Manchester United duo Sir Alex Ferguson and Ruud van Nistelrooy have won the Barclaycard manager and player of the month awards for April.

United moved within sight of the regaining the Premiership title in April.

The Old Trafford club defeated Liverpool, Newcastle, Blackburn and Tottenham, and drew at fellow title contenders Arsenal.

Van Nistelrooy has now won the award for the third time, while Ferguson has won the managers' prize a record 14 times.

"The two award recipients exemplify United's dogged determination and never-say-die spirit," said Barclaycard spokesman Nic Gault.

He added: "Sir Alex Ferguson has been the driving force behind their great run off the field while Ruud has been, without doubt, the driving force on the pitch with six goals in the month."
