Newcastle have completed the signing of Stephen Carr from Tottenham in a deal thought to be worth £2m.
The 27-year-old right-back, capped 30 times by the Republic of Ireland, has agreed a four-year contract.
Carr spent 11 years at White Hart Lane after joining as a trainee and captained the London club last season.
The Irish defender will join James Milner, Patrick Kluivert and Nicky Butt as new additions to Newcastle's squad ahead of the new Premiership season.
Carr arrives at Newcastle as the club battles to contain an outbreak of conjunctivitis.
The Premier League are closely monitoring the health scare which could result
in the postponement of Newcastle's first game of the season against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
So far five players - Shay Given, Lee Bowyer, Andy O'Brien, Tony Caig and Laurent
Robert - have been sidelined.
