Ronaldo has capped a remarkable year by being named Fifa World Player of the Year.

The Brazil striker becomes the first ever player to land the prize for a third time, beating off competition from Oliver Kahn and Zinedine Zidane.

Ronaldo was crowned European Footballer of the Year on Monday and won the World Soccer magazine award last week.

The Brazilian spearheaded his team's World Cup winning campaign, scoring eight goals and winning the Golden Boot.

The World Cup marked a personal triumph for the 26-year-old, who spent almost four years in the football wilderness with a career-threatening knee injury.

Ronaldo won with a total of 357 points, Kahn came second with 171 and Zidane finished third with 148.

American midfielder Mia Hamm won the Women's World Player of the Year award.

Hamm, 30, retains the award she won in its inaugural year last year.
