Community Shield player ratings
Marks out of 10 for the Manchester United and Arsenal players following the Community Shield.

Manchester United

Tim Howard: Slow to get across for Thierry Henry's free-kick and looked nervy on a number of occasions. Redeemed himself with Wiltord save in stoppage-time and with a couple of stops in the penalty shoot-out.

Phil Neville: Foolishly booked in the opening 30 seconds for his rash tackle on Patrick Vieira. Rarely troubled defensively, but provided little attacking threat.

Mikael Silvestre: Displayed great pace and some impressive distribution as well as popping up to score the first goal. Always dangerous from set-pieces

Rio Ferdinand: Formed a useful partnership with Silvestre and kept Henry in check while he was on the pitch.

Quinton Fortune: Showed great pace going forward, though unable to provide any accurate crosses.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Had a great shot saved by Lehmann, but struggled to deliver any meaningful crosses.

Nicky Butt: Solid, if unspectacular and his partnership with Keane in the centre of midfield suggests United will be heavily dependent on Scholes to open up teams this season.

Roy Keane: Sprinting back to win the ball from Vieira and then Pires suggested there is plenty of life in the veteran midfielder.

Ryan Giggs: Hit the post with a header and several times carved open the Arsenal defence with his pace and skill.

Paul Scholes: Vision stood out as did the passing in his efforts to release Van Nistelrooy and Solskjaer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy: Hit the bar with a header but generally reined in by Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure.

Substitutes

Eric Djemba-Djemba (replaced Nicky Butt): Bustled his way to the Arsenal goal, only to shoot narrowly over. Lucky not to be dismissed after leaving foot dangerously high on Campbell.

John O'Shea (replaced Quinton Fortune): Rarely tested defensively, though offered little going forward.

Diego Forlan (replaced Phil Neville): Not on long enough to really have a chance of getting into the game.

Arsenal

Jens Lehmann Made the save of the game to deny Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and his greater experience provided an interesting contrast to Tim Howard.

Lauren: Steady defensively, though contributed little going forward.

Sol Campbell: After missing the FA Cup final through suspension, he was back at the heart of the Arsenal defence to give a typically solid display, though rashly lashed out at Eric Djemba-Djemba.

Kolo Toure: Showed his versatility in the absence of Martin Keown and gives manager Arsene Wenger a useful option in central defence. Made a superb tackle to thwart Fortune.

Ashley Cole: Booked in the second minute for a foul on Nicky Butt and fortunate to stay on the pitch after aiming a kick at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ray Parlour: Gave a typically busy performance, but replaced at half-time by Pires.

Patrick Vieira: Back to his best after a summer knee operation, breaking up United's attacks and getting Arsenal moving forward.

Gilberto Silva: Had a quiet game in the attacking sense and replaced by compatriot Edu.

Freddie Ljungberg: Plenty of huff and puff from the Swede, but not much invention.

Dennis Bergkamp: Anonymous first half, dropping back into midfield, leaving Henry isolated in attack.

Thierry Henry: Struck the ball delightfully to level the scores at 1-1, but after his summer exertions with France withdrawn at the interval.

Substitutes

Sylvain Wiltord (replaced Henry): Showed plenty of willing, notably when he raced clear in stoppage time, only to be denied by Howard rushing off his line

Robert Pires (replaced Ray Parlour): Broke clear soon after coming on only to fluff his attempted lob of Howard. Looked a little short of match fitness.

Francis Jeffers(replaced Dennis Bergkamp): Foolishly got himself sent off for kicking Phil Neville and being tackled by the United defender.

Edu (replaced Gilberto Silva): Showed his passing ability, but rarely in the attacking third as the game became bogged down in midfield.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst (replaced Freddie Ljungberg): Hit one tame shot, but struggled to get into the match in the stifling heat.
