When Lineker met Maradona
WHEN LINEKER MET MARADONA

When Lineker met Maradona
Tues 2 May, 2235 BST on BBC1

Gary Lineker travels to Buenos Aires to spend the weekend with Diego Maradona.

Maradona is regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time, almost single-handedly leading Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986.

But his career was marred by drugs and controversy, including the infamous 'Hand of God' that led to England's exit from the 1986 World Cup.

As Gary spends time with the Argentine genius, he gets an exclusive glimpse into the goldfish bowl of Maradona's life.

Throughout this fascinating documentary Maradona talks frankly about his drug addictions and his subsequent recovery.

He reveals that his drug taking began when he played for Spanish giants Barcelona.

His addictions became known to the wider public when he was thrown out of football for failing a drugs test at the 1994 World Cup.

The many sides of Maradona's character are also in evidence in this fascinating portrait of the world's most celebrated footballer.

We see Maradona the family man, with footage of him with his two daughters as babies and today at the dinner table.

We see Maradona the celebrity, including clips of his ratings-topping Argentinean TV show La Noche del 10 (The Night of 10) with celebrities like Robbie Williams and Mike Tyson.

We see Maradona the politician as he heralds his friend Fidel Castro.

Finally, we see Maradona as a man still very much in love with football - his biggest love next to his family is his home town club of Boca Juniors

Maradona is an honorary president of the club and attends every game as a supporter.

He still receives the adulation of the home support who chant, "Brazilians, Brazilians, why do you look so worried? Because Maradona is better than Pele, of course!"

What comes across strongly from When Lineker met Maradona is that Maradona appears to be a man who has faced his demons and now not only has beaten them but is enjoying life to the full.
