Everton end Davis chase
Fulham midfielder Sean Davis
Everton have pulled out of a move for Fulham midfielder Sean Davis because of problems with his medical.

The two clubs had agreed a fee of about 5.5m for the former England Under-21 midfielder and held talks over personal terms.

But it became clear that the knee ligament injury the 23-year-old picked up in a pre-season friendly would mean he would not pass a medical before the close of the transfer window.

Everton had hoped the problem would have settled in time to beat the 31 August deadline, but following a second scan on Monday it has emerged that Davis will need more time to recover.

Manager David Moyes told the club's official website: "After close inspection it is apparent that Sean Davis is presently unable to complete a medical prior to the close of the transfer window.

"With that in mind, we are not able to complete the transfer at present."

The club may now step up their bid to sign Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson or Real Madrid's Steve McManaman.

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren also had a bid accepted for Davis, who indicated he wanted to leave Fulham.

But Boro appeared to have missed out to Everton for his signature.

Fulham reluctantly accepted the player's transfer request, but insisted they will not allow him to leave until they have sorted out a replacement.

The Cottagers announced they were close to completing a move for Sunderland midfielder Claudio Reyna last week, but the former Rangers star has still to sign.
