Carrick move pleases fans

Carrick will be seeing a lot more of Rooney this season
Michael Carrick's 18.6m transfer from Tottenham to Manchester United has sparked much debate on the BBC's 606 message boards as to who has got the best deal.

The vast majority of Spurs fans are understandably delighted to receive such a huge sum after the club forked out only 2.75m for the England midfielder from West Ham two years ago.

United supporters, meanwhile, are generally happy with securing the services of the 25-year-old and do not seem concerned with the huge price tag.

The deal for Carrick was announced last week but the fee was not made public.

This is a brilliant piece of business - I'm sad to lose him but for that much we should be laughing!

An utter steal for Spurs. He's not worth even 12m. Brilliant from Jol and Levy.

We have lost a class player but most Spurs fans are happy and believe that it will have little bearing on our season overall. A lot depends on Zokora but I am confident of improving on last season - the money will help bring in two more quality players to strengthen what is already an impressive squad which should be troubling the top four once again.

My problem with Carrick is he very rarely, if ever, dominated a game - I do think he has quality, but not 18.6m of quality.

I wish Carrick well, he is a great player and done well for us, but I sure ain't complaining he has gone at this price!

I don't care how much we got for him, he dictated our play last year and I feel will be greatly missed.

Il Capitano
Carrick is good not great, but this is a further sign of how well run our club is nowadays - when was the last time we even made a small profit on a player never mind a 15m one in 2 years?

Spurs did not want to sell Carrick and so stuck an inflated purchase price on him (I believe him to be a 10m player at best). Man Utd decided that they wanted the player badly enough to meet the asking price - the law of supply and demand strikes again.

Des Walkers own goal
Big loss for Spurs, but one we can cope with - we have plenty of very good cover in midfield.

Carrick is not worth 80% more than someone who scored 150 goals in 218 appearances for Manchester United. He's maybe worth half that. Still, if he gets 20+ goals for us this season I will shut up and eat humble pie!

Red Odsell
Carrick will excel at Man Utd. I will be interested to see him and Scholes together in the middle. Retention of the ball is king and Carrick will help us with that.

Carrick will be a good signing and if he creates goals and wins matches, everyone will forget his price

Yes Carrick is overpriced but he is one of the best passers of the ball in the Premiership

We all follow United

I like Carrick but the price is far too high.

Brilliant buy - quite expensive but we are Manchester United and we can afford it. Carrick's distribution is excellent and he plays the holding role very well.

Carrick has the potential to turn into a great player at United. I think 18.6m is too much but shows how highly he was thought of at Spurs.

I would prefer us to get ripped off for a player than spend nowt - he will improve the side and that is all I care about.

Though I wish we had splashed out to get Gattuso, I'm quite happy with Carrick as long as he keeps on developing. Maschereno looks great too, but I cant see him coming to United now that we paid that much for Carrick.

I would have paid 12m maximum - I know his passing will be useful but I'm expecting streams of gold dust to come from his heels when he runs now.

Where Angels Play
It appears to be a total rip off but then again I thought we paid over the odds for Rooney and have been happy to be proved wrong.

I can't believe we've paid almost 50m for TWO players (Rio and Carrick). We could have bought that whole West Ham team for half that price a few years ago!!

I have to agree with the Spurs fans over the selling of Carrick - unfortunately, Man United's desperation means they paid over the odds for a promising, but not yet world class, midfielder.

Makes Darren Bent positively cheap at 2.5m last season! Shockingly expensive for a good but not exceptional player.

How can Carrick be worth 18m when he is not a patch on Gattuso, Pirlo or Cannavaro?

Sir Alex Ferguson recently had a go at Chelsea for paying 30m for Shevchenko, basically saying that if he paid 1m for Cantona, then is Shevchenko really 30 times better? Well Fergie why don't you explain how Carrick is 18 times better than Eric if that's your way of thinking?

Carrick is a very good player and a good passer of the ball but he, at the age of 25, is not worth 18m in comparison to what Sir Alex Ferguson could have bought for that same money.

My Blue Heaven
Who cares what he cost? It's not your money and you have to judge a manager and board to do what they think is right for the squad.
