Southend 0-2 Bristol City
Bristol City coasted into the quarter-finals of the LDV Vans Trophy with victory over Southend at Roots Hall.
Robins boss Danny Wilson fielded a below-strength side but the Division Two promotion contenders still proved a cut above their Division Three rivals. Kevin Amankwaah rose highest to meet a Robin Hulbert corner and put the visitors ahead in the 52nd minute. And eight minutes from time, Lee Peacock tapped the ball in from close range after another Hulbert cross had caused panic in the Shrimpers' defence. Peacock should have added a third goal in stoppage time but home goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan saved his penalty. The nearest Rob Newman's side went to scoring was when substitute Tony Richards struck the crossbar with a 25-yard free-kick in the 78th minute.
Southend: Flahavan, Beard, Searle, Whelan, Broad, Belgrave, Johnson, Kerrigan, Hutchings, Bramble. Subs: Rawle, Gay, Thurgood, Webb, McSweeney, Richards. Bristol City: Phillips, Amankwaah, Coles, Carey, Marvin Brown, Doherty, Woodman, Hulbert, Clist, Peacock, Matthews. Subs: Attwell, Aaron Brown, Darren Jones, Goodridge, Murray. Referee: P Alcock (Halstead).
