Owls want Wilson
Scott Wilson (left) in rare action for Rangers
Scott Wilson (left) has Champions League experience
Scott Wilson could be poised to join Sheffield Wednesday after being released by Rangers and turning down Portsmouth.

The 25-year-old is determined to move south after a frustrating time as a bit player at Ibrox with the Scottish Premier League club.

He enjoyed a loan spell with Harry Redknapp's Pompey last season but rejected their offer to sign permanently.

First Division rivals Wednesday now appear to be favourites for his signature, with boss Terry Yorath telling The Sun: "Scott Wilson is a defender we have been looking at for a while.

I think it was time to go

"He is a big, strong player and he has already proved he is more than capable of holding his own in the English First Division.

"He would be a great signing for this club."

Rangers had offered new deals to young defensive prospects Maurice Ross and Robert Malcolm, plus goalkeeper Alan McGregor, but Wilson was not prepared to accept anything but regular, first-team football.

"I don't want anything in Scotland and I don't know what's going to happen," he told Rangers' website.

"I'd prefer a club down south and it's true Portsmouth made me an offer, but I rejected it."

Wilson made just 78 appearances in nine seasons at Ibrox but gained Champions League experience.

"I wasn't disappointed to leave, because I think it was time to go," he said.

"Obviously you want to try and stay at a big club like that as long as you can, but I think I'd run out of time."
