Blackburn Rovers want Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers - but have been scared off by a £5m price tag.
Rovers boss Graeme Souness is unhappy with current first-choice strike force of former Manchester United pair Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.
And he has admitted making a move for Jeffers, who was the target of a failed bid from Birmingham City.
Jeffers' first choice would be a return to former club Everton, after he revealed recently he wants to return to the club he left two seasons ago in a £10m deal.
But Blackburn may offer his best hope of a return north, with Souness saying: "We've have made an enquiry for Jeffers, but were frightened off by the asking price."
He may yet revive his interest if Cole and Yorke fail to respond to Souness's criticisms of their pre-season performances.
Souness has money to spend after raking in £22.5m from the sales of Damien Duff to Chelsea and David Dunn to Birmingham City.
