Blues seal double deal
Jamie Clapham
Clapham has agreed a long-term contract
Birmingham have completed the signings of Jamie Clapham from Ipswich and Spurs' Stephen Clemence.

Clapham, a 27-year-old left wing back, cost the Blues 1.3m while 24-year-old Clemence arrived at St Andrew's in a 900,000 deal.

The Clapham deal appeared to have hit a hitch over the player's personal terms, but the problem was resolved and he joins Clemence on a three-year contract.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has said he hopes to complete the signing of "one other defender from a Premiership club" in time for Sunday's game against Arsenal.

Clapham's agent Andrew Mills said the delay in sealing the deal was for the player to consider the move.

"For Jamie personally, he is enjoying some of the best football of his career so far," said Mills.

"As much as it is an opportunity to move to the Premier League he had to make sure it was correct."

Clapham, who plays on the left side of defence or midfield, joined Ipswich in January 1998 from Spurs and has started every one of their 36 league and cup matches this season.

  • The new signings came as the club announced pre-tax losses for the year ended 31 August 2002 of 6.4m, up from 2.6m the previous year.
