Beckham celebrates his injury time goal against Greece
BBC Sport Online takes a look at the ups and downs in David Beckham's career.
1991: HIGH - Manchester United take Beckham on as a trainee. 1992: HIGH - He is part of the United team which wins the FA Youth Cup. 1993: HIGH - Signs professional contract at Old Trafford. 1996: HIGH - Makes his England debut in the 3-0 World Cup qualifier win in Moldova.
1998: HIGH - Picked for Glenn Hoddle's World Cup squad for France 98. 1998: LOW - Left out of starting line-up for first two group games in the World Cup, Tunisia and Romania, after Hoddle says Beckham is "unfocused". 1998: LOW - Beckham is sent off in second-round match of World Cup against Argentina for retaliatory kick on Diego Simeone. England go out on penalties. Beckham is regarded as public enemy number one in England with angry fans burning an effigy of him. 1999: HIGH - Helps United complete the treble - the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions Cup after the Manchester outfit stage a remarkable late recovery to beat Bayern Munich 2-1. 2000: HIGH - Beckham collects his fourth championship winner's medal as United win the Premier League by a record 18 points. 2000: LOW - Beckham is criticised for aiming gestures to abusive fans after England lose to Portugal in opening game of Euro 2000. England bow out of the tournament in the group stage. 2000: HIGH - England caretaker boss Peter Taylor makes Beckham captain for friendly against Italy.
2001: HIGH - Manchester United win another Premiership title. 2001: HIGH - Scores sensational injury-time winner in 2-2 draw against Greece which ensures England's World Cup qualification. 2001: HIGH - Beckham voted BBC Sport Personality of the Year. 2001: HIGH - Finishes runner-up to Luis Figo in Fifa's World Footballer of the Year award. 2002: HIGH - Scores a brilliant goal as United take a 2-0 lead in Champions League quarter-final first leg against Deportivo La Coruna. 2002: LOW - In the same game he is carried off on a stretcher after a horrific tackle by Diego Tristan. It is later revealed he has suffered only bruising. 2002: LOW - Beckham breaks a bone in his foot in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final after a tackle by Deportivo's Pedro Duscher. He is expected to be out of action for eight weeks and will miss the end of the domestic season and Champions League. There are also serious fears Beckham could miss the start of the World Cup.
