Everton new boy Simon Davies has urged boss David Moyes to complete a £6m deal for Wales team-mate Craig Bellamy.
Moyes is pondering a move for the 25-year-old Newcastle outcast after holding talks with Bellamy.
Davies, a £4m buy from Spurs, said: "Craig is the calibre of player Everton are trying to bring in. He would be a great addition to the squad.
"He's a good lad to have and wants to win so much. Sometimes he needs to curb that because it overspills."
Davies added: "But that's a good quality to have. He'd be a great player to have."
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd confirmed he has given Everton and Celtic permission to talk to Bellamy.
But Shepherd said: "Right now everything is up in the air and there is a long way to go. There hasn't been a firm bid and we haven't agreed a fee with anyone.
"I understand that won't be a problem for either club, so in the end it will be down to Bellamy himself."
BBC Sport understands Bellamy met Moyes on Sunday.
The striker spent the last half of last season on loan at Celtic after a row with Magpies boss Graeme Souness.
Newcastle, who began pre-season training on Monday as they prepare for the Intertoto Cup, have given Bellamy an extra seven days holiday.
"Craig Bellamy is not due to return to training until next week along with those players who took part in international matches after the end of last season," said a club spokesman. "He will return with the rest of the players next week."
However, Moyes remained coy about whether Bellamy would be arriving at Goodison Park.
"I don't talk about players at other clubs," he said. "It is not my way.
"We are hoping to land one or two more before the season starts though, that is for sure, and ideally we would like to get them in quickly."
With Bellamy's exit looking ever more certain, Souness could start the season with only Shearer and youngster Michael Chopra as his strike force.
Shola Ameobi is still at the club but will miss the start of the campaign through injury.
Newcastle's first competitive game is the first leg of their Intertoto Cup third round tie against either Ankaraspor or Dubnica on the weekend of 16/17 July.
The Magpies, however, insisted there had been no change of plan. Bellamy also fell out with Newcastle captain Alan Shearer after allegedly sending him abusive text messages and is unlikely to return to the club.
