Wycombe 1-0 Cambridge

Guy Branston scored Wycombe's winner as they beat a battling Cambridge in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Branston's first-half goal was enough for the Chairboys to record their first win in 15 games and their maiden victory under caretaker manager John Gorman.

In a scrappy first half early chances were shared as Wycombe's Keith Ryan prodded over from close range and 38-year-old Cambridge player-boss John Taylor shot over when presented with a clear opportunity.

But it was Wycombe who won the tie in the 20th minute when Branston connected with Roger Johnson's knock-back to head home.

Cambridge should have equalised at the start of the second half only for Shane Tudor to shoot wide after picking up a loose back-pass and rounding Wycombe keeper Frank Talia.

Taylor continued to cause problems as the U's pressed hard and Talia was forced to save at his near post from Adam Tann.

Wycombe created further chances for Michael Simpson and Steve Brown, but in the end a single goal was enough.

Wycombe: Talia, Johnson, Thomson, Branston, Senda, Currie, Bulman, Simpson, Vinnicombe, Bell, Ryan.
Subs: Dixon, Cook, Williams, Mapes, Brown.

Cambridge Utd: Marshall, Tann, Angus, Duncan, Murray, Guttridge, Walker, Bridges, Opara, Taylor, Tudor.
Subs: Turner, Brennan, Nacca, Fleming, Bimson.
