They spent more than £13m last January, subsequently climbed out of the relegation zone and a flying high this term.
606 gossip: RedFoz reckons Manchester United are set to hijack Liverpool's expected deal for Javier Mascherano, while boxy42 says Everton and Newcastle have joined Lens in the race for St Etienne's highly-rated striker Frederique Piquionne.
0955: A Championship signing. Leeds have landed a goalkeeper. He's Danish. He's 27. He has joined on loan from Brondby until the end of the season. His name is Casper Ankergren.
0946: How's that sweepstake going?
0933: James Constable is the first permanent deal of the day, going from Walsall to Kidderminster for an undisclosed fee after spending two months on loan at Harriers, during which he has scored nine goals. Bet he wasn't in your sweepstake plans.
0925: To fill the time up why not set up a sweepstake at work or with your office pals for the first player to sign a deal. Here are a possible list of runners and riders, so to speak: Gareth Bale, Collins John, Craig Gordon, Paul Hartley, Marlon Harewood, Stephen Caldwell, Shaun Maloney, Matthew Upson, Mido, Owen Hargreaves, Javier Mascherano, Teddy Sheringham... the list is potentially endless.
0917: So many names and so little action - with all respect to Mr Eaden. That is how it often is in the first half of deadline day.
0913: One move definitely happening is Nicky Eaden from Nottingham Forest to Lincoln for the rest of the season on loan. Not a thriller admittedly since he has been on loan at the Imps for much of the season already.
0911: One move definitely not happening is Darren Bent to West Ham. Charlton have categorically denied anything is in the pipeline while Alan Curbishley has rubbished talk of a £17m deal describing the speculation surrounding West Ham as "quite outrageous".
0903: While at the other end of the age range is the Teddy Sheringham speculation. Spurs boss Martin Jol has told his chairman Daniel Levy he wants "power and pace" according to the Mail. Do you think something may have been lost in translation?
0901: One potential star set for a move to White Hart Lane is Derby's Giles Barnes.
0856: The Gareth Bale transfer saga looks set to end with the 17-year-old staying at Southampton so there will be no "Gareth Bale's out" headlines on Thursday morning. The player wants to go to Manchester United, but Spurs are bound to test the resolve of the Championship club at some stage today.
0850: In short, Tottenham and West Ham could be busy today.
