England assistant coach Brian Kidd has undergone surgery for prostate cancer.

The former Blackburn boss is battling to recover in time to travel to Euro 2004 as part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's backroom staff.

A Football Association spokesman said: "We are aware that Brian has undergone a serious operation and we look forward to him making a speedy recovery."

Kidd was appointed to the role in 2001 after forging his reputation as assistant coach at Manchester United.
