Birmingham City have told Arsenal misfit Francis Jeffers he must take a pay cut if he wants to re-ignite his career at St Andrews.

Boss Steve Bruce wants to add Jeffers to summer signings David Dunn and Luciano Figueroa.

Jeffers is available for about £4m - but the stumbling block could be his reported wages of £35,000-a-week.

And Birmingham may face a new obstacle with Jeffers' former club Everton linked with the striker they sold to Arsenal for £10m two season ago.

Everton boss David Moyes admits he wants a new striker after Wayne Rooney was ruled out for four weeks with ankle damage.

And Jeffers went public recently on his desire to return to Goodison Park and the club he supported as a boy.

Birmingham chairman David Gold said: "It won't happen unless Jeffers takes a cut in his wages.

"If he wants to sit at Arsenal on his big contract and play golf every day, rather than get on with his career, then he can continue with that.

"Jeffers has got at most 10 years left - and losing something like 150 grand a year is not something I would see as a good career move to be honest.

"But if the alternative is sitting on your backside doing nothing, where is the motivation in that?"
