Oldham 2-0 Tranmere
A goal in each half saw Oldham safely through to the third round of the LDV Vans Trophy with a home win over Tranmere.
John Eyre grabbed the first goal after 17 minutes, latching onto a backheel from Canada international Carlo Corazzin and firing home low from 12 yards. In first-half stoppage time, Eyre was unlucky not to score his and Oldham's second goal when his shot clipped the top of the crossbar. On-loan striker Marc Richards suffered the same fate four minutes after the interval. Dave Watson's side almost took the tie into extra time when Danny Harrison's 25-yard drive and Sean Thornton's close-range header both drew fine saves from Oldham goalkeeper Gary Kelly in the closing minutes. But Andy Ritchie's men put the game beyond Tranmere's reach when Richards headed his first goal for the club in stoppage time. Oldham: Kelly, McNiven, Balmer, Holden, Armstrong, Richards, Rickers, Darren Sheridan, Innes, Corazzin, Eyre. Subs: Miskelly, Tipton, Allott, Dudley, Boshell. Tranmere: Murphy, Hinds, Sharps, Challinor, Hazell, Parkinson, Harrison, Mellon, Hume, Allison, Hay. Subs: N'Diaye, Ralph, Henry, Thornton, Taylor. Referee: F Stretton (Nottingham) |
