Motson tribute to Wolstenholme
BBC Sport's John Motson pays tribute to legendary BBC sports commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme.
Kenneth Wolstenholme, who died at the age of 81, was a lovely man and one of the best commentators in the business. He will always be remembered for his magical last line of commentary at the end of the 1966 World Cup final. But no-one should forget all the other good work he did in the commentary box. For over 20 years, he was almost the solitary commentary voice that the nation associated with football. A great admirer In my opinion, the highlight of his BBC career was the famous Matthews cup final of 1953. A few months later, he also reported on the pivotal match at Wembley when Hungary beat England 6-3. Ken had been out to see Hungary play against Sweden a few weeks earlier and was one of the first to recognise the revolution they brought to world and English football. His voice was also synonymous with five World Cups and, if you ask most of the commentators of today who they looked up to in their youth, they will almost certainly say it was him. And I remain a great admirer of his work.
