Wigan 0-1 Doncaster

Conference side Doncaster turned the tables on Division Two leaders Wigan by beating them at the JJB Stadium in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Wigan knocked Manchester City out of the Worthington Cup recently but were on the wrond end of a giant-killing on this occasion.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell fielded a strong side in a bid to extend their 16-game unbeaten run, but the home side had no answer to Doncaster's determination and aggression.#

They created a number of first-half openings, and it needed a fine save from veteran goalkeeper Dave Beasant - making his Wigan debut - to deny Paul Barnes just before the break.

But the goal that settled the tie came after 67 minutes.

Centre-back Matt Jackson brought down his namesake Justin, and when Gareth Owen sent over an inch-perfect free-kick, defender Mark Albrighton turned the ball home.

The closest Wigan came to getting on the scoresheet was when a shot from record signing Nathan Ellington came back off the crossbar.
