Alan Shearer has denied reports he had threatened to quit Newcastle after being told he was not assured a first-team place this season.
The former England striker was quoted as saying he was considering his position at the club following talks with manager Sir Bobby Robson.
But Shearer told the club's official website: "I did not say I would quit.
"What I did say was that I wanted to play regular football in my final season at the club."
Southampton striker James Beattie and Barcelona forward Patrick Kluivert have been linked with a move to Newcastle.
But Shearer insisted the new signings have made him determined than ever to prove himself.
He said: "There are reports that Newcastle are going to sign some players and, with the excellent players we already have, I know full well that we can only play two up front.
"I'd never take my place in the team for granted but, form permitting, then obviously I'd like to be a regular."
Shearer, who is on tour with the club in Thailand, plans to retire from playing after the end of next season.
The Gosforth-born player was signed by Kevin Keegan for a British transfer record of £15m in 1996.
