Gazzayev to coach Russia
Russia had a dismal World Cup campaign
Russia had a dismal World Cup campaign
CSKA Moscow coach Valery Gazzayev has been named as the new coach of the Russian national side.

Gazzayev, who replaces Oleg Romantsev, immediately pledged to change the management style following Russia's disappointing World Cup showing.

"This is a new chapter in the national team," he said after his unanimous appointment by the Russian Football Union.

There are only about 10 top coaches in the whole world who are worthy to be considered for this job
Russian Football Union president Vyacheslav Koloskov

"My first steps as head coach will be to make the national team open to the media and to the public.

"I am for complete openness and democracy."

Gazzayev, 47, was Russia's under-21 coach last year before joining CSKA and leading them to the Russian Cup in May.

He will stay on as CSKA coach until the end of the year.

Russia failed to progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup finals, prompting Romantsev's resignation.

They beat Tunisia in their opening game but were eliminated after losing to Japan and Belgium.

Their exit prompted fierce criticism from the Russian media, who labelled Romantsev's team "from the Jurassic age" and his tactics "outdated".

RFU president Vyacheslav Koloskov said Gazzayev had been the only candidate to be presented to the union's 24-member executive board.

"Initially, we had in mind six foreign coaches and three Russians," he added.

"I spoke directly myself with some candidates while I had enough information on the others to make the right choice.

"I came to the conclusion that Gazzayev would be the only candidate to be discussed at today's board meeting."

Two top Russian oil executives had offered to pay up to $1m a year to hire a foreign coach after the World Cup.

And an opinion poll showed an overwhelming majority of Russians favoured hiring someone from abroad.

But Koloskov said: "There are only about 10 top coaches in the whole world who are worthy to be considered for this job.

"But all of them are already working for their respective clubs.

"The rest of them are simply marginal coaches and can't be considered seriously."
