Alan Hansen's column

By Alan Hansen
BBC Sport football expert

What a fantastic game, I thought England had just won the World Cup.

It was an amazing performance from Sven-Goran Eriksson's men - they showed grit, determination and real quality against Argentina.

We always knew this England team had real quality, but against the South Americans they showed it. It was a joy to watch.

Looking back at the game, I think Wayne Bridge will get a little bit of criticism for the first goal, but Maxi Rodrigruez did well to get the ball into the box and it was an easy finish for Hernan Crespo.

But that was only one of the few negatives.

Wayne Rooney had another great game. Apart from his equaliser, there was one fantastic moment when he jinked past three Argentine tackles before dinking the ball almost past the reach of keeper Roberto Abbondanzieri.

That moment came in the second half, which I can't believe was better than the first. And what a fantastic climax.

Michael Owen had hardly been in the game, but you should never take your eyes off him. He took advantage of a great ball from stand-in full-back Steven Gerrard for the second equaliser.

Then he bizarrely beat Peter Crouch to a header after another great ball from Joe Cole.

The fact of the matter is, the whole team played absolutely brilliantly.
